1. RICHARD AREY (THOMAS1) was born 1624, and died
November 19, 1669(1,2). He married ELIZABETH CROUCH 1649(3).
She was born Abt. 1620 in England. This name was found spelled in the following
ways; Arey, Arie, Aerie, Ayre, Ary. Richard Arey b. 1624/25, was first found
in Salisbury, Massachusetts in 1646, Gloucester in 1651, and was in New
London, Connecticut in 1652. Elizabeth (Crouch) Arey was known as "Goodwife"
Arey, as had done business on her own account. She was not known after 1665.
Children of RICHARD AREY and ELIZABETH CROUCH are:
2. RICHARD AREY, b. 1640, Edgartown; d. February 14, 1688/89, Edgartown.
ii. JOHN AREY, b. Abt. 1645; d. October 12, 16754. John died unmarried.
2. RICHARD AREY (RICHARD2, THOMAS1) was born 1640 in Edgartown(5,6),
and died February 14, 1688/89 in Edgartown(7). He married SARAH MARCHANT
Abt. 1677 in Edgartown(8,9), daughter of JOHN MARCHANT* and SARAH
_____. She was born 1661 in Yarmouth, Mass.(10), and died January
1728/29 in Edgartown. School was held in the Arey household in 1687. This
according to the Martha's Vineyard Historian and C. E. Banks: The History
of Martha's Vineyard. Constable: 1678, Constable11; Juror: 1677,
Edgartown11; Juror 2: 1679, Edgartown11; Proprietor and Town
Agent: Bet. 1687 - 1689, Edgartown11; Townsman: Bet. 1679 - 1680,
Edgartown11. To ensure Sarah Marchant, is given proper credit, it
should be noted that she was the mother of two prominent, early, Martha's
Vineyard families. First the, "Arey" family which has survived
throughout the generations to current times and second the, "Harlock"
family which died out in it's fifth generation, due to the fact that Thomas
Harlock 111, had four daughters and no male heirs. PJM-M
Children of RICHARD AREY and SARAH MARCHANT are:

3. JOHN AREY (RICHARD3, RICHARD2, THOMAS1)
was born October 03, 1677 in Edgartown11, and died Bef. 1724 in Edgartown12.
He married SARAH. There are two death dates for John, October 3, 1674 and
October 3, 1677. I will leave it to the reader as to which is the correct
date. Source; Banks; The History of Martha's Vineyard; p. 18-19. It is not
known where he resided after the death of his father, but it is probable
that he was cared for by his mother's people at Yarmouth, Mass. He came
to Edgartown in 1698, and in May of 1699 he was accused of selling rum without
a licence, he pleaded that he was "a stranger and newly came to dwelling
was unaware of the laws within the said county." He removed to Salem,
Massachusetts in 1700 and was living the following year, but the date for
his death is not of record, although he was deceased before 1724. There
is no actual birth date for this, the first son of Richard and Sarah. The
Edgartown Records, state: The first son of Richard and Sarah, named John,
he died young. His birth date would probably have been within a year of
their marriage, however, there is no actual date for the marriage of Richard
and Sarah, so we can only estimate as to the year of birth for their first
son, John. Note: In the Edgartown records, state, the first son of Richard
and Sarah died young.
