Part Four:
Descendants of Jeruel West Jr.

This is taken from a manuscript I am working on titled The Descendants of Capt. Jeruel West and Deborah Shaw of Frog Alley, Tisbury. If you have any additions, corrections, or suggestions, please email me!

400. JERUEL WEST was born on 11 Apr 1780 in Tisbury, the son of Capt. Jeruel West and Deborah Shaw. He married BELINDA LAMBERT, daughter of MOSES LAMBERT and SARAH HAYDEN, on 7 Dec 1803 in Chilmark. He died after the census of 1820 was taken but apparently before the sale of his father's land in 28 Aug 1830. No death record has been found.

Jeruel seems to be listed with his father in the 1800 Tisbury census, and he appeared on the Tisbury census of 1810 with his wife, two daughters, and a son, adjacent to his mother Deborah West. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1820 with his wife, two daughters, and two sons.

I have not learned his occupation, although it is a safe bet that he was a mariner. His eldest daughter was reportedly born in 1807 in Nantucket, although I have found no records of this family recorded in the vital records on that island.

Belinda Lambert was probably born on 29 Dec 1779 in Chilmark. She appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1810 and 1820 with her husband; as a widow on the Chilmark census of 1830 with children Harriet, Edward, and George; on the Tisbury census of 1840 with her son Edward and adjacent to her daughter Laura Hatch; on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 70, with her daughter Harriet's family; and on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 76, living with her daughter Laura's family. I was unable to find her in the 1860 census. She died on 19 Feb 1861 on the "North Shore" in Tisbury, aged 81, of "reumatick fever."

JERUEL WEST and BELINDA LAMBERT had four children, although there appears to be a church death record for another child of Jeruel West on 14 May 1816.

401. LAURA ANN WEST was born on 16 Sep 1807, probably in Nantucket. She married JAMES WARD HATCH.

402. EDWARD S. WEST was born about 1808-9 in Holmes Hole. He married MARY FLEURY.

403. HARRIET BELINDA WEST was born on 14 Jun 1812 in Tisbury. She married JOHN TOBEY DAGGETT.

GEORGE WEST "3d" was born about 1813-4 in Tisbury. He was killed by a whale while in October 1839.

George was listed as a child in his father's 1820 Tisbury census, and with his widowed mother Betsey West in 1830 in Chilmark. He was probably the "George West" of Tisbury who was described in several crew lists as being 5" 2¼" tall with light hair and a light complexion. He sailed on the Bark Octavia of New Bedford from 10 Jul 1830 to 5 Jul 1831, on the Ship Hydaspe of New Bedford from 12 Jun 1832 to 14 Apr 1833, and on the Ship Java of New Bedford from 24 Jun 1833 to 12 Mar 1834. He was listed among the heirs of Jeruel who sold the Frog Alley property of his grandfather to cousin James West on 28 Aug 1830. George appears in the 1838 Tisbury tax list (adjacent to his brother Edward), but he does not appear in the 1840 census of Tisbury.

On 11 Apr 1840 Dr. Leroy Yale wrote in his journal, "Today the Ship Pocahontas arrived reporting 1400 bbls oil after an absence of 22 months. Lost her first officer last October who was killed by a whale, Mr. Geo. West - he was much esteemed here & his loss was greatly lamented." The Ship Pocahontas of Holmes Hole had sailed on 16 June 1838 under Capt. Dillingham for whaling grounds in the Indian Ocean. (This voyage, incidentally, followed a much shorter sailing of the Pocahontas under his cousin, Capt. Abner West, which ended in mutiny.)

George's probate papers call him a Tisbury mariner. He died intestate, owning half of a dwelling house and lot, which the 1838 Tisbury tax list suggests may have been shared with his brother Edward. This house was sold to James W. Hatch for $325 on 10 Oct 1842. There is mention of a "widow" in one place in his probate, but no widow is listed as a next-of-kin nor in any other context anywhere else in his probate papers. I suspect that this "widow" was just a clerk's error.

401. LAURA ANN WEST (Jeruel1) was born on 16 Sep 1807, probably in Nantucket. She married JAMES WARD HATCH, son of WARD HATCH and ANNA _____, on 1 Oct 1826 in Tisbury. She died on 15 Dec 1884 in Tisbury, aged 77, of apoplexy.

Laura was listed as a child on her father's Tisbury census entries in 1810 and 1820. She and her husband were listed among the heirs of Jeruel West in the sale of his Frog Alley estate to James West on 28 Aug 1830. She was listed on the 1840 Tisbury census entry of her husband; on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 42, with her husband and children; on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 49, with her husband, her children, and her mother; on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 51, with her husband and children; and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 62, "keeping house," with her children and a servant. (Her real estate was valued in this census at $350.) On 27 Dec 1871 in Tisbury, Laura, her son James, her daughter Hattie, and her deceased daughter Caroline's widower Edward Dillingham sold what was probably the old Jeruel West homestead on the southeast of the "Frog Pond" in Frog Alley for $1 to her son George W. Hatch. She appeared on the Tisbury census of June 1880, aged 73, widow, "keeping house," with "boarder" (actually her daughter) Harriet Legg and her family. Her estate was valued upon her death at $345.

