FAMILY OF MARIANO MADEIRAS
Oak Bluffs Farmer



1. MARIANO MADEIRAS, (also Marion, Merian) born Aug. 27, 1849 (or 1847?) in the Azores (on St. George or St. Michael), the son of John Maderios and Anna Carania. He immigrated about 1884-5, and came to Oak Bluffs about 1887. (He may have been the "Marinner de Medeiros" AKA Marinner Marshall who bought land from Louis Machado in Dukes County in August 1886.) He bought a half-parcel of land in the "Forrest Hill" section of Oak Bluffs along Wing Road in 1889, and he bought a lot in 1894 in Cottage City on Lagoon Heights Road. He owned property on Wing Road in 1916 . He appeared in the 1900 and 1910 Cottage City censuses as a farmer, and was listed as a farmer, living on Norris Ave., Oak Bluffs in 1907. He was called an Oak Bluffs farmer in 1916. He was illiterate. He died Feb. 6, 1916 in Oak Bluffs of intestinal cancer .
He married Philomena Jasino / Swartz / Amaral (sources vary), called "Fannie," about 1869-74. She was born about 1847-9 in San Miguel. She came from the Azores directly to Oak Bluffs in 1889. She never learned to speak any English, and was illiterate. She was probably the widow "Fannie Maderios" who appears in the 1920 Oak Bluffs census on Lagoon Road adjacent to John Madeiras (11). She lived to see five generations of descendants, and died on July 28, 1939.
They had the following children (in addition to five who died as children before 1900):

*12. ROSA C. MADEIRAS,
b. in 1882. She came to United States as a child. She m. Frank Bernard (10) before 1905. They were living in Oak Bluffs in 1903-5 and 1916. She d. July 17, 1956 in Tisbury.
13. MANUEL MADEIRAS, b. Oct. 1889 in Mass.
He was living in Boston in 1916, in Oak Bluffs in 1939, and in New York City in 1935.
14. ANTONE MADEIRAS, called "Tony," b. Jan. 8, 1891 in Cottage City. He was living in Boston in 1916, and in Woburn in 1935 and 1939.

 

10. FRANK C. MADEIRAS, (Merian1), b. August 15, 1876. He was b. Aug. 1875 in San Miguel, and came directly to Oak Bluffs in 1889 at the age of 14. He was naturalized in 1902. He was listed as a Cottage City laborer in 1896, and a Cottage City plumber in 1898, 1899, 1900 1910, and 1920. He was listed a plumber living on Norris Ave., Oak Bluffs in 1907 and 1941. He had his own plumbing & heating contracting business for 30 years in Oak Bluffs which his son Richard eventually took over. He died at home on Norris Ave., Oak Bluffs on May 22, 1941.
He married Mary A. Pachico Combra (10) in Cottage City on 15 Jan 1896. She was born in June 15, 1879 on San Miguel, the dau. of Frank Pachico Combra (1) and Augusta Amelia de Conceicao (and the sister of Mrs. Fannie Childs of Hyannis. She immigrated about 1885-6, and came to Oak Bluffs about the same time. She was living in Oak Bluffs in 1928 and 1941. She d. at home on Feb. 15, 1969.
They had the following children:

