Part Seven:
Descendants of Deborah (West) Smith

This is part of a manuscript I am writing titled The Descendants of Capt. Jeruel West and Deborah Shaw of Frog Alley, Tisbury, MA. All sources are available upon request! If you have any additions, corrections, or suggestions, please email me!

700. DEBORAH "DEPZA" WEST was born on 23 Apr 1787 in Tisbury, Dukes County, Massachusetts, the youngest child of Jeruel and Deborah West. She married CAPT. THOMAS HARLOCK SMITH, son of DAVID SMITH and SARAH SKIFF, on 20 Dec 1810 in Tisbury. She died on 27 Apr 1859 in Holmes Hole, aged 72, and is buried next to her husband in the Smith family lot in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

She was listed on the Tisbury census of 1800 in the household of her father; on the Tisbury census of 1810 with her widowed mother; and on the Tisbury censuses of 1820, 1830, and 1840 with her husband. In August 1830 she was listed among the heirs of her father Jeruel West who sold the family Frog Alley homestead to brother James West. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 63, with her husband and son Alexander, and on the Tisbury census of June 1855, aged 68, with her husband and Alexander.

Capt. Thomas Harlock Smith was born on 4 Aug 1786 in Edgartown. He appeared with his wife and three sons on the Tisbury census of 1820, and on the Tisbury census of 1830 with his wife and six children.

Capt. Smith was a wealthy whaler and entrepreneur who bought and sold dozens of lots in Tisbury throughout his lifetime. Some of his early land purchases included a lot of woodland he bought for $20 on 7 Jul 1821 at Holmes Hole Neck from Peter West and others, a four-acre lot known as "the Pasture" (formerly belonging to Jonathan Manter) which he bought from William Downs for $150 on 14 Mar 1831, and his father-in-law Jeruel West's Frog Alley homestead which he bought from his brother-in-law James West for $200 on 22 Jul 1832 "and to support [James'] Mother, Mrs. Deborah West during her natural life." Both of these latter two deeds refer to Thomas Smith as a Tisbury "trader."

Capt. Smith was also mentioned as the owner of a lot in 1825 on the shore of Holmes Hole Harbor, adjacent to the lands of Isaac Winslow, William Daggett Jr., Jethro Hillman, and Zenas Dillingham, and presumably very close to the Jeruel West homestead. This may have been part of the same lot (with a dwelling house) he sold for $500 on 23 Sep 1828 to Timothy Pease, which was adjacent to Jethro Hillman, Timothy Pease (formerly James Winslow), William Daggett, William West, the road from the harbor to West Chop, and the North District school house. This lot wrapped around the school house lot, and was previously owned by his brother-in-law James West who sold the schoolhouse lot to the town. This sale also called Capt. Smith a "trader."

On 28 Aug 1830, Capt. Smith (a "mariner"), his wife Deborah, his mother-in-law, and twelve other heirs of Capt. Jeruel West sold the Jeruel West Frog Alley homestead (near James Winslow, the harbor, and a "little pond") to James Shaw West for $400. On 15 Jul 1835 Thomas H. Smith (a Tisbury "mariner") and Deborah again(!) sold the Jeruel West homestead for $650 to George West 3d of Tisbury, mariner. (**Obviously I still need to sort out this title of this property!**)

He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1840, with his wife Deborah and their three sons Thomas, Alphonso, and Alexander. His census listing is adjacent to Lothrop Merry and to his son David Smith and is two entries from his brother-in-law Albert West. Based on the adjacent entries in the 1840 census, I suspect he was probably living just south of what is now Owen Park.

As an example of one of the many land transactions Capt. Smith made, on 10 Jul 1840 Capt. Smith (a Tisbury "yeoman") bought a lot in Holmes Hole (adjacent to Leander Daggett, Thomas Harding, John W. Howland, Charles Smith, and the "new road") from Joseph and Betsey Dias for $135. (Could this "new road" have been William Street?) On 12 Apr 1841 he sold what was probably the same lot (near Joseph Dias, "the new street", and Charles Downs) for $200 to Freeman Daggett, giving him a very nice profit in less than a year.

