The following records were transcribed from index card extracts made from 19th-century ships' logs of New Bedford whaling vessels. The original cards, and copies of many (most?) of the original ships' logs, can be found at the New Bedford Free Public Library in New Bedford, MA.
I have only trancribed cards that explicitly mention a Vineyard location, and only for those familes listed above. This means that there are many other cards that were not trancribed that almost certainly refer to Vineyard whalers, but did not mention a Vineyard location.
There are many typos and extraction errors in the original cards. Beware!
The field I title 'Complxn/Hair' is difficult to interpret. When two adjectives are used (e.g. "light brown") this usually indicates complexion and hair color, in that order (light complexion, brown hair). When three adjectives are used (e.g. "Lt Br Bl") the convention seems to vary. (Does "bl" suggest "blond" hair or "blue" eyes?) The original logs should be examined if possible.
For more information on the ships and their adventures, there are a number of excellent books on the subject, such as History of the American Whale Fishery by Alexander Starbuck (Argosy-Antiquarian Ltd., NY, 1964.)
The last field, parentage contains data NOT transcribed from the extract cards. This information - birthdates and parents - represents our attempt to identify some of these whalers. The research you see represents the hard work of Judy Swan, with a few additional notes provided by Ed Cooper. Thank you Judy and Ed! If you can identify any of these sailors, or if you feel one of the identifications needs correction, please let me know