*20. MARY JULIA MADEIRAS, called "May", b. December 15, 1896 in Cottage City. She was an Oak Bluffs bookkeeper in 1915. . She m. Manuel O. (Pachico) Perry (210) on Apr. 15, 1915 in Oak Bluffs. He was born c. 1891-2 in Cottage City, the son of Joseph O. Perry and Isabelle Perreira. She appears married but without her husband in 1920 census of her parents. She was living in Oak Bluffs in 1941.
21. ANGELINE R. MADEIRAS, (also known as "Inglina" or Ingenia"?), b. March 13, 1898 in Cottage City. She was working as a bookkeeper and living in the home of her parents on Lagoon Road in 1920. She m. Edward J. Silvia (12) on September 25, 1950. He was b. August 15, 1884, the son of Adrian Silvia (1) and Isabella Jacinto. He had been m(1) to Isabella H. Fragoza and m(2) to Isabella T. Hurley. Edward J. Silvia (12) d. June 1, 1961. Angeline R. Madeiras (21) d. July 29, 1958. She lived in Oak Bluffs her whole life.
*22. FLORINE J. MADEIRAS, called "Florence", b. July 15, 1899 in Cottage City. She m. Frank P. Silvia (50) Jan. 15, 1919 in Oak Bluffs. He was born c. 1893-4 in the Azores, the son of Manuel W. Silvia and Mary C. Rose. He was an Oak Bluffs carpenter in 1919. She worked in a candy store in Oak Bluffs where she met her husband. They moved to San Luis Obispo CA about 1941, and to Cuesta-by-the-Sea, Los Osos, CA about 1953, where they were living in 1969. They were listed in San Luis Obispo, CA in 1972 and 1977.
23. RICHARD NORMAN MADEIRAS, b. December 15, 1900(?)Cottage City; d. April 14, 1901Cottage City .
24. FANNY H. MADEIRAS, b. February 15, 1902.
She m. Richard Bentley Frost October 23, 1938. He was from Franklin MA, b. October 19, 1902 in Malden, the son of Herbert Frost and Lauretta Bentley. He was a carpenter, contractor, builder, and Oak Bluffs assessor for many years, but best known as a singer soloist. Fanny H. Madeiras (24) d. June 16, 1970. Richard Bentley Frost d. February 18, 1973Martha's Vineyard Hospital. They were living in Oak Bluffs in1941, 1958, and 1969. They evidently had no children.
*25. RICHARD NORMAN MADEIRAS, b. November 8, 1903.
26. BENJAMIN DAVID MADEIRAS, b. March 5, 1906.
He served in the Army during World War II, and after the war he opened a package store on Ciruit Ave. with John R. Silvia called "The Vineyard Wine Shop," which he sold in 1966. He was an ardent sportsman, "reputed to be one of the best flight shooters on the Island." He lived in Oak Bluffs in 1941, 1958, and 1969, and was living on Barnes Road in 1972 He m. Irene Valentine Mantel/Matel December 9, 1961. She was b. in Melrose MA in 1912, the dau. of Emil Mantel and Valentine Winesky. She had been m(1) to Joseph A. Andrews (420) and m(2) Manuel Alfred Caton, Jr. (20). Benjamin David Madeiras (26) d. January 19, 1972 Martha's Vineyard Hospital.
*27. ELIZABETH MARY MADEIRAS, b. March 1, 1912
; m. George Charles Alley (170). She was living in Oak Bluffs in 1941, 1958, 1969, 1972, and 1977.
*28. FRANCIS CHARLES MADEIRAS, b. January 31, 1915 in Oak Bluffs. She was living in San Luis Obispo, CA, in 1941, and in Oak Bluffs in 1958, 1969, and 1977.
*29. RUTH ANN MADEIRAS, b. February 26, 1918; m(1) Meredith S. Fisher (160) and m(2) Lauress Fisher September 19, 1982. Lauress Fisher was b. July 19, 1913, the son of Thomas West Fisher and Charlotte Hamblen and the brother of Hollis West Fisher (100). Lauress Fisher had been m(1) to Thelma Ferris. [She was called "Mrs. Meredith Fisher" of Oak Bluffs listed as a daughter of Frank in 1941 and sister of Angeline in 1958, and again, of Oak Bluffs, 1969.=GAZ]] She was living in Oak Bluffs in1941, 1958, 1969, 1972, and 1977.