James Ward Hatch was born on 6 Jul 1807 in Falmouth, MA, and was a Falmouth resident at the time of his marriage in 1826. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1840 with his wife and family, and appeared on the 1842 Tisbury tax list. In October 1842 he bought a lot in Frog Alley from the estate of Laura's brother George West "3d" for $325. (After the debts of the estate were paid off, the proceeds were divided equally among George's four heirs - including James Hatch.) Although I haven't finished tracking the deeds of the Hatch family at Frog Alley, James' daughter Harriet's will mentions the "Hatch homestead" which she owned a half interest, and which was willed to her son Louis, who was known to have lived on Hatch Road during this period. It seems apparent that the road running along the hill in Frog Alley - long known as the "Proprietor's Road" - was named "Hatch Road" after James Ward Hatch and his descendants.

James Ward Hatch was called a Tisbury shoemaker on his daughter Harriet's 1844 birth record, and again on his unnamed youngest daughter's 1847 birth record. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850 as a cordwainer, and on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 49, shoemaker, with his wife and children. He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860 , aged 52, shoemaker, with his wife and children, next door to his married children Caroline Dillingham and James Hatch. (This census valued his real estate at $550, and his personal estate at $200.)

James Ward Hatch died about 2 June 1861 in Holmes Hole, aged 53, of "Delerium Tremens." The Gazette reported that "Mr. James W. Hatch, of Holmes Hole, was found dead on Sunday last in his shop. The Coroner, (Mr. John Holmes. Jr.), made an examination, and found that the deceased came to his death through intemperance." He was called a Holmes Hole cordwainer in his death record.

Children of LAURA ANN WEST and JAMES WARD HATCH were as follows:

404. CAROLINE P. HATCH was born 7 Jun 1828 in Tisbury. She married CAPT. EDWARD DILLINGHAM.

405. JAMES WARD HATCH was born 6 Aug 1832 in Holmes Hole. He married SOPHRONIA JANE WILSON.

GEORGE W. HATCH was born on 14 Nov 1834 in Tisbury. He died on 26 Dec 1877 in Tisbury, aged 43, of Brights Disease.

He was listed in the Tisbury census of 1840 in his father's household, and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 15, mariner, with his parents. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 19, mariner, with his parents, and on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 26, mariner, with his parents. The September 1862 Gazette draft list for Tisbury described him as "at sea." He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 30 (sic.), mariner, with his mother and sister. On 27 Dec 1871 he bought a lot on the southeast of the "Frog Pond" in Frog Alley for $1 from his mother, brother, and sister. He was called a resident of Tisbury about 1875. His 1877 death record called him an unmarried Tisbury mariner.

406. WILLIAM F. HATCH was born 4 Dec 1837 in Tisbury. He married MARGARET (--?--).

CORDELIA D. HATCH was born about 1842-3 in Tisbury. She died on 17 Feb 1847 in Tisbury, aged four, of croup. (Could this Cordelia and the first Harriet (below) been the same person? The only mention of Cordelia I have is her death record.)

HARRIET HATCH was born on 28 Jul 1842 in Tisbury. She died before November 1844. (Could she have been the unnamed daughter of James and Laura who died on 26 Mar 1848 of "dropsy on brain"? Was this Harriet or simply a duplicate record? Another record exists of an unnamed daughter who died on 11 Mar 1848 of "dropsy of brain." In any event, there is only the second Harriet living in the 1850 census.)

407. HARRIET ANN HATCH was born 27 Nov 1844 in Tisbury. She married LEWIS A. LEGG.

(DAUGHTER) HATCH was born on 11 May 1847 in Tisbury. She died on 11 Mar 1848 in Tisbury of "dropsy of brain."

402. EDWARD S. WEST was born about 1808-9, probably in Holmes Hole. He married MARY FLEURY on 27 Jan 1840 in Tisbury. He died on 7 Jun 1854 in Holmes Hole of pneumonia.

Edward is listed in the 1810 and 1820 Tisbury censuses of his father Jeruel, and in the Chilmark 1830 census entry of his widowed mother, Betsey. He is listed among the heirs of grandfather Jeruel West who sold his Frog Alley property to cousin James West on 28 Aug 1830.

Edward was described on the 1832 crew list of the Ship Milton as being 5' 5" tall, with light complexion and hair. The Milton left New Bedford on 27 Apr 1832 and returned 24 Jul 1835.

He was listed on the 1838 Tisbury tax list adjacent to his brother George. (George died in 1840, and his estate included half-ownership of a dwelling house and lot, suggesting that George and Edward may have shared this home.) Edward was probably the man aged 30-39 appearing on the 1840 Tisbury census of his widowed mother. He sworn in as a Tisbury field driver in April 1841, April 1845, and in March 1852. He appeared as a homeowner on the 1842 Tisbury tax list. In February 1843, Edward S. West, Tisbury mariner, bought "Lot #5" (now lots H5.11 and H5.1) from Thomas Bradley. This lot stretched between Hatch Road and Main Street, and remained in his family until 1883 when William Randall bought it.

