View of the Bottom of the Old Spring St. Standpipe

Handwritten Notes: ""View of the bottom of the old Spring St. Standpipe (resevoir) in the town lot / closed opening at the top was the access entrance which was a couple of feet above the bottom. The light opening was on the bottom and was the discharge (not measured).."

... but a guess about 12 inches. Standpipe was toppled in 1938." [S.L., on back of photo] / "Stood on the DPW lot directly across the street from the back entrance driveway (North side) to the Tisbury School. It is now on its side at the back of the lot and serves as an equipment storage shed. When the old pumping station at Tashmoo (coal fired steam engine pump) was in operation, a man would ride horseback at intervals from there to the standpipe to check on the water level. It often overflowed and freeze solid curb to curb. In the near level part, between Look Street and Franklin Street, is was often good ice skating." [W.R. 1999]
