2. Elizabeth West

 also went by the name of Betsey; she was born on 25 Feb 1776 at Tisbury; she married Isaac Winslow, son of James Winslow and Rhoda Chase, on 26 Apr 1795 at Tisbury, Dukes, MA; she died on 2 Mar 1800 at Tisbury, at age 24 and was buried at Company Place Cemetery, Tisbury.

Isaac Winslow was born on 16 Jun 1762 at Tisbury. He was a mariner. He married (1st) another Elizabeth West, on 26 Apr 1786. He appeared on the census of 1800 at Tisbury. He married (3rd) Deborah Lambert on 20 Nov 1800. He appeared on the censuses of 1810 - 1850 in Tisbury. He died on 19 May 1852 at Tisbury, at age 89.

3. James Shaw West

was born on 11 Dec 1777 at Tisbury; he married Charlotte Hammond on 1 Jun 1797 at Tisbury; he died on 4 Sep 1859 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury, at age 81 (of 'Palsy,' widower.); he was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

He appeared on the censuses of 1800-1850 in Tisbury. He was a pilot, and the keeper of the West Chop Light House from 1817 to 1848, where his also lived. He was also a trustee of the Holmes Hole Methodist Episcopal Church.

Charlotte Hammond was born between 1775 and 1780 in Falmouth, Barnstable Co., MA. She died on 19 Jan 1849 at Tisbury and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

9. James Shaw West Jr., born 19 Mar 1799 at Tisbury; married Eleanora Daggett.

John West was born on 31 Dec 1799 at Tisbury ; he died on 2 Mar 1801 at Tisbury, at age 1; he was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

10. Betsey West, born 25 Oct 1801 at Tisbury; married William West; married Thomas N. Hillman.

John West was born on 11 Dec 1804 at Tisbury; he married Eliza Butler, daughter of Peter Butler and Polly Luce, on 31 Dec 1843 at Tisbury; he married Mary Bradford, daughter of Cornelius Bradford and Elisabeth _____ , on 15 Apr 1871 at Tisbury; he died on 22 Aug 1886 at Vineyard Haven, Tisbury, at age 81 (of 'Old Age'). Three crew lists describe him as about 5 feet, 4 inches tall, with light complexion and brown hair. Although there were many men named 'John West' who sailed in the whalers of the area, we can definitely identify this John West (by his age and birthplace) as the one who sailed on the Ship Midas of New Bedford from 25 Jul 1820 to 6 Apr 1821, the Ship Victory of New Bedford from 8 Jul 1823 to 6 Jun 1824, and the Ship William Rotch from 17 Jul 1830 to 17 Jun 1831 between 1820 and 1831. He was listed as a 'mariner' on 16 Sep 1850 at Tisbury. On 26 Sep 1859 he sued Edward Harding, master mariner of Tisbury, for assault, claiming he 'struck him several blows on his head and shoved him into the water from a wharf upon which the plaintiff stood, to the imminent peril of his life.' He sued for $2000 in damages, and after going to trial, won $100. He was a 'mariner' on 26 Sep 1859 at Tisbury. He was a 'mariner', aged 58, on 28 Jun 1860 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury. He was a 'pilot' on 15 Apr 1871 at Tisbury.

11. Drusilla A. West, born 12 Jan 1806 at West Chop, Tisbury; married Capt. Charles Grandison Smith.

12. Capt. Leander West, born 25 Feb 1809 at Tisbury; married Love Coffin Robinson .

13. Capt. Abner West, born 29 Apr 1811 at Tisbury; married Sarah Elizabeth Hodge.

Capt. David Porter West was born on 22 Jan 1814 at West Tisbury ; he married Charlotte Jones before 1840; he married Laura Hathaway on 3 Jun 1848 at Stonington, CT; he died on 2 Feb 1886 at New Bedford, Bristol, MA, at age 72 (of paralysis); he was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury. 'David P. West, Ship Rapid' wrote a long article to the Gazette regarding the people, customs, geography, and navigation of Japan. It was published in the 12 Nov 1858 issue on page two on 4 Feb 1858 at Hakodadi.

14. Charlotte E. West, born 15 Apr 1817 at Tisbury; married Capt. Thomas Foster ; married Charles B. Hardenburg.

Lenora West was born on 4 May 1822; she died on 19 Jul 1825 at Tisbury, at age 3; she was buried after 19 Jul 1825 at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

15. Gustavus Lewis West, born 22 Jan 1826 at West Chop, Tisbury; married Deborah R. Allen.

4. Jeruel West

was born on 11 Apr 1780 at Tisbury; he married Belinda Lambert, daughter of Moses Lambert and Sarah Hayden, on 7 Dec 1803 at Chilmark, Dukes, MA; he died before 28 Aug 1830.

He appeared on the census of 1800-1820 censuses of Tisbury.