Edward was called a Tisbury mariner on his unnamed daughter's 1844 birth record, a Tisbury "labourer" on his next daughter's 1847 birth record, and again as a Tisbury mariner on his daughter Mary's 1849 birth record. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged "37", mariner, with his wife and children. He was called a Tisbury mariner on his youngest son's 1852 birth record, and in his own 1854 death record. He died intestate, and his inventory included a house and lot valued at $115 and furniture valued at $20.

Mary Fleury (or "Fleura")was probably born about 1820 in Richmond, VA. Dr. Yale mentions treating Mrs. Edward West in his journal in an entry dated 6 April 1841, near the end of her first pregnancy: "Mrs. Edwd West. Pregnant 8 mos. with her first child - Aet. 20. 4 or 5 days ago began to be troubled with oedeama in the pudendum - it had existed for some time in the legs - otherwise well - now pudenda very much swelld + some [?] modining [??] much inconveniences + pain in motion - can't sit. ... obstruction in passing water + some exconation from it on the pudenda - her urine has been some obstructed for some time + small in quantity." She was called a Tisbury resident on her unnamed daughter's 1847 birth record, and appeared on the census of 1850 in Tisbury, aged "29."

Following her husband Edward's death in 1854, she appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 34, with her children Silas and Martha, who were both marked "pauper." Between 1855 and 1865 some of her children appear to have been placed with other families in Tisbury and Rochester. On 9 May 1856 she gave birth to an illegitimate baby boy, and subsequently sued twenty-year-old John Lewis Jr. in Dukes County Superior Court, claiming that he was the father of the child. The Gazette reported, "This was a complaint made to recover the support of a child which the respondent was charged with being the putative father. The complainant is a widow of about thirty years of age, while the respondent is said to be a minor. Both parties reside at Holmes Hole. The Court held that the declaration of the complainant, although made to the attending physician within one hour of the birth, and some considerable time after he had been called, was not made during the time of trevail, within the meaning of the statute. The Order of the Court therefore was that the complainant be non-suited and the respondent discharged. [Our reporter has furnished a full report of this case, but we do not deem it proper to give it a place in the Gazette.]"

She does not appear in the 1860 census of Tisbury, but was called a Tisbury resident in December 1862, when she bore a second illegitimate child. She appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 41, widow, "pauper," with her children Edgar and Amelia. She did not appear in the 1870 Tisbury census, but did appear on the 1880 census of Tisbury, aged 58, "keeping house," with her daughter Amelia. In March 1883 she sold her Hatch Road home ("Lot #5") to Daniel W. Stevens for $100. She died on 17 Oct 1894 in Tisbury of "Brain Disease and Asthemia" and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Children of EDWARD S. WEST and MARY FLEURY were as follows:

DEBORAH I. WEST was born on 14 Apr 1841 in Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged nine, with her parents. She was probably the "Deborah West," aged 14, living with Presbury and Lucretia Luce in the Tisbury census of 1855. (Her mother is listed elsewhere in town.) Neither Deborah (nor Presbury or Lucretia Luce) turn up in the 1860 Tisbury census, (although Presbury Luce died in 1861 in Tisbury), nor does Deborah appear with her mother in the 1865 census, nor does Deborah appear in the 1870 Tisbury census. She married _____ DENNISON before September 1869, when she was living in East Boston. By May 1874 she was living in Hyde Park, Norfolk Co., MA. I have no further record of her.

SILAS WEST was born on 17 Dec 1842 in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged seven, on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 13, "pauper," and on the 1860 census of Holmes Hole, aged 18, "pauper" (no occupation listed), living with the family of Charles and Love Butler. I have no record of him after 1860. He is not listed in the 1865, 1870, or 1880 Tisbury censuses. He does not appear in the land transactions of his mother and sister in 1869 and 1874, suggesting that he may have died before 1869.

(DAUGHTER) WEST was born on 11 Sep 1844 in Tisbury. Her death in Tisbury on 12 Mar 1845 was "caused by deformity."

(DAUGHTER) WEST was born on 7 Apr 1847 in Tisbury. She probably died before the 1850 census was taken, although no death record has been found.

MARY C. S. WEST was born on 8 Sep 1849 in Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged eight months. Although she does not appear with her mother in the 1855 census (nor in the 1860, 1865, or 1870 Tisbury censuses), she was likely the "Mary C. S. West", aged ten, living with the family of Seth and Rhoda Cowen in the Rochester, MA census of 1860, and was also likely the "Mary S. West," aged 15, living with Seth and Rhoda Cowing in the Rochester census of 1865. She married _____ BUCKETT (or BURKETT) before September 1869, when she was living in East Boston. By 1874 she was living in Hyde Park, Norfolk Co., MA. I have no record of her after 1874.

