Three distinct families of this name res. in T. prior to 1800; two of them nearly related from the Grays' of Cape Cod and the third an immigrant of recent arrival.

20. SAMUEL GRAY, prob. son of Edward and Malatiah of Harwich, now Brewster, b. 1700, came to T. abt. 1730 and is called laborer and husbandman at various times. He was of the Mil. Co. in 1757 and d. 9 Oct. 1768. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.] His will 4 Oct. 1768 was pro. 21 Dec. 1768. He m. RUTH ALLEN (80) 3 Sept. 1731 who was b. 16 June 1711 and d. 23 Jan. 1804 at Rochester, Mass.[She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]

30. MERCY, b. (1734); m. (1) THOMAS SEARS 28 Nov. 1754; (2) _____ WHITE.
31. PATIENCE, b. 1737; m. RICHARD GRAY (90) 24 Feb. 1757. [She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]
32. ISAIAH, b. 1740.
33. BATHSHEBA, b. (1743); m. DANIEL DUNHAM (182) 12 Mch. 1767.
34. PRISCILLA, b. (1746); m. DAVID HASKELL of Rochester 23 Jan. 1772.
35. THANKFUL, b. (1750); m. MOSES BAKER 20 July 1769.

 

32. ISAIAH GRAY, (Samuel), b. 1740; res. T., yeoman. He m. MARY ATHEARN (61) 7 Feb. 1769, who was b. 14 May 1741 and d. 28 Feb. 1808. He d. 17 Feb. 1790 and his will 31 Mch. 1788 was pro. 20 June 1790. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]

41. CATHERINE, b. 1771; m. JOSEPH ALLEN (246) 1 Jan. 1795.
42. THANKFUL, b. (1772); m. VERNAL CLIFFORD (56) 23 Sept. 1802.

40. ABIJAH GRAY, (Isaiah2, Samuel1), b. 29 Mch. 1769; res. T., rem. to Evans, N. Y. 1821, where he d. Oct. 1846. He m. (1) DOROTHY FOSTER (81) 16 Sept. 1792, who was b. 4 Aug. 1775 and d. 13 Feb. 1834; (2) REBECCA FOSTER (87) 15 Apr. 1835. She was youngest sister of his first wife.

50. ISAIAH, b. 29 Apr. 1793; m. MARY MORGAN.
51. MARY, b. 7 Mch. 1795; m. SAUNDERS DUNHAM (473) 12 July 1821. [She d. 11 Dec. 1874.]
52. CATHERINE, b. 16 Feb. 1797; m. HIRAM CORBIN.
53. NANCY, b. 5 Mch. 1799; m. GEORGE COOK.
54. REBECCA, b. 5 Mch. 1799; d. 1823 unm.
55. JOSEPH FOSTER, b. 11 Apr. 1801; d. 1831 unm.
56. HARRISON, b. 19 Apr. 1803; m. SILVIA JOHNSON. [He d. 11 July 1852.]
57. HARRIET, b. 10 Nov. 1804; m. JOB SHAW.
58. FRANKLIN, b. 20 Nov. 1806; m. THANKFUL D. LUCE 15 Oct. 1831. [He m. (2) Eunice Rotch Chase. He died 19 Nov. 1870 in North Tisbury.]

43. FREEMAN GRAY, (Isaiah2 Samuel1), bapt. 9 July 1775; res. T. He m. ELIZABETH NICHOLS (3) 11 Oct. 1798, who was b. abt. 1777. He d. 7 Dec. 1834 and his will 10 July 1834 was pro 19 Jan. 1835.

70. ELIZA, b. 8 Feb. 1800; m. WILLIAM FERGUSON (52). [She d. 10 Sep. 1854 in Woods Hole.]
71. FOSTINA, b. 22 Aug. 1808; m. JOHN BAXTER.
72. WILLIAM NICHOLS, b. Feb. 1811. [He m. Fiann _____.]
73. EMILLA, b. 1817; d.15 May 1844.

 


90. RICHARD GRAY, perhaps son of John and Hannah of Harwich, came to T. abt. 1757 where he m. his cousin PATIENCE GRAY (31) 24 Feb. 1757, who was b. 1737 and d. 28 Sept. 1768. He d. 10 Sept. 1771 aged abt. 36 yrs. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]

102. OLIVER, b. 1 Feb. 1762; d. 12 Mch. 1777. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]
103. LYDIA, bapt. 24 Oct. 1764; m. JACOB CLIFFORD (55) 26 Nov. 1780.
104. HANNAH, bapt. 11 Dec. 1766; m. JOHN MAYHEW (335) 15 Jan. 1783.

 

101. JOHN GRAY, (Richard), b. (1760); res. T. tailor. He m. MARY TILTON (111) 17 Feb. 1789, who was b. 1756 and d. 6 July 1816. [She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.] He was deacon of the church for many years and d. 23 Jan. 1834. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.] They had issue as follows:—

110. PATIENCE, b. 1790; d. 1816. [She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]
111. TEMPERANCE, b. (1792) m. WILLIAM CHASE (277) 26 Sept. 1821. [She d. 15 May 1873 in Tisbury.]
112. PRUDENCE, b. 1794; d. 1817. [She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]

 


120. LUKE GRAY, a native of Waterford, Ireland, b. 1748, came to E. abt. 1775, where he secured employment as school teacher. He m. RHODA CLEVELAND (55), who was b. 25 July 1752 and d. 14 Aug. 1830. He d. 8 Aug. 1794 at South Amboy, N. J. He served in the Sea Coast Defence as Private in 1776.
