Joseph's father Alexander Newcomb was the (illegitimate?) son of Sarah Newcomb of Tisbury.

Joseph's mother, Parnell Manter, was the daughter of Jonathan Manter and Sarah Chase of Tisbury, and was named after her famous sister Parnell Newcomb, who died the year before she was born. (See The Chase Family of Martha's Vineyard for more information about her family.)