408. MARTHA E. WEST was born in 1852 in Tisbury. She married (and later divorced) CALEB HILLER NORTON.

(SON) WEST was born on 20 Aug 1852 in Tisbury. He does not appear with his mother in the 1855 or 1865 Tisbury censuses, nor in the land transactions involving his sisters and mother in 1869 and 1874.

John Lewis Jr., father to at least one of Mary's illegitimate children, was born in July 1835 in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 18, mariner, living with his parents. In April 1856 a son was born to widow Mary F. West and she sued twenty-year-old John Lewis, stating that he was the father of baby Edgar. He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 26, mariner, with his parents.

On 6 Aug 1863 he married Louisa N. Luce, daughter of Edmund Luce and Tamson (--?--),in Tisbury, and was called a Tisbury laborer in the marriage record. He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 30, laborer, with Louisa and his son William. This census also noted that John could not read or write. He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1870, aged 35, laborer, with his wife and four children, and on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 45, laborer, with his wife and son. He died on 15 Nov 1893 at age 58.

Children of MARY FLEURY and JOHN LEWIS JR. were:

EDGAR L. WEST was born (illegitimately) on 9 Apr 1856 in Tisbury. He was probably the "Edgar West" who died on 14 Dec 1893 in West Tisbury, aged 37, of Brights disease. The death record called him an unmarried "Idiotic Pauper." He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged four, living with Sarah S. Clark and five others (including Mary E. Lewis, aged 7.) He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged nine, "pauper," living with his mother and sister. I could not find him in the 1870 or 1880 censuses.

MARY FLEURY also had a second illegitimate child whose father I have not been able to discover:

AMELIA F. WEST was born on 25 Dec 1862 in Tisbury. She died on 4 Oct 1920 at "M. S. F. M.", Waltham, MA, aged 57, of a "congenital mental defect," and is buried at Mt. Feake in Waltham. She appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged two, with her mother and brother. She does not appear in the 1870 Tisbury census, but she did appear in the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 18, living with her mother. Her 1920 death record states that she was unmarried and unemployed at the time of her death.

Note that Edgar and Amelia West are not blood descendants of Jeruel and Deborah West, but they did inherit their West name!

403. HARRIET BELINDA WEST (Jeruel1) was probably born on 14 Jun 1812 in Tisbury. She married JOHN TOBEY DAGGETT, son of SAMUEL DAGGETT and REBECCA DAGGETT, on 26 May 1833 in Holmes Hole. She died on 16 Dec 1886 in North Tisbury, aged 74 of "General Debility." She is buried at 74 Cedar, Oak Grove Cemetery.

Although she undoubtedly grew up in Tisbury, after her father's death in the 1820's she evidently moved to Chilmark before 1830 with her widowed mother, Belinda. Grandson John Daggett claimed that "Grandmother, by the way, was a West from Chilmark and lived, I understand, in the old so-called Great House on the right side of the road going toward Gay Head and not far from Beetle Bung corner." On 28 Aug 1830, "Harriot B. West" was listed among the heirs of Jeruel West (as well as a witness) who sold the Frog Alley property of her grandfather to cousin James West. She was listed in the Tisbury census of 1840 with her husband; on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 35, with her husband, children, and mother; on the census of 1855 in (West?) Tisbury, aged 41, with her husband and children; again on the 1860 census of West Tisbury, aged 45; on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 52, "housewife," with her husband and children; and again on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 57, "keeping house," with her husband and children. John Daggett suggests that Harriet was taken care of by her son Obed Dagget after John Daggett Sr.'s death in 1876. She resided between 1878 and 1884 at Cedar Tree Neck in West Tisbury, and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 67, widow, "keeping house," with her children.

John Tobey Daggett was probably born on 29 Sep 1807 in New Vineyard, ME. His grandson John Daggett 3rd wrote that "His father moved his family to Holmes Hole (now Vineyard Haven.) John spent the greater part of his life engaged in whaling. On May 26, 1833, he married Belinda B. West of Chilmark, and they made their residence in Holmes Hole on the northwest corner of Main and Wharf Streets. In the year 1845 or 1846 there was a serious fire that burned their home, and possibly others, on Main Street. This meant a relocation of one or more families." [See It Began With a Whale for his full biography.]

He sailed on the ship Columbus of New Bedford from 19 Jul 1823 to 14 May 1824, the ship Corn Rodgers of New Bedford from 19 Jun 1825 to 24 Jul 1825, the brig Elizabeth of New Bedford from 26 Aug 1826 to 6 Aug 1827, the brig Dwight of New Bedford from 1 Oct 1827 to 8 May 1829, the George and Martha of New Bedford from 18 Jul 1829 to 9 Jun 1830, and the ship Minerva Symth of New Bedford from 25 May 1830 to 22 Apr 1833. He may also have been the "John T. Daggett" who served as mate on the ship Oregon of Fairhaven from 10 Jul 1841 to 31 Mar 1845. Crew lists describe him as being about 5' 5½" tall with a dark complexion and brown hair. He was called a Tisbury mariner on the birth records of his children between 1834 and 1855.

