The History of Martha's Vineyard by Dr. Charles Banks:
Volume III Family Genealogies:  pp. 284 - 290

THE MANTER FAMILY

1. JOHN MANTER, the ancestor of all of the name on the Vineyard and prob. in the United States, has been given a complete biographical sketch in Vol. II, Annals of W.T., pp. 56-8 and nothing has since been found to be added thereto.

This well-known Vineyard family name does not occur in any English records known to the author in the form used here, but Munter, and Mynter and Maunder were in use in England in the 17th century and the last, frequently found in Devonshire, is prob. identical with our Vineyard name as then pronounced. (Walter Mander, mariner, resided in Boston as early as 1689 and d. abt. 1700. He m. Patience Darling, or Dollen, of Monhegan, Me. His wid. became a resident of the Vineyard, but there is no known connection between this transient wid. of Walter Mander and the Manter family of Tisbury. There was also a James Mander of Boston, prob. related to Walter.)

notes, "I believe there is an error in Banks listing of the Manter family. In the family of Benjamin (15) and Mary Whitten (22) Manter there are two Georges. This sort of thing happens when a child dies and a later child is given the same name, but in this case the older George is still alive when the second George is reported to have been born. I checked the published Vital records of Tisbury and found a John Manter son of Benjamin and Mary born on March 8, 1709, the date Banks reports for the birth of the second George. Looks like Dr. Banks slipped up this time.]
