Vineyard, principally in T., the first of whom, BENJAMIN BURGESS
(Jacob,2 Thomas1), b. 1682 m. DORCAS SMITH (334) 15 May 1712, by
whom he had the following named children:
30. BENJAMIN, b. 19 Jan. 1712-13; m. ABIGAIL PEASE (221) 25 Feb. 1740; d. 10 Feb. 1752. She d. 2 Oct. 1798. Their son, Dr. Benjamin, who m. SUSAN MANTER (74) 12 Nov. 1772 was the grandfather of Hon. Henry L. Dawes, U. S. Senator from Mass. whose father, Mitchel Dawes m. Mercy Burgess.
31. THOMAS, b. 15 Nov. 1715; d. in 1757 in the French and Indian War.
32. SHUBAEL, b. 13 July 1718; m. MERCY PEASE (223) and d. 11 Oct. 1798.
33. ABIGAIL, b. 22 Aug. 1720; m. (1) JOHN PEASE (222) 24 May 1739; (2) SAMUEL NICKERSON. She d. 10 Feb. 1802. The above family resided in C.
ROBERT BURGESS, son of Joseph and Desire (Luce) (16) of Harwich, b. 6 Jan. 1726 in that town, came to T. sometime bef. 1750 where he m. RUTH WEEKS (112) 30 Oct. 1748. He rem. to Vassalboro, Me. where he d. in 1793. They had the following named children:

41. MARY, b. (1753); m. ROBERT LUCE, JR. (393) 3 Aug. 1783.
42. SARAH, b. (1756) m. ALSBURY LUCE (720) 25 Oct. 1789.
43. JONATHAN, bapt. May 1761; m. MERIBEH TILTON 27 Jan. 1785.
44. DAVID, bapt. July 1763; d. 1781 in France.
45. AVERY, bapt. Nov. 1765; m. BETSEY JACKSON.
46. LEWIS, bapt. May 1768; d. 1779.
47. NANCY, bapt. Apr. 1771; m. THOMAS LOVEJOY.
48. ELIJAH, bapt. Oct. 1773; m. MARY WEST (258).
49. RHODA, b. (1776); m. DAVID JACKSON.
LUCE BURGESS, brother of the above named Robert, bapt. 2 Feb. 1728,
also came to the Vineyard and was a member of the Military Co. in E. 1757.
He had m. LYDIA LUCE (122) of T. 3 Aug. 1752, and he d. there 31 Dec. 1791.
He left no descendants as far as known.
JOHN BURGESS of Rochester, Mass. m. ABIGAIL CHASE (160) and they were the parents of TRISTRAM BURGESS, b. 26 Feb. 1770; member of Congress and Chief Justice of R. I.