His land was described as being on the south side of Union street in Holmes Hole, adjacent to the west of Silas West's "1785 House" between 1838 and about 1842. He appeared on the census of 1840 in Tisbury, with his wife, two daughters, and two men (one of them probably his father.)

Grandson John 3rd noted that "About the time of the fire, perhaps in 1845, Grandfather decided to give up the sea. These long voyages were a real hardship to all members of the family, as they were together for only a few months every three or four years. Much could happen during such long separations. Perhaps his decision to give up the sea may have been one of the reasons he purchased the Cedar Tree Neck property for farming. ... After a year or two of farming apparently he came to the conclusion that he was not sufficiently trained as a farmer, so he went whaling again…." This Cedar Tree Neck home remained in the family for four generations, finally being sold to Carly Simon in the 1980's.

He was described as a Tisbury "yeoman" on his daughter Mary's 1847 birth record, and again on his son Obed's 1850 birth record. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 42, mariner, with his wife, children, and mother-in-law Belinda West. He was called a Tisbury mariner on his son Samuel's 1852 birth record. He appeared on the census of 1855 in (West?) Tisbury, aged 44, farmer, with his wife and children. He was called a Tisbury farmer on his daughter Lucy's 1855 birth record. He appeared on the census of 1860 in West Tisbury, mariner, aged 59, with his wife and children. (His real estate was valued at $2000 in this census.) He appeared on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 56, farmer, with his wife and children.

It Began with a Whale states that John Daggett and his son, John Tobey Daggett Jr. "sailed on the whaling ship Niger from New Bedford for the North Pacific via Cape Horn. [John Sr.] was the forth officer and [John Jr.] the harpooner. ...On this particular voyage, presumably somewhere in the Pacific, a whale was sighted on March 10, 1868, and both father and son were assigned to a whaleboat with four other men to capture the whale. As frequently happened, the whale became angry and attacked the small boat. All were thrown into the water, and [John Jr.], realizing that his father would be more susceptible to the cold water, swam to his assistance. Whether through injury from the whale or through other causes, [John Jr.] was drowned, but [John Sr.] was saved, and returned on the Niger on June 2, 1870... [John Sr.] continued the very hazardous occupation of whaling [and] rose in the ranks; he was to be captain of a new ship, but he passed away in 1876 before assuming his first command."

John Daggett appeared on the census of 1870 in Holmes Hole, aged 63, mariner, with his wife and children. (His real estate was valued in this census at $1200, and his personal estate at $500.) He left a will on 4 Mar 1876 in which he bequeathed all of his land to his sons Obed and Samuel ("For this they are to take good care of their father and mother") and $10 each to daughters Abby B. Daggett and Lucy Burt and grandson Franklin Wilcox. He died on 23 Mar 1876 in Tisbury, aged 68, of "Dropsey," and was called a Tisbury mariner in his death record. He was buried at 74 Cedar, Oak Grove Cemetery. His probate records valued his real estate at $1375, and his personal estate at $105.

Children of HARRIET BELINDA WEST and JOHN TOBEY DAGGETT were as follows:

MARY MERRY DAGGETT was born on 9 May 1834 in Holmes Hole. She appeared as a female aged 5-9 listed with her father John Daggett on the Tisbury census of 1840, but died in April 1841 in Tisbury, aged six, and was buried in Village Cemetery.

409. BELINDA WEST DAGGETT was born 9 Dec 1838 in Holmes Hole. She married ALLEN B. WILCOX.

JOHN TOBEY DAGGETT JR. was born on 3 Jun 1841 in Holmes Hole. He died on 10 Mar 1868, and his gravestone on Cedar Ave. in Oak Grove notes that he was "Lost at Sea."

He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged eight, with his parents, and again on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 13. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1860 as a mariner, and was probably the "John T. Daggett" whom Banks credits as having served in the Navy during the Civil War. The Gazette Tisbury "draft list" of September 1862 noted him as a Tisbury resident, and he appeared on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 23, seaman, living with his parents.

According to the book It Began with a Whale (and the crew list of the Niger), on May 1866 John Jr. and his father "sailed on the whaling ship Niger from New Bedford for the North Pacific via Cape Horn. [John Sr.] was the forth officer and [John Jr.] the harpooner. ... On this particular voyage, presumably somewhere in the Pacific, a whale was sighted on March 10, 1868, and both father and son were assigned to a whaleboat with four other men to capture the whale. As frequently happened, the whale became angry and attacked the small boat. All were thrown into the water, and [John Jr.] , realizing that his father would be more susceptible to the cold water, swam to his assistance. Whether through injury from the whale or through other causes, [John Jr.] was drowned, but [John Sr.] was saved, and returned on the Niger on June 2, 1870."

