Obituary: "In West Tisbury, Sept. 24th, of consumption, Rev. Bartlett Mayhew, aged 31.
"Of the character of this beloved brother it is sufficient to say that he was a good man, and a 'good minister of Christ.' His death seems premature, for it occurred almost at the close of a long and thorough course of preparation for ministerial usefulness.
"A graduate of Brown University in 1854, and of Newton Theological Institution in 1858, he had been invited to the pastorate of the 2nd Baptist Church in Exeter, N.H. After laboring with this church for a few months, he went in the early part of the present year to visit at his father's house. While there disease began to exhibit itself to an alarming degree, and he never returned to Exeter. It was difficult for him at that time to give up his hopes of accomplishing something more on earth for the salvation of his fellow-men, but when the writer visited him in the latter part of last August, he had acquired a spirit of true resignation. ...
"Mr. Mayhew leaves a large circle of friends to lament his early departure. His youthful widow, his aged parents, and his only brother, are smitten to the earth before the stroke of the Lord. ... "