Capt. Smith was a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Holmes Hole, and on 12 Oct 1840 he and the other trustees (including his brother-in-law James West) bought 32 rods of land "at or near...the head of the harbor," near the fork in the roads from Holmes Hole to Edgartown and to West Tisbury (bounded by the land and road of Jane Luce and the land of Thomas N. Hillman) from Tisbury trader Jane Luce for $100 "for the purpose of building a parsonage house thereon." I am uncertain what became of this lot, but on 28 Apr 1845 an indenture was made between William and Jane Daggett and the trustees for $250 for the building of a church on the lot in Holmes Hole where the present stone church now stands, bounded on the south by Methodist Street (now Church Street), on the west by William Street, and on the north by William C. Downs' lot ("now occupied by Albert West.") On 3 Apr 1848 a committee of the trustees (William Daggett, James West, and Thomas H. Smith) bought the Holmes Hole property containing the former Methodist Meeting House from David Porter West and Thomas N. Russell for $575. (I believe this is now the site of the present Vineyard Playhouse building.)

Smith served as first officer on the ship Sharon of Fairhaven, MA, which left for the Pacific on 25 May 1841 under master Howes Norris (who happened to also be married to Smith's niece.) Capt. Norris, who has been described as "brutal" and "deranged" was killed on November 6th by mutinying "Kanakas" after most of the crew had lowered for whales. Capt. Smith (after recapturing the ship from the mutineers) completed the voyage as master, and returned to port on 10 Feb 1845. The log of this voyage is kept at the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society. (Also see Anatomy of a Mutiny / Ship Sharon, 1842 by Philip F. Purrington (Old Dartmouth Historical Society, #75, New Bedford, 1968.) for the full account of the mutiny.)

A land purchase on Holmes Hole Neck in January 1842 called Capt. Smith a Tisbury "master mariner," and another purchase on the Neck in February 1842 called him a Tisbury "mariner." He was also known to have purchased land on West Chop near Point Pond by this time, at least some of which he kept for the rest of his life.

He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 63, "mariner," with his wife and son Alexander. Based on the names adjacent to Capt. Smith in the census, we can definitely place him just north of what is now Owen Park. He appeared on the Tisbury census of June 1855, aged 70, "mariner," with his wife and son Alexander. Land transactions in March 1854 and December 1857 call Capt. Smith a Tisbury "yeoman."

On the 1858 Walling Map Holmes Hole inset, there is a house marked "T. Smith" on the south side of what is now Owen Park. This house - in which he probably resided since at least 1840 - is described in a pamphlet Old Houses in Vineyard Haven 1712-1830: "Owned by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jay. Built by Capt. Thomas Harlock Smith in the early 1800's. It remained in his family for four generations. He was first mate of the whaleship Sharon at the time of the mutiny in which the captain was killed (one of the famous horror stories of whaling) and completed the voyage as captain." Mrs. Howes Norris adds in her pamphlet, Sketches of Old Homes in Our Village, "the house of Mr. Alphonso Smith of New Bedford ... was built by [his great-grandfather] Captain Thomas Harlock Smith, a successful sea captain. At one time he kept a store of vessel supplies below his house." The Walling map also shows another house marked "T. H. Smith" on the west side of Main street between Church Street and Drummer Lane near the present Cronigs Real estate, which presumably was one of Smith's many real estate purchases or perhaps a shop.

Capt. Smith appeared on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 73, living with his son Alphonso and his family. His real estate was valued at $2200 and his personal estate at $1000. Comparing the order of the census with the 1858 map, this is undoubtedly the house marked "T. Smith" near Owen Park. He left a will on 2 Dec 1863. He appeared on the census of 15 Jul 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 77, widower, "farmer," with the families of Alphonso and Matthew L. Smith. This census also noted that he had become deaf.

He died on 6 Jan 1868 in Holmes Hole, aged 81, of "old age," and is buried in the Smith Lot in Village Cemetery, Tisbury. His death record calls him a Tisbury "mariner."