 

11. JOHN MADEIRAS, (Merian1), b. in June 1878 on St. George. He immigrated in 1888, and was a resident of Oak Bluffs since age ten. He obtained citizenship in 1903. He was a Cottage City day laborer in 1900, a Cottage City odd jobs laborer 1910, an Oak Bluffs plumber in 1911, a factory fireman living on Lagoon Road, Oak Bluffs in 1920, and a landscape gardener living on Lagoon Road in 1935. He died in March 1935 at his home on Lagoon Road in Oak Bluffs. .
He m. Fannie L. Silvey/Sylvia/Silvia on Oct. 16, 1912 in Oak Bluffs.
She was born about 1890 in Cottage City, , the dau. of Joseph W. Silvia (-1910) and Marianna Lewis (1863-1937) of Oak Bluffs (and sister of Frank J. Silvia and Manuel Silvia of Oak Bluffs, Joseph W. Silvey of Vineyard Haven, and Mrs. Mary Alley of WT.) She grew up in Oak Bluffs, and was living there in 1937. She d. Aug. 11, 1949 at Martha's Vineyard Hospital following an operation.
They had the following children:

31. EVELYN ROSE MADEIRAS, b. in 1914 in Oak Bluffs. She was living in West Tisbury in 1949, and in Vineyard Haven in 1975. She m. Ernest Enos Duarte (46) April 29, 1940. He was b. in 1912, the son of Joseph Silva (Duart) Duarte (30) and Mary R. Golart (10).
*32. HILDA MAY MADEIRAS, b. July 15, 1915 in Oak Bluffs;
; m. Francis Michael Duart (121) on Oct. 21, 1940. . She was living in Vineyard Haven in 1975.
*33. RALPH JOHN MADEIRAS, b. March 29, 1922.

 

25. RICHARD NORMAN MADEIRAS, (Frank,2 Merian1), b. November 8, 1903 in Oak Bluffs. He lived in Oak Bluffs his whole life. He operated the plumbing contracting business started by his father. He d. December 5, 1977Martha's Vineyard Hospital.
He m. Elizabeth Frances Lewis (121). Called "Susie", she was b. January 13, 1924, the dau. of Manuel Da Rosa Lewis (110) and Angelica Medeiros. She had been m(1) to Henry Sherman Zimmerman. "Susie" died Aug. 30, 1997.

He and Elizabeth Frances Lewis (121) had the following child:

28. FRANCIS CHARLES MADEIRAS, "Frank," (Frank,2 Merian1), b. January 31, 1915 in Oak Bluffs. He was a Oak Bluffs Shoe salesman in 1947, and was living in Oak Bluffs in 1972. He m. Dorothy Jeanette Fuller October 5, 1947. She was b. August 12, 1918, the dau. of Charles C. Fuller and Bertha M. Knights. She was an Oak Bluffs clerk in 1947. She had been m(1) to ________ Brooks. She d. April 7, 1977. Frank Madeiras died Mar. 16, 1998. Francis Charles Madeiras (28) and Dorothy Jeanette Fuller had the following child:

30. ROLAND JOHN MADEIRAS, (John,2 Merian1), b. November 29, 1913 in Oak Bluffs. He was a lifelong resident of Oak Bluffs. He was a carpenter, and helped build the Vineyard Haven-Oak Bluffs bridge, the Oak Bluffs school gym, and several Navy barges during World War II. He held a pricate pilot's license, and his hobby was locksmithing.
He m. Caroline Dorothy Silva (83) September 12, 1940. She was b. May 17, 1914 in Edgartown MA, the dau. of Antone Manuel Silva (70) and Mamie Rose (221). Caroline Dorothy Silva (83) d. June 4, 1984 in Oak Bluffs.
Roland John Madeiras (30) d. October 23, 1975Martha's Vineyard Hospital after a heart attack at work.[obvr, obit] They had the following children:

33. RALPH JOHN MADEIRAS, (John,2 Merian1), b. March 29, 1922. He was living in Oak Bluffs in 1949 and 1975. He m. Dorothy Ann Maury (25) December 14, 1950. She was b. September 24, 1926, the dau. of Hamilton Lincoln Maury (11) and Bertha Mae Esau. Ralph John Madeiras (33) d. August 13, 1985. He and Dorothy Ann Maury had the following children:

FAMILY OF MANUEL J. MADEIROS of Edgartown

30. MANUEL J. MADEIROS, b. c. 1870 in Sao Miguel, the son of Victor Madeiros and Anna S. _____, and the half brother of Henry Madeiros of California. He immigrated with his parents about 1883-4, and as a young man he was an interpreter for the Fall River courts. He and his wife moved from Fall River to Martha's Vineyard about 1901. They lived for a time in West Tisbury (around 1905) before moving to Edgartown. He was working as an odd jobs laborer and living on State Road, Edgartown in 1910, and as a fisherman on State Street, Edgartown in 1920. He was an Edgartown farmer for most of his life. He was also a talented writer of verse. Manuel J. Madeiros (30) d. in September 1958 at the Hathaway Rest Home in Westport.
He m. Margaret D. Perry de Melo AKA Margaret Pereira De Mello c. 1896-7, called "Maggie." She was born about 1880 in Capelas, Portugal,
and immigrated in 1896 to visit her aunt. She d. May 8, 1974.
Manuel and Maggie were living apart by 1925,
and in 1938 Margaret charged Manuel with desertion in Dukes County Superior Court. She was living in Edgartown and he in Westport Center, Bristol Co., Mass. in 1938. She was living in Edgartown in 1958.
They had the following children:

40. MARY I. MADEIROS, b. in 1899 in Fall River. She was a public school teacher in 1920. She graduated from Hyannis Normal School, taught for six years at Southwick, then taught second and third grades at the Edgartown School from 1927 until 1966. She was living, unmarried, in Edgartown in 1958, and in 1974 in the family home on Upper Main St., Edgartown. She died at Mass General Hospital on Oct. 13, 1974.
41. CHARLOTTE VICTORIA MADEIROS, b. December 23, 1900 in Fall River MA. She graduated from Hyannis Normal School. She was a teacher at Westport Point School in 1925. She made local front page news when she mysteriously disappeared after school in Westport one day. (She turned up in a Boston hospital a week later with acute apendicitis.) She was living, unmarried, in Westport Point in 1958, and in the family home on Upper Main St., Edgartown in 1974. She was living in Edgartown in 1976.
42. ANNE A. MADEIROS, b. October(?) 28, 1902. She graduated from Hyannis Normal School. She was living inWorcester in 1925. She was living, unmarried, in Worcester in 1958. She m. George Albert Kent from Newburyport MA. He had been m(1) to ________ and would later m(3) Marie Brown Nickerson Birch. He d. April 5, 1989 in Falmouth MA. Anne Madeiros (42) d. April 6, 1981. She was living on Curtis Lane, Edgartown, in 1974. She was listed as a resident of Edgartown in 1974 and 1976.
43. GEORGE-HENRY MADEIROS, b. October 29, 1905 in West Tisbury.
He was employed briefly by the island boat line, and later by the Fall River line. He was an oiler on one of the steamers of the New York-New Bedford line in 1925. He bought a house on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road in 1932. He and his wife went into the electric appliance business in 1947, and they had a shop on North Water Street near Four Corners. He was living in Edgartown in1973, and on Ocean Heights, Edgartown, in 1974 and 1976. He collected paintings. George Henry Madeiros (43) d. July 28, 1976. He m. Elna Nelson May 2, 1942. She was b. c. 1913-4 in New Bedford MA, the daughter of Ivar V. Nelson of New Bedford. She moved to Martha's Vineyard permanently in 1939. She had been a private nurse in New Bedford, and later joined the staff of the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. She d. April 7, 1973Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. She excelled at swimming.