ABIGAIL BRADFORD "ABBY" DAGGETT was born on 1 Feb 1846 in Holmes Hole. She married CONSTANT D. LUCE, son of STEPHEN LUCE JR. and ABIGAIL J. DAVIS, on 1 Dec 1892 in North Tisbury. She died on 11 Sep 1924 in Tisbury, aged 78, of "Acute Indigestion Endacarditis."

Her obituary states: "The sister of Obed Daggett of Cedar Tree Neck, Lambert's Cove, she had resided in town quite a few years since she had sold Lambert's Cove property to Prof. Shaler in a pretty part of the precincts of Seven Gates Place. … With her sister, Mrs. Lucy Gray, she was long a tenant of Capt. Gilbert L. Smith in what is now the Vineyard Weaver shop. Faithful in her Christian duties, which to her sincere and simply piety meant a loyal and constant attendance at its every service, as strength permitted. Yet Mrs. Luce was not in the least narrow in spirit, but loved to hear all the best speakers as they came within her ken, and was never happier than at the regular Neighborhood Convention. One thinks of her as one who was only by the necessities of daily life a Martha rather than Mary."

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged five, with her parents; on the (West?) Tisbury census of 1855, aged nine, with her parents; again on the West Tisbury census of 1860, aged 15; on the census of 12 Jul 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 19; and again on the Holmes Hole census of 1870, aged 24, no occupation, with her parents. She was called a resident of Tisbury in 1876, and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 34, single, with her mother and brothers. She was called a resident of West Tisbury in her 1892 marriage record. She appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1900, aged 54, with her husband, next door to her sister Lucy. After her death in 1924 her personal estate was valued at $484.80 and her real estate (woodlot and swampland) at $71.67, and at the time of her death she owed her sister Lucy E. Gray thirty-five weeks of rent.

Constant D. Luce was born on 17 Jul 1835 in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 14, with his parents; on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 20, blacksmith, with his parents; and on the West Tisbury census of 1860, farmer, aged 24, with his parents. In September 1862 the Gazette Tisbury enrollment list called him a resident of Tisbury. He appeared on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 28, farmer, with his parents; on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 35, farmer, with his parents; and on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 44, farmer, single, living with his mother. In February 1884 he married Mrs. B. Crowell.

At the time of his second marriage to Abigail Daggett in, he was described as a West Tisbury farmer. He is listed as a farmer in the 1897 directory of North Tisbury. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1900 aged 64, farmer, with his wife.

He died on 9 Sep 1904 in West Tisbury, aged 69, of "Valvular Disease of Heart." His personal estate was valued at $1151.03 and his real estate (including five lots, a house, a barn, a shed, outbuildings, and shares in the Middletown Hall Association) at $1886.

Constant and Abigail had no children.

MARY MERRY DAGGETT was born on 19 Oct 1847 at Cedar Tree Neck. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged two, with her parents, but probably died on 14 Nov 1852 in Tisbury, aged five, of "Inflamation of Throat."

410. OBED SHERMAN DAGGETT was born 22 Aug 1850 in Cedar Tree Neck. He married MARIA ROBERTS GURNEY.

SAMUEL BRADFORD DAGGETT was born on 22 Mar 1852 in Cedar Tree Neck. He died on 4 Jun 1919 in Sanford, FL, aged 67. (The Gazette reported that "Samuel B. Daggett died suddenly in Sanford, Fla. June 4. Mr. Daggett was born in West Tisbury March 22, 1852 and had lived in that town till eight years ago, when he went to Florida, having been there several winters previous. He leaves a brother, Obed S., and two sisters, Mrs. Abbie B. Luce and Mrs. Lucy E. Gray.")

He appeared on the (West?) Tisbury census of 1855, aged three, with his parents; again on the West Tisbury census of 1860, aged eight; again on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 13; and on the Holmes Hole census of 1870, aged 18, no occupation, with his parents. He was called a Tisbury resident in 1876, and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 28, single, farmer, with his mother. He was called a resident of North Tisbury in 1892, and listed as a North Tisbury laborer in 1897. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1900, aged 48, single farm laborer, living with his brother Obed's family. (The census noted that he was unemployed nine months of the past year.) He did not appear in the 1907 directory of Martha's Vineyard, and about 1911 he removed to Florida, where he died.

411. LUCY ELLEN DAGGETT was born 12 Jul 1855 at Cedar Tree Neck in West Tisbury. She married (1st) ERFORD W. BURT; she married (2nd)SHUBAEL WEEKS GRAY.

404. CAROLINE P. HATCH (Laura2 West, Jeruel1) also went by the name of "CLARA" and "CARRIE." She was born on 7 Jun 1828 in Tisbury. She married CAPT. EDWARD DILLINGHAM, son of ZENAS DILLINGHAM and ELIZABETH SLOCUM, on 5 Nov 1848. She died on 5 Jul 1871 in Vineyard Haven, aged 43, of "Hermorage from the Womb" (she also bore a stillborn boy on this date), and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

She was listed as a child on the 1840 census of her father James Hatch in Tisbury, and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 21, living with her husband in her parents' home. (Her husband's parents lived next door.) She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 27, with her husband and children, and on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 31, with her husband and daughter. She appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 35, "housewife," with her husband and daughter, and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 41, "keeping house," with her husband and daughter. Her 1871 death record noted that she lived at the 'Neck' in Tisbury.