Children of DEBORAH WEST and CAPT. THOMAS HARLOCK SMITH were as follows:

701. DAVID SMITH was born 14 Dec 1811 in Tisbury. He married AMANDA MERRY.

702. CAPT. THOMAS HARLOCK SMITH JR. was born 4 Nov 1813 in Tisbury. He married ELIZABETH W. DUNHAM.

703. ALPHONSO D. SMITH was born 27 Dec 1815 in Tisbury. He married SARAH DAVIS HOWES.

iv. EMILY SMITH was born on 4 Aug 1818. She died on 25 Nov 1819 in Tisbury, aged one, and is buried in the Smith Lot in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

v. SILAS W. SMITH was born in Jun 1821. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1830 in the household of his father. He died on 7 Jan 1838 (Roy Norton notes that he was "lost at sea"), and his gravestone is found in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

vi. MARY ANN SMITH was born on 11 Sep 1824. She died on 22 Sep 1831 in Tisbury, aged seven, and is buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

704. ALEXANDER WEEKS SMITH was born 8 Oct 1827 in Tisbury. He married FANNY WOODBURY LUCE.

701. DAVID SMITH (Deborah1 West) was born on 14 Dec 1811 in Tisbury. He married AMANDA MERRY, daughter of LOTHROP MERRY and ABIGAIL PEASE, on 24 Sep 1836 in Tisbury. He died on 10 Dec 1878 in Tisbury, aged 66, of a "hemmorage of bladder," and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

He appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1820 and 1830 in the household of his father, and on the 1840 Tisbury census with his wife, adjacent to both his father's house (presumably his Owen Park home) and his uncle Albert West's house. This census categorized his occupation under "Navigation of the Ocean." The 1847 birth record of his daughter Abbie calls him a Tisbury "boat builder," as does the 1849 birth record of his daughter Josephine. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census as a 38-year-old boat builder with his wife, four children, and his father-in-law. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 44, boat builder, with his wife and children, in the home of Hannah H. Smith. (His daughter Eliza's obituary suggests that by 1855 he lived "down West Chop way.") He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 48, with his wife and children. (This census valued his real estate at $800 and his personal estate at $1800.) He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 53, boat builder, with his wife and children, and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 57, "lumber dealer," with his wife and children. (This census valued his real estate at $2000 and his personal estate at $500.) His December 1878 death record called him a Tisbury boat builder.

His daughter Eliza's 1924 obituary notes "It is said that Mr. Smith was the first marine reporter at Vineyard Haven; for years he did this work, and in addition conducted a lumber yard and was prominent in the community. His work brought him into contact with shipping men and ships in the palmiest days of clippers and whalers."

David and Amanda presumably owned the home on the north side of Owen Park (the second house down from Main street) which was later owned by their daughter Eliza (Smith) Lord. Mrs. Howes Norris remarked, "The home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lord...formerly stood a little north of the Gould house at the Neck. It was moved to the village on wheels and drawn by 40 yoke of oxen. Barzilla Luce had the contract and farmers from all over the Island came to assist. This house was the property of Mr. Lothrop Merry, the grandfather of Mrs. Lord, and has always remained in the family."

Amanda Merry was born on 16 Sep 1815 in (West?) Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1840 in the household of her husband, and on Tisbury census of 1850, aged 34, with her husband, four children, and elderly father. She appeared on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 40, again with her husband, children, and father.

On 20 Dec 1858, Amanda (and David) Smith along with Jane (and James) Winslow, Eunice (and Newel) Manchester, and nine other heirs to the estate of Shubael Merry of Tisbury, sold his land and buildings in West Tisbury to widow Rebecca Merry of Tisbury.

Amanda appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 45, with her husband and children; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 49, "housewife," with her husband and children; on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 53, "keeping house," with her husband and children; and on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 65, widow, "keeping house," with her children.

Amanda died on 25 Apr 1883 in Vineyard Haven, aged 67, of pneumonia, and was buried on 28 Apr 1883 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

Children of DAVID SMITH and AMANDA MERRY were as follows:

i. EMILY A. SMITH was born on 26 Aug 1842 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged seven; on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 13; on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 17; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 22, "seamstress"; and on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 27, (no occupation), all with her parents. She was listed as a Tisbury resident in December 1878. She appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 37, single, with her mother. She was listed as a resident of Tisbury in September 1883. She died on 29 Nov 1888 in Vineyard Haven, aged 46, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury. She never married.

ii. DAVID L. SMITH was born on 10 Jul 1845 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged four; on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged ten; on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 14, "boat builder app."; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 19, "clerk"; and on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 24, (no occupation), all with his parents. He appeared on the Tisbury census of June 1880, aged 36, single, with his mother. The census taker noted that he was very sick with consumption on the day the census was taken. He died on 31 Oct 1881 in Tisbury, aged 36, of "phthisis pulmonalis" (consumption) and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury. He was called an unmarried Tisbury "expressman" in his death record. He never married.