THE MEDEIROS-ALLEY FAMILY
(The Family of Manuel Pacheco Medeiros)

1. Manuel Pacheco Medeiros, b. _____ in St. Michael. We have no primary records of Manuel, who evidently died before 1900. This family evidently immigrated about 1875-1880.
He married Innocencia Rosa Ferreira.
She was born either Feb. 1840 or about 1833-4 (records vary) on St. Michael. She immigrated about 1880-81. She was living as a widow with her son Antone at his Cottage City home in 1900 and near her son Domingo and his family in Oak Bluffs in 1910. She died after 1910, probably in Oak Bluffs.
She had eleven children (four of whom died before 1900):

? *10. Mary Pacheco Medeiros / Alley, born ____ (prob. born about 1850-60). She m. John Peters DeCosta (AKA John Peters (1) See P566) before 1876, probably in St. Michael. (It is not certain that she is a daughter of Manuel and Innocensia, but her "Pacheco Medeiros" name, coupled with one reference to her as "Mary Alley," and the fact that Manuel and Innocensia was known to have had one additional surviving adult child, is strongly suggestive.)
11. Julia Pacheco Medeiros, b. c. Dec. 18, 1858 in St. Michael. She was an Oak Bluffs housekeeper in 1915, and was living on Vineyard Ave., Oak Bluffs, in 1925. . She died Mar. 29, 1925 in Oak Bluffs of gall bladder cancer. She m. Joseph M. Cardoza/Cardosa, called "Joe." He was born about 1855-6 in Pico, the son of Joe M. Cardosa and Annie Roza. He was an Oak Bluffs fisherman in 1915. He had been previously married to (1st) _________. He was living in 1925. They had a son Louis Cardoza, who was an overseer in No. 3 Spinning Room, Sharp Mfg. Co., New Bedford, in 1924.
*12. Maquelina Jazus Medeiros, b. Dec. 1860 in San Miguel, Her obituary states that she came to Oak Bluffs as a "small child" although the 1900 census states that she immigrated to the US in 1877. She m. (1st) Joseph Pemintail (AKA Joseph Rogers AKA Joseph Metell (1)) of Cottage City on 26 Jun 1880 in Cottage City. She m. (2nd) John/Joseph Real (AKA John Sousa) ] on 15 Nov 1899 in Cottage City. He was b. May 1865 in the Azores, the son of Joseph S. Reil(?) and Mary _____. He immigrated in 1889, and is called a Cottage City laborer in 1899, and as "John Sousa" appears as a Cottage City day laborer in 1900. . He evidently died about 1917-20.
*13. Capitolina Encarnaco P. Medeiros, born Sept. 1861 in St. Michael , emigrated to the US in 1880, and was living in Cottage City by 1880. She d. May 19, 1922 in Oak Bluffs of uteran cancer. She was living on New York Ave., Oak Bluffs in 1922. She m. Henrique (Henry) Correira (Corey) (1) on 18 Sep 1880 in Cottage City. He was born in Fayal about 1858-9, the son of Jose Coreia and Nareiza/Narciza Rosa/Roza. He was listed as a Cottage City barber in 1880, and a Cottage City day laborer in 1900.
* 14. Domingo Pacheco Medeiros / Alley, b. c. 1864 in St. Michael.
* 15. Philomena P. Medeiros / Alley,
known as "Fannie," probably born about 1869 in St. Michael. She immigrated in 1875, was living in Cottage City in 1886 and 1900, and on Vineyard Ave., Oak Bluffs in 1922. She d. Feb. 12, 1922 in Oak Bluffs of myocarditis. She m. Antonio S. Duarte (AKA Sylvia/Silvia) (See Sylvia 260) of Cottage City on 5 Jun 1886 in Cottage City, the son of Antonio Duarte and Ignacia Joaquino. He was born about 1866-7 in Fayal, and immigrated in 1885. He is listed as a Cottage City laborer in 1886, and as a Cottage City day laborer in 1900.
* 16. Antone/Antonio Pacheco (de)Madeiros / Alley (AKA Antone Charamba),
born Dec. 7, 1871 in St. Michael.