Capt. Edward Dillingham was born on 17 Aug 1824 in Tisbury. His obituary states that Capt. Dillingham "was a man much respected in this community. His ever ready wit made him a pleasant conversationalist." He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 25, mariner, living with his wife and in-laws, next door to his parents, and was called a Tisbury mariner on the 1852 and 1855 birth records of his children. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 31, mariner, with his wife and children. In the 1858 Walling Map, "E. Dillingham" appears in the area of Frog Alley, near the homes of W. Cleveland, M.(?) Morrison, and "J. Hatch" (his father-in-law.) He appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, mariner, with his wife, daughter, and his sister-in law's family. (This census also valued his real estate at $600.) He is mentioned in the Gazette Tisbury "enrollment list" of September 1862 as a resident of Tisbury. He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 40, "seaman," with his wife and daughter. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 45, mariner, with his wife and daughter. (This census valued his real estate at $1000.) He was called a Tisbury Neck mariner on his stillborn child's July 1871 birth record.

On 27 Dec 1871, following the death of his wife, Edward Dillingham of Tisbury, his late wife's parents (Laura and James W. Hatch), and his sister in-law (Hattie A. Hatch) sold Jeruel West's Frog Alley home for $1 to his brother-in-law George W. Hatch of Tisbury. Edward Dillingham then married (2nd) Abbie N. (--?--) sometime before June 1880, and he appeared on the Tisbury census of June 1880 as a 55-year-old "sailor" with his wife "Abbie." In May 1884, he was called captain of Schooner Neponset. He died on 8 Jun 1885 in Vineyard Haven, aged 60, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Children of CAROLINE P. HATCH and CAPT. EDWARD DILLINGHAM were as follows:

EDWARD P. DILLINGHAM was born on 28 Mar 1852 in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855 with his parents, but died on 19 Apr 1856 in Holmes Hole, aged four, of croup.

LOUISE HARDING DILLINGHAM was born on 31 Mar 1855 in Tisbury. She married CAPT. WILLIAM M. RANDALL, son of SYLVESTER RANDALL and SARAH ANN (--?--), on 24 Feb 1876 in Tisbury. She died on 1 May 1906 in Brooklyn Borough, New York City, aged 51, of pneumonia. (The 3 May 1906 issue of the Gazette reported that "Intelligence has reached here of the severe illness of Mrs. Wm. M. Randall, Regent of the Sea Coast Defense Chapter, D.A.R., who was in New York for a short stay after having attended the Continental Congress in Washington, D. C. Capt. Randall left on Tuesday morning and friends anxiously await further news. [Since the above was written the sad news of Mrs. Randall's death has reached us, and the community mourns." The 10 May 1906 issue of the Gazette reported that "The funeral service of Mrs. Louise H., wife of Captain William M. Randall, of this place, held in the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, was perhaps the most largely attended funeral ever held in this town, the public character of Mrs. Randall's services and wide social sphere contributing to that end."). She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Her husband's obituary notes that Louise "was his constant companion on his voyages until the loss of his beautiful and finely furnished floating home, the four-masted schooner Louise H. Randall, in a terrific gale and blinding snowstorm off Long Island and their narrow escape from death, shocked her nerves so that she persuaded her husband to give up the merchant service. (A very graphic story of this thrilling experience and escape from drowning was penned by Mrs. Randall and printed in a neat pamphlet.)"

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged five months, with her parents; on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged five; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged ten; and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 15, "attending school," with her parents. She was listed as a Tisbury resident in her 1876 marriage record, but I could find no Randalls in the 1880 census of Tisbury, so perhaps they had embarked on their schooner by this date. On 2 Dec 1882 her grandmother Laura A. Hatch willed her $5.

In Nov 1893 she and her husband were rescued after a storm sank their schooner Louise H. Randall off Long Island. See The Fate of the Schooner Louise H. Randall: A Story of the Sea by Louise H. Randall (Boston, 1903) for her account of this experience. This booklet also includes photos of she and her husband, and can be found at the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society.

On 12 Dec 1895, the Gazette reported that "Mrs. Louise Randall has taken rooms at Mr. Edward Smith's on Wharf Street for the winter."

She became a charter member of VH branch of the D.A.R. (the Sea Coast Defense Chapter) in 1896, and served as regent in 1904 and 1905.

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900 on Union St., aged 45, with her husband.

Capt. William M. Randall was born on 25 Nov 1853 in Port Jefferson, Long Island, NY. He married (1st) LOUISE HARDING DILLINGHAM, on 24 Feb 1876 in Tisbury, and he married (2nd) LOU D. MCDONNELL on 2 May 1912 in Vineyard Haven. He died on 30 Jan 1914 in his home on Main Street, Vineyard Haven, aged 60, of "chronic valvular disease of the heart." (The Gazette reported that "His last illness, a painful one, was of months duration so that his death was not unexpected.") He was buried on 2 Feb 1914 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury "with full Masonic ritual and honors."