iii. ABBIE P. M. SMITH was born on 8 May 1847 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged three; on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged eight; on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 13; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 17, "pupil"; and on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 23, (no occupation), all with her parents. She was listed as a Tisbury resident in December 1878. She appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 34, single, with her mother. She was listed as a Tisbury resident in September 1883. She died on 16 Oct 1890 in St. Margaret's House, Boston, MA, aged 43, of "Septicaemia from Ischio(?) / rectal abscess following caparatory(?)" (The Gazette noted that she died "at the hospital in Boston ... where she went for medical treatment a few weeks ago.") Her funeral was held by Rev. D. W. Stevens on October 19th, but she was buried by Rev. Jas. E. Hamilton in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury on the 20th due to a "severe storm" on the 19th. She never married.

iv. JOSEPHINE CALISTA SMITH was born on 2 Nov 1849 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census with her parents, aged six months. She died "suddenly" on 13 Sep 1852 in Holmes Hole, aged two, of "diarhoea," and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

v. ELIZA COFFIN SMITH was born on 12 Jun 1855 in the Tisbury home her obituary described as the "old David Smith homestead...down West Chop way." She married EDWARD CLIFTON LORD, son of JEREMIAH R. LORD and SARAH E. ALLEN, on 15 Feb 1885 in Vineyard Haven. She died on 26 Jan 1924 in the home of her birth in Tisbury, aged 68, of "carcinoma of liver," and was buried on 29 Jan 1924 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

Eliza appeared on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged one month; on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged five; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged nine; and on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 14, "attending school," all with her parents. She was listed as a Tisbury resident in December 1878. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 24, single, with her mother. She was listed again as a resident of Tisbury in September 1883, and in her 1885 marriage record was called "at home" in Tisbury. She appeared on the census of June 1900 on Main St., Tisbury, aged 44, again on the census of April 1910 on Main St., aged 54, and finally on the census of January 1920 in Tisbury, aged 64, all with her husband.

Edward Clifton Lord was born in July 1858 in Manchester, MA. His obituary states he came "to the Vineyard at the age of 20 from Manchester, Mass., his native town. At that time he entered the employ of the late Howes Norris Sr., whose place of business was at Eastville, and later became identified with the ship chandelry business which he carried on at Vineyard Haven for many years. He supplied the great fleet of coastwise vessels with all supplies and stores and owned several vessels himself. In connection with this business he was Associated Press correspondent for nearly fifty years. Always interested in public matters, he was three times elected to the board of selectmen of Tisbury, once to fill an unexpired term and twice for the full term. The gradual decline of coastwise shipping caused him to dispose of his waterfront business and for a number of years he has conducted a shoe store, where the older captains of his acquaintance visited him whenever in port." His first wife's obituary adds that "Mr. Lord later became a reporter, and for years has been connected with the port, not only as a reporter, but as port officer." His second wife's obituary calls him the "proprietor of Vineyard Shoe Store." Stan Lair recalled that he had his shoe store on the corner of Main and Church streets, and was a selectman in 1930.

Their home, presumably inherited from Mrs. Lord's mother, Amanda, was on the north side of Owen Park, the second house down off of Main street. Ed appeared on the census of 1880 in Cottage City, aged 22, "keeping store," a single boarder in the home of Howes and Martha Norris. His 1885 marriage record called him a Cottage City "marine reporter." In 1897 he was listed as a "ship chandler" on North Main St., Tisbury. He appeared on the census of June 1900 on Main St., Tisbury, aged 41, "grocer," with his wife. The 1907 directory of Tisbury listed him as a "marine reporter and ship chandler" living "off Main, near Beachside." He appeared on the census of April 1910 again on Main St., Tisbury, aged 51, "retail merchant / ship chandlery," with his wife. The 1915 Tisbury tax list calls him a 56-year-old "ship chandler," living "off Main St." He appeared on the Tisbury census of January 1920, aged 61, "Associated Press reporter," with his wife.

Ed Lord's chandlery was on the shore at the end of Grove Street. For more information about this chandlery, see The Captain's Daughters of Martha's Vineyard edited by Eliot Eldridge Macy.