 

14. Domingo Pacheco Medeiros/Alley He was born c. 1864 in St. Michael. He probably immigrated about 1878. He was a Cottage City laborer in 1886, 1888, and 1895, a Cottage City day laborer in 1900 and 1910, a Cottage City clerk in 1893, and a Cottage City Grocery Clerk in 1898. He evidently had his own grocery store sometime around the turn of the century. He was living on Green Meadow Place, Oak Bluffs, in 1907. He was listed as a grocery store clerk living on Vineyard Avenue in 1920. His obituary notes that he worked for twenty-five years for Capt. Otis Foss, then opened a market in Montgomery Square with his sons. He owned properties on Central Place and Vineyard Ave., Oak Bluffs at the time of his death. He was living on Pacific Ave., Oak Bluffs at the time of his death. He died of a heart attack in Oak Bluffs on May 10, 1922.
He m. Lena Knoff of Cottage City in May 1886 in Cottage City. She was born in July 1864 in Bausea(?) or Benecia, Germany, the daughter of William and Wilhelmina Noffz/Noffs. She immigrated in 1882 or 1886 (records vary.) She d. after 1922.
Children:

160. Antone H. Medeiros/Alley, b. 30 Oct. 1886 in Cottage City. He was one of the "Alley Bros." He was an Oak Bluffs clerk in 1907, and appeared in the 1910 Cottage City census as a Grocery Salesman, and on Vineyard Ave. Oak Bluffs in 1920 as a store merchant. He was living in Oak Bluffs in 1922, 1932, and 1946. He married Norann E. Duffy, called "Annie," on Oct. 2, 1907 in Oak Bluffs. She was born c. 1886-8 in Ireland. She immigrated in 1904 and was naturalized in 1907. Antone was chief of the Oak Bluffs Fire Dept. in 1933. (See A14 for children.)
161. George P. Medeiros/Alley, b. Sep. 30, 1888 in Cottage City. He was one of the "Alley Bros." He was in the grocery business since childhood, starting as an errand boy in his father's store. He then became a partner with his brother Antone and began the Alley Bros. Stores in three island towns. He was an Oak Bluffs clerk in 1908, appears in the 1910 Oak Bluffs census as a "retail grocery meat cutter," and in 1920 on Vineyard Ave. as a grocery store merchant. He was called a Tisbury grocer in 1915, and as living in Oak Bluffs in1922. He was living in New Bedford in 1932. He was in the meat and grocery business and managed his own stores in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. He later was employed as a meat cutter at the First National Store in Edgartown. He married (1st) Mary P. Monahan (dau. of Patrick J. Monaghan and Bridget Donahue/Dinahan of Ireland) on Nov. 23, 1908 in Oak Bluffs. She was born about Apr. 4, 1890 in Shenandoah, PA, and died on Mar. 20 1927 of accidental burns. He died 16 Aug 1946 in Oak Bluffs of an asthmatic attack. . (See A14 for children.)
161a. Agga L. Alley, b. Apr. 1891 in Cottage City.
She died 29 Jun 1892 in Cottage City of cholera infantum.
162. Domingo P. Alley, b. Oct. 2, 1893 in Cottage City. . He was an Oak Bluffs clerk in 1919. He was living in Oak Bluffs in 1920. He died May 14, 1919 in Oak Bluffs. He owned two lots at Naushon Park, Oak Bluffs, at the time of his death. He m. Nellie F. Reap who died June 1963 at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. She was b. c. 1885 in Avoca, PA. She moved to Martha's Vineyard about 1909. (See A14 for children.)
162a. Frank P. Medeiros/Alley, b. Dec. 7, 1895 in Cottage City.
He died of cerebral meningitis on Mar. 4, 1903 in Cottage City.
163. Manuel Pacheco Medeiros/Alley, b. Apr. 13, 1898 in Cottage City. He was living in Oak Bluffs in 1922, 1932, and 1946. (See A14 for children.)
164. Frank P. Medeiros, b. about 1904 in Mass.
He was living in Oak Bluffs in 1922, 1932, and 1946. He m. Eva Rose Marie Lavoie (dau. of Napolean Lavioe of Westport) on 26 Oct 1925.
165. Annie Marie P. Alley/Medeiros, b. Apr. 11, 1908 in Mass.
She was living in Oak Bluffs in 1922. . She m. Hollis West Fisher (100) of Edgartown before 1946.

