1. RICHARD AREY, the ancestor of this family, has been considered fully in Vol. II, Annals of E., pp. 36-8, and further reference to him is not necessary here. He left two sons presumably the issue by his wife ELIZABETH, viz:

10. RICHARD, b. (1640).
11. JOHN, b. (1645). Signed a petition to Mass. 1673. He d. 12 Oct. 1675, intestate and his brother Richard was app. adm. as heir at law. (Deeds 1, 301).

 

 

10. RICHARD AREY, (Richard1), b. abt. 1640; res. E.; m. SARAH MARCHANT (8) abt. 1677. He was Juror 1677, 1679; constable 1678; townsman 1679, 1680. Prop. and agt. 1687-8, and d. 14 Feb. 1688-9. After his death the wid. m. THOMAS HARLOCK (10) 16 Nov. 1696.

16. JEAN, b. (1679); m. BENJAMIN PEASE (68) 17 June 1697.
17. RICHARD, b. 3 July 1682.
18. SARAH, b. 1684; m. NATHAN LEWIS 24 Aug. 1705.

15. JOHN AREY, (Richard2-l), b. 3 Oct. 1677. It is not known to the author where he resided after the death of his father, but it is prob. that he was cared for by his mother's people at Yarmouth, Mass. He came to E. abt. 1698 and in May 1699, being accused of selling rum without license he pleaded that he was "a stranger and newly come to dwell within said county." He rem. to Salem in 1700 and was living the following year, but the date of his death is not of record, although he was deceased before 1724. He m. SARAH _____.

20. OLIVER alias JOHN. He res. Boston and moved to E. abt. 1723; later rem. (after 1726) to the mainland, the exact location unknown. He was a blacksmith by occupation; perh. m. ELIZABETH GOULD of Harwich 9 Mch. 1737-8; see No. 51.
21. JOSEPH. He was res. of Braintree 1724 and of E. 1726 but nothing further is known of him. He was a cordwainer.

 

 

17. RICHARD AREY, (Richard,2-1), b. 3 July 1682; res. E., cordwainer; rem. to Truro, Mass. bef. 1717. He m. LYDIA NORTON (53) 6 Dec. 1705, who was b. abt. 1685 and d. 2 Mch. 1726-27. He was living in Truro in 1736.

51. OLIVER, b. 15 Sept. 1717; perh. m. ELIZABETH GOULD 9 Mch. 1738. (See No. 20). He d. 30 Mch. 1760 at Orleans, Mass.

35. THOMAS AREY,(Richard,3-2-l), b. 12 May 1716; res. at Truro, Mass. rem. to E. abt. 1740, master mariner. He m. BEULAH TRAPP (41) 4 Sept. 1740, who was b. 1718 and d. Oct. 1779. He d. June 1787. He was one of the first settlers as well as one of the largest proprietors of Chappaquiddick.