Eliza died in 1924, and Ed married (2nd) EMMA DOWNS CLOUGH, daughter of BENJAMIN CLOUGH and OCTAVIA CROCKER, on 4 Nov 1927 in Tisbury.

Ed Lord died on 6 Oct 1934 at his home in Tisbury, aged 76, of "chronic myocarditis / chronic nephritis / arterioclerosis." (The Gazette reported that "Edward C. Lord, well known Vineyard Haven business man, died suddenly at his home on Friday night as a result of a heart attack. Mr. Lord's health had not been of the best since a previous attack of illness during the late summer.") He was buried on 8 Oct 1934 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury. His death record calls him a Tisbury "merchant."

Eliza Smith and Ed Lord had no children.

702. CAPT. THOMAS HARLOCK SMITH JR. (Deborah1 West) was born on 4 Nov 1813 in Tisbury. He married ELIZABETH W. DUNHAM on 21 Mar 1841 in Tisbury. He died on 16 Aug 1863 in Shanghai, China, aged 49.

Thomas Jr. appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1820, 1830, and 1840 in the household of his father. Although there were many, many Thomas Smiths who sailed on whaling ships in this area (including several from the Island) he was probably the 4' 9" tall boy (as measured at ages 15 and 17) with light complexion and "sandy" hair who sailed on the Ship Leonidas of New Bedford from 8 Aug 1829 to 26 Mar 1831, and the Ship Brandt of New Bedford from 16 Jul 1831 to 25 Feb 1832.

On 25 Oct 1840, Dr. Leroy Yale reported in journal that "This afternoon Mr. Thomas H. Smith called on me for advice on account of an he received [sic.] in the neck or throat from Thos. N. Hillman. The throat over the region of the larynx was swelld a little + on the right side of the larynx was a spot one inch in diameter acchymosia[?] + a good deal of tenderness on both sides - There was considerable horseness of the voice + difficult + Painful digtutition[?]." (It was not clear whether this was Thomas Smith Jr. or his father Thomas Smith Sr., nor is it clear whether this wound was due to an accident or a fight. Thomas Hillman was close in age to Thomas Smith Jr.)

Thomas Jr. was called a Tisbury "master mariner" in the April 1849 birth record of his son. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 34, mariner, and on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 40, mariner, with his wife and son. Neither he nor his wife appear in the 1860 Tisbury census, although their son is listed with Thomas's brother in this census.

The 29 Jan 1864 issue of the Gazette reported the following: "DIED. At Shanghai, China, Aug. 16th, Capt. Thomas H. Smith, Jr., late of bark Cobang, aged 50 years. - Salem papers please copy."

Elizabeth W. Dunham was born on 24 Jul 1827 in Tisbury. She appeared on the census of 24 Sep 1850 in Tisbury, aged 22, with her husband and son, and again on the Tisbury census of June 1855, aged 28, with her husband and son.

I have no record of Elizabeth after 1855, and she may have left town. She does not appear in the 1860 or 1870 Tisbury censuses, nor could I find a death record for her in Tisbury between 1855 and 1875.

Children of CAPT. THOMAS HARLOCK SMITH JR. and ELIZABETH W. DUNHAM were as follows:

i. AMELIA W. SMITH was born on 14 Dec 1845, and died on 26 Oct 1846 in Tisbury.

ii. ALEXANDER A. SMITH was born on 13 Apr 1849 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged one, with his parents. He appeared in the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 11, with his grandfather Thomas Smith Sr. and his uncle Alphonso Smith. On 2 Dec 1863 his grandfather willed him $300. I have no record of him after this date - he does not appear in the 1870 Tisbury census, nor does his death record appear in Tisbury during 1863-1875. (Did he leave the Island with his mother after the death of his father in 1863?)

703. ALPHONSO D. SMITH (Deborah1 West) was born on 27 Dec 1815 in Tisbury. He married SARAH DAVIS HOWES, daughter of LOT HOWES and DEBORAH _____, between 1840 and 1844. He died on 26 Jan 1873 in Vineyard Haven, aged 57, of consumption, and is buried in the Smith lot in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

He appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1820, 1830, and 1840 in the household of his father, and on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 34, "mariner," with his wife, daughter, and parents. The 1853 birth record of his son called him a Tisbury "boat builder." He appeared on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 39, boat builder, living with his wife and children in the home of Z. N. and Elizabeth Heald, adjacent to the home of his parents. He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 43, boat builder, with his wife and children, and on the census of July 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 49, boat builder, living in the home of his father with his wife and children as well as Matthew L. and Sarah E. Smith. He appeared on the census of 7 Jun 1870 in Tisbury, aged 53, boat builder, with wife and son. This census values his real estate at $2000 and his personal estate at $150. His 1873 town death record called him a "boat builder," although his probate documents call him both a "cooper" and a "mechanic." At his death his real estate was valued at $1400 and his personal estate at $208.50.