 

16. Antone/Antonio Pacheco de Madeiros / Alley (AKA Antone Charamba) He was born in St. Michael on Dec. 7, 1871. He immigrated from St. Michael on the Schooner Veronica under the name "Antone Charamba", arriving in New Bedford on Aug. 18, 1881. He was listed as a Cottage City laborer in 1892, and a Cottage City "day laborer" in 1900. He moved to West Tisbury by 1906, and was called a "farmer and cranberry raiser" off State Road, West Tisbury, in 1907, and a West Tisbury "cranberry growing" farmer in 1910. His obituary explains that he bought Capt. Josiah Cleveland's cranberry bog and raised and sold cranberries for a time. He was listed as a Main St., West Tisbury farmer in 1920, and as living in West Tisbury in 1932. He was a West Tisbury "market gardener" in 1936. His obituary calls him a West Tisbury farmer.

A son of Joseph Silva runs away with a married woman, the wife of Joseph Perry, and Antoine Alley, a married man, takes the young daughter of Mr. Silvey. Both parties leave on Monday, three of them leaving from Vineyard Haven on the first boat in the morning and Antoine Alley from Cottage City on the 9 o'clock boat, meeting the others at Woods Hole. Before leaving Mr. Alley mortgaged his house here, so the story goes, for quite a sum of money with which it is suspected they will go to Honolulu. They have not been overtaken up to this time."

He m. Annie M. Enos about 1887-8. She was b. 26 Mar. 1870 in Boston. She was the daughter of Camillo Enos of Fayal and Charlotte M. Marshall of St. George. She d. 18 Apr. 1906 in Edgartown of uraemia.
Joseph was living as a widower in Pine Side Park, Edgartown in 1910. He died Feb. 3, 1913 in Edgartown of nephritis. He owned land in Edgartown at the time of his death. His death record calls him an Edgartown fisherman.

Bettencourt and Mary Isabel (and aunt to Frank and Anthony Rose of Taunton, Gilbert and Alfred Mello of E, and Frank Mello of South Dartmouth, 1972.) She immigrated in 1903. She was an Edgartown dressmaker in 1910. She died Oct. 21, 1972 at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. They had no children.

(He was probably the same as Jose de Medeiros Estrella who was sued in April 1897 by Mary Silvia under the "bastardy act".)

He was called an Edgartown laborer in September 1897, when he was naturalized. He may have been the "Jose S. DeMedeiros," born May 1872, who appears in the 1900 Edgartown census as a servant farmhand living with the Jophanus H. Smith family. He is called an Edgartown laborer in his 1900 marr record. He may have been the Joseph Soares Madeiros who bought land in Edgartown in 1905. He was probably the Joseph S. Medeiros who was living on the Great Plain, in Edgartown, in 1907. He was living in the Great Plains in Edgartown as a farm laborer in 1910. He was living on Planting Field Way, Edgartown, in 1920 when he was working as a farm laborer. His obituary calls him an Edgartown farmer, and noted that he worked at Pohogonet for several years. He died June 20, 1939 at Martha's Vineyard Hospital of myocarditis.
He married Lena C. Souza of Edgartown on 5 Sep 1900 in Edgartown.
She was born c. 1870-1 in St. Michael, and immigrated in 1894. She was called an Edgartown "domestic" at the time of their marriage. She was undoubtedly the same person as Lena (Cravalha) Madeiros of Edgartown, wife of Joseph Madeiras, who died on Jan. 30, 1931at Martha's Vineyard Hospital of colon cancer. According to this death record, she was born c. Nov. 1, 1868 in St. Michael, the dau. of Manuel Cravalha and Frances _____ of St. Michael.