Belinda Lambert was born on 29 Dec 1779 at Chilmark, Dukes, MA. She appeared on the census of 1830 at Chilmark, listed adjacent to Margaret Lambert. She appeared on the census of 1840 in Tisbury adjacent to son-in-law James W. Hatch, near nephew Charles West. She appeared on the census of 20 Sep 1850 at Tisbury (aged 70, with John Tobey Daggett family (son-in-law). She doesn't appear in either Tisbury of Chilmark 1860 census. She died on 19 Feb 1861 at North Shore, Tisbury, at age 81 (of 'Reumatick Fever').

5. Dr. Silas West

was born on 2 Nov 1782 at Tisbury; he married Betsy Cleveland , daughter of John Cleveland and Katherine Look , on 24 Apr 1814 at Tisbury; he died on 19 Feb 1825 at Tisbury, at age 42 ; he was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury. He appeared on the census of 1820 at Tisbury. He was a physician.

Betsy Cleveland was born on 30 Jul 1790 at Tisbury. She was a seamstress on 18 Apr 1826 at Tisbury. She appeared on the census of 1830 at Tisbury. She appeared on the census of 1840 at New Bedford, Bristol, MA. She may have resided on 20 Oct 1845 at Boston, MA. She probably resided on 9 Mar 1848 at New Bedford, Bristol, MA. She appeared on the census of 2 Sep 1850 at New Bedford, Bristol, MA (Aged 60, with daughter Susan Sherman's family). She resided in 1859 at 162 County (home of Frederick Homer), New Bedford, Bristol, MA ('widow'). She resided in 1867 at 120 County (home of Frederick Homer), New Bedford, Bristol, MA ('widow'). She died on 9 Sep 1867 at Home of Frederick Homer, New Bedford, Bristol, MA, at age 77 (of 'Old Age', 'Widow of the late Dr. Silas West, of Martha's Vineyard.')

6. William West

was born on 11 Feb 1785 at Tisbury; he married Mary Poole, daughter of William Poole and Abigail Pease, on 23 Mar 1809 at Chilmark (Intention recorded 12 Nov 1808); he died on 27 Aug 1854 at Tisbury, at age 69 (of 'Palsey', mariner); he was buried at Vineyard Haven Village Cem., Tisbury.

He appeared appeared on the censuses of 1810-1850 in Tisbury. He was a mariner.

Mary Poole also went by the name of Polly. She was born on 5 May 1786 at Chilmark. She died on 28 Jul 1855 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury, at age 69 (of 'Pulminary Oedema.'). She was buried at Vineyard Haven Village Cem., Tisbury.

Benjamin P. West was born in Jun 1810; he died on 26 Oct 1815 at Tisbury, at age 5; he was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

William West Jr. was born on 14 Sep 1812 at Tisbury; he married Abra Washburn Blish, daughter of William Blish and Katharine Luce, on 25 Sep 1842 at Tisbury ; he died on 23 Jun 1861 at Tisbury, at age 48; his estate was probated in 1861 (His real estate was valued at $900 and his personal estate valued at $3099. His personal estate included shares in the barks Helen Augusta and Marcella)

Although there are many records of a 'William West' sailing in the area, we can definitely identify this William West (by his age and birthplace) as having sailed on Ship Enterprise of New Bedford which left on 14 Jul 1828 and returned 19 Jun 1829, and on the Ship Hope of New Bedford which left on 30 Jan 1830 and returned either 18 Feb 1831 or 31 Jan 1832. He was described as aged 16, 5 feet 2 inches tall, with light complexion and brown hair in 1830. He was Mariner, aged 37 on 18 Sep 1850 at Tisbury. He left a will on 22 May 1854 at Tisbury (His will, dated 22 May 1854, was proved 2 Sep 1861). He was listed as a 'master mariner,' aged 45 on 26 Jun 1860 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury. His probate papers mentions 'Abra W. West...having been the mother of two children by the said William West Jr. ... husband, both of whom died in their minority' in 1861. 'No Issue Surviving.'

23. Capt. Charles West '2nd', born 1 Jun 1815 at Tisbury; married Betsey L. Dillingham.

24. Benjamin P. West, born 21 Aug 1817 at Tisbury; married Martha J. Winslow.

25. Emily S. West, born 3 May 1820 at Tisbury; married Capt. Jacob Clifford.

26. Mary P. West, born 18 Jun 1823 at Tisbury; married John Buckley.

27. Jeruel West , born 12 May 1827 at Tisbury; married Deborah A. Norton.

Sarah Merry West was born in Sep 1829; she died on 1 Jul 1832 at age 2; she was buried at Vineyard Haven Village Cem., Tisbury.

7. Deborah West

also went by the name of 'Depza'; she was born on 23 Apr 1787 at Tisbury; she married Capt. Thomas Harlock Smith, son of David Smith and Sarah Skiff, on 20 Dec 1810 at Tisbury; she died on 27 Apr 1859 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury, at age 72; she was buried in the Smith Lot, Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

She appeared on the census of 1850 at Tisbury (aged 63, with two sons).

Capt. Thomas Harlock Smith was born on 4 Aug 1786 at Edgartown. He was Mariner. He appeared on the census of 1820-1850 at Tisbury. He left a will on 2 Dec 1863. He died on 6 Jan 1868 at Holmes Hole, Tisbury, at age 81. He was buried in the Smith Lot, Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