Sarah Davis Howes was born in South Dennis, MA, probably in December 1817 although the records vary. She appeared on the census of 1 Oct 1850 in Tisbury, aged 30, with her husband and daughter; on the Tisbury census of June 1855, aged 38, with her husband and children; on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 42, with her husband and children; on the census of July 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 48, "housewife," with her husband and children; and on the census of 7 Jun 1870 in Tisbury, aged 43, "keeping house," with her husband and children.

After the death of her husband in 1873 she moved to New Bedford, where she was mentioned as a resident in June 1885, and she was called a resident of 524 Purchase St., New Bedford at the time of her death. She died on 21 Sep 1885 in New Bedford of consumption. Her death record called her a "housekeeper." She is buried in the Smith Lot, Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

Children of ALPHONSO D. SMITH and SARAH DAVIS HOWES were as follows:

i. SARAH ELIZABETH SMITH was born about 1843 in Fall River, MA. She married CAPT. MATTHEW LUCE SMITH, son of ELIJAH SMITH and LYDIA CLIFFORD, on 26 Jun 1861 in Tisbury. She died on 7 Dec 1893 in New Bedford of "paralysis" and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged five, with her parents; on the Tisbury census of June 1855, aged 12, with her parents; and on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 16, with her parents. Her June 1861 marriage record called her a resident of Tisbury. She appeared on the census of July 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 21, "boarding" with her husband in the home of her father; on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 27, "keeping house," with her husband; and again on the census of June 1880 in Tisbury, aged 36, "keeping house," with her husband. She resided on 12 Jun 1885 in Vineyard Haven.

Capt. Matthew Luce Smith was born on "Leap Day," 29 Feb 1828, in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 21, mariner, with her mother, and on the 1855 census of Tisbury, aged 26, mariner, living with the family of James L. Smith. He did not appear in the 1860 Tisbury census. His 1861 marriage record called him a Tisbury mariner. The September 1862 Tisbury draft list noted him as "at sea." He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 35, seaman, living with his wife in the home of her father and grandfather, and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 44, mariner, with his wife. This census valued his real estate at $2700 and his personal estate at $8000. He appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 50, sailor, with his wife.

On 15 Mar 1889 the Gazette reported that "Capt. and Mrs. Matthew L. Smith left Chicago last Monday. They will return home via Niagara Falls. His 1910 marriage notice in the Gazette calls him "one of our prominent business men" and notes that "after the wedding journey the happy couple will reside here." Mr. Smith...had been a lifelong resident of Tisbury. Until ill health forced him to abandon his duties, he was a familiar figure at the S.B.S. store. Mr. Smith led a quiet and useful life, his business being his main interest as long as he was able to be out and about. He belonged to no organizations other than his church, but he had a host of friends, attracted by his pleasant personality in business and social life. Mr. Smith was affiliated with Christ Methodist Church."

Stan Lair recalled on an audio tape, "Art and Burt. They both worked in SBS, Swift Bodfish Swift Company Grocery Store, which was right there on Main street, next to the theater. And as far as I can remember that's all either one of them did all their lives."

Ella H. Holmes was born on 2 Sep 1858 in Holmes Hole. Her obituary reads, "Mrs. Smith was a lifelong resident of Vineyard Haven, where she was born, the daughter of John Holmes and Abbie Harding Holmes. Although she does not appear in the 1860 Tisbury census, she does appear on the Tisbury census of June 1870, aged 11, "attending school," with her parents.

705. GORHAM B. SMITH (Alphonso2, Deborah1 West) was born on 13 Aug 1853 in Holmes Hole. He married ELLA FRANCES BESSE, daughter of DANIEL E. BESSE and MARY A. He appeared on the census of July 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 11, with his parents, and on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 16, "attending school," with his parents.