He is called a Main Street, Tisbury barber in 1900. He was a Vineyard Haven barber and fisherman in 1907, and his barber shop was on Main street, on the corner of Centre Street, and his home on Franklin St., at the corner of Woodlawn Ave. The 1910 Tisbury census lists him as an odd jobs laborer living on Franklin St., Vineyard Haven. His death record calls him a barber. His family was listed on Franklin St. during 1917-1925. He died on 10 Feb 1918 in Tisbury of pancreatic cancer, and is buried in New Bedford.
He m. Elvira Amaral about 1892. She was b. Jan. 15, 1871 on St. Michael, the daughter of Joseph Amaral and Elvira _____. She immigrated about 1892 -5 , and was naturalized in 1904. She was living as a widower with three of her children on Franklin St., Vineyard Haven in 1920. She died Jan. 11, 1924 in Tisbury of heart disease and buried in New Bedford. He appears with his parents as an odd jobs laborer in 1910 in Tisbury, and as a house painter living with his widowed mother in 1920. He was a Tisbury chauffeur in 1921 and 1925 , and a Tisbury painter in 1922, 1927, 1929, and 1934. His obituary notes that he was a house painter "widely recognized as a craftsman of superior skill." He was living in Tisbury in 1924, on Daggett Ave., Vineyard Haven, in 1928 and 1929, on Franklin St. in 1930-33, and in Vineyard Haven in 1968. His obituary adds, "Through the family name Mr. Medeiros traced his lineage back to the Flemish settlers from Burgundy, first to come to the Azores after the discovery of the islands by the Admiral Cabral in 1497."

He was born c. 1884-5 in New Bedford, the son of Adrian Silvia and Isabella B. Machado. He was an Oak Bluffs laborer in 1910. They had a daughter Eleanor May Silvia, b. 1911 in Oak Bluffs who d. 1912 in Oak Bluffs.

1070. Mary Madeiras (sister of Manuel Madieras, Mrs. Isabel Sousa, and Miss Louisa Madieras all of New Bedford in 1929
), the daughter of Manuel Mederios and Mary Doglaria. She was born c. Nov. 1, 1892 in Fayal and came to US about 1919. She married Antone A. Andrews (1) of Vineyard Haven about 1919. She d. 12 July 1929 or 8 July 1929 in Taunton of tuberculosis. (See Andrews #1.) She had son Edward Andrews (1919-1919) in Tisbury and Manuel M. Andrews (1921-1946) Manuel M's obit states he was one of 20 children (including some half-siblings.)

He was born c. 1883-4 on St. Maria, Western Islands, the son of Joseph S. Figueiredo and Annie Jesus. He was a Tisbury laborer in 1911. They had son Joseph Swartz Figueriedo Jr., b. Nov. 5, 1911 in Tisbury, and another son Edward S. Figueredo, b. Jun 20, 1913 in Tisbury. Also .more children (See p. F272.)

1090. Manuel Madeiros, who was a servant farm laborer boarding with the family of Henry J. Cleveland on the Great Plains in Edgartown in 1910. He was born c. 1890-1 in "Portugal" and immigrated in 1905.
He appears in the 1907 directory of Edgartown as "Medeiros C. Manuel, bds. Henry Cleveland, Cleveland Town way."

1110. Mary Medaros, b. c. 1906-7. She appears as a "ward" of Frank S. and Mary Coreira in 1920.


1120. Rosa Clara Medeiros, b. Feb. 21, 1880 in Pico.
She emigrated from Pico to New York City on May 14, 1900 as "Rosa Clara." She was working in "domestic house work" and living unmarried on Wing Road, Oak Bluffs in 1940.
Could she be the same as Mrs. Rose Clara Madeiros of Oak Bluffs who was sister of Mary Clara Medeiros, wife of Joseph S. Machado (70)?

. She imm. to the US on Oct. 3, 1966. She was unmarried, childless, and living on Edgartown Road in Edgartown in 1972.