After the death of his father in January 1873, Gorham's mother was granted a widow's allowance on 20 Oct 1873 from her late husband's estate because she "has under her charge a family consisting of one son Gorham B. Smith aged 19 yrs." About this time Gorham moved to New Bedford, where he was listed in the 1873 city directory as a clerk employed by grocer Robert S. Lawton at 185 Purchase St., and boarding at 72 Walden St. The 1875 New Bedford directory gives an identical listing, except that he was now boarding at 126 Purchase St., and by 1877 it states that he boarded at 133 1/2 Purchase St. The 1879 New Bedford directory lists him as a clerk working at 295 Purchase St. and boarding at 524 Purchase St.

Gorham's January 1879 marriage record calls him a "clerk." He appeared on the census of June 1880 at 46 Sycamore Street, New Bedford, aged 27, "Clerk in Store," with his wife Ella. His May 1898 death records call him both an "Asst. Yard Master Rail Road" (Tisbury records) and a "clerk" (New Bedford records). His Gazette obituary states "Mr. Smith was one of our most beloved young men, son of the late Alphonso Smith. He removed to New Bedford several years ago. He leaves a widow and one son, Alphonso."

Ella Frances Besse was born on 22 Feb 1854 in New Bedford, MA, and was listed as a resident of that city in her 1879 marriage record. She appeared on the 1880 New Bedford census at 46 Sycamore Street, aged 25, "keeps house," with her husband.

After her husband died she appeared as a widow in the New Bedford directory in 1898 at 253 Chestnut St., and in 1899 at 101 Chestnut St. She appeared on the census of June 1900 in a rented house on 101 Chestnut St., New Bedford, aged 46, with her son and brother. She listed in the 1901 New Bedford directory as a widow at 101 Chestnut St.

On 10 Dec 1901 she married Capt. Matthew Luce Smith, son of Elijah Smith and Lydia Clifford, in Tisbury. He was 26 years her senior, and the widower of her late husband's sister. Her marriage record called her a resident of Cottage City.

Ella died on 6 Jan 1905 in Vineyard Haven, aged 50, of "cerebral apoplexy." One newspaper noted that she "died very suddenly this morning. She was sitting at the breakfast table, when she complained of severe pains in her head. She went to the sitting room while Dr. Mayhew was summoned, but before her arrival she had expired." The Gazette stated that her death occurred "very suddenly" and mentions that she was active in the Sunday School, Woman's Christian Union, "the society affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, the order of the Eastern Star," the literary club (Want to Know Club), and the WCTU. She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury. Her obituary adds that Ella "was well liked by all. Mrs. Smith was a prominent worker in the Methodist church, and was also connected with the Eastern Star lodge."

He appeared on the Tisbury census of June 1900 on a street with no name, aged 32, "groceries salesman," with his wife and children and a servant. The 1907 directory of Tisbury lists him as a partner of "Look, Smith, & Co., provisions" on Union Street, and a resident of William Street. The 1910-11 directory of Tisbury similarly lists him as "Smith, Arthur L. (Look, Smith & Co.), provisions, Main, h. Franklin, cor. Church," suggesting that he may have inherited his mother's home on the corner of Franklin and Church streets. Luce Smith, and had lived his entire life in the town of his birth. By profession, he had been in the grocery business since boyhood working for other, older firms in the town before he became an active partner in the corporation in 1910. His experience in the business covered a period of more than sixty years....An energetic man, Mr. Smith had missed but few working days and he had worked in his store until hospitalized, barring a few days when illness prevented.

"GARDENING HIS HOBBY. Through his active years his hobby was gardening and his vegetables and flowers excited the admiration of all who know and appreciate these things. Though his acreage was not great, it was large for a spare-time occupation and he studied agriculture to a degree that made him an authority on the planting and handling of various vegetable crops and the care of soil." "Friendly, kind-hearted, and a man who loved people, he had but little social life beyond that which is a part of the grocery business., and he held membership only in the Men's Club of Christ Methodist Church. Yet his friends are literally legion, for the world that knew him was drawn to him and old and young knew him only as 'Art,' which was a thing that gave him pleasure." His obituary also mentions "seven grand-children and eight great-grand-children."

Stan Lair recalled on an audio tape, "Art and Burt. They both worked in SBS, Swift Bodfish Swift Company Grocery Store, which was right there on Main street, next to the theater. And as far as I can remember that's all either one of them did all their lives".