He obituary states that he was "for half his lifetime one of the best known masters of our seacoast and then a prominent investor in real estate and other kinds of property. Capt. Randall commanded the respect of all who knew him for sound sense and excellent business judgment by which he acquired a competency. …Capt. Randall was born at Fort Jefferson, L. I., of seafaring stock and became master of a vessel at the early age of 17 years. He married for his first wife Louise Harding Dillingham of this town and she was his constant companion on his voyages until the loss of his beautiful and finely furnished floating home, the four-masted schooner Louise H. Randall, in a terrific gale and blinding snowstorm off Long Island and their narrow escape from death, shocked her nerves so that she persuaded her husband to give up the merchant service. (A very graphic story of this thrilling experience and escape from drowning was penned by Mrs. Randall and printed in a neat pamphlet.) …The Captain then became owner of the water boat Susie D. and purveyor to the needs of all the craft passing through Vineyard sound and touching here. From this business he retired some years ago certainly 'well-to-do.' Capt. Randall was a Master Mason and Son of the Am. Revolution."

He was remembered to have owned a house, behind (and perhaps to the north of) the present location of the Martha's Vineyard National Bank building, previously owned by Barzilla Crowell and later owned by Capt. Randall's widow.

His first marriage record in 1876 calls him a Port Jefferson, NY mariner. He resided in November 1892 in Boston, but he was listed in the 1897 directory of Vineyard Haven on Main St., and appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900 on Union St., aged 46, master mariner of a steamboat, living with his wife Louise. The Gazette noted in April 1902 that his house, "next the Stevens place, has...been taken for the summer." He is listed in the 1907 directory of Vineyard Haven on Main St.

In 1894 William Randall bought Lots #5 and #6 on Hatch Road in Frog Alley from Daniel Stevens, and in November 1897 he sold "Lot #6" to Louis W. Legg of Tisbury, who sold it back to William Randall in 1909. In Sept. 1906 William Randall sold "Lot #5" (which previously belonged to Edward and Mary F. West) to Emma Hallett.

An undated 1908 newspaper clipping titled Sale of Steamer Susie D. notes that "The Susie D. is one of the best known vessels on the coast. Capt. William M. Randall, the master and managing owner, is retiring from active business...." It goes on to note that this vessel ran mail for many years.

He is listed in the 1910-11 directory of Tisbury on Main St. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1910, aged 56, widower, living alone on his "own income." He married again in 1912, and the Gazette reported that "Capt. Randall is one of the best known Master mariners on the American coast, and Mrs. Randall comes from an old and well-known family of Ohio. They both spend their winters in the sunny south, and it was there that they met."

He died on 30 Jan 1914, and his death record called him a "retired master mariner." His inventory included $25,226 in personal estate, and $23,440 in real estate, comprised of the "Dillingham House," the "Legge House," the "Tashmoo House," the "Beaton Place house," the "Crowell Place house," the "Vincent Place house," the "Hanfsen(?) Place house," a building on Main St., land at Port Jefferson, NY, and a half interest in the "Roland Luce Farm" in West Tisbury.

In 1915 Mrs. Randall's estate sold "Lot #6" (now lot H5) and the buildings upon it to Emma Hallett.

Louise and William Randall had no children.

(STILLBORN) DILLINGHAM born and died on 5 Jul 1871 at the 'Neck', Tisbury.

405. JAMES WARD HATCH JR. (Laura2West, Jeruel1) was born on 6 Aug 1832 in Holmes Hole. He married SOPHRONIA JANE WILSON, daughter of CAPT. ROBERT T. WILSON and SUSAN H. MERRY, on 26 Jun 1860 in Holmes Hole. He died on 10 Nov 1872 at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Tisbury, aged 40, of "Dropsey."

He was listed on the 1840 Tisbury census with his father, James Hatch. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 17, mariner, living with his parents, and again on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 23, mariner, with his parents. He was described as being 5' 2" tall (having grown from 5' 1" tall at age 16), with light complexion, brown hair, and either "blue" (1856) or "dark" (1848) eyes.

He was called a Tisbury mariner in his 1860 marriage record. He appeared Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 27, mariner, living with his wife in the home of his sister Caroline. (This census valued his real estate at $500.) The September 1862 Gazette Tisbury "draft list" listed him as "at sea." He was called a Tisbury mariner on his first child's 1862 birth record. He appeared on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 32, mariner, with his wife, and was called a Tisbury "seaman" on his daughter's 1866 birth record.

He and his wife do not appear in the 1870 Tisbury census, although a card in the Roy Norton catalog at the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society notes that "James and his wife had smallpox; a bill in 1870 was sent to the town of Tisbury from the Boston Alms House because he and his wife had smallpox." The Hatch genealogy suggests that they may have been living in Newton, MA about this time. The November 1871 birth record of his son, Frederick, however, calls him a mariner residing at Tisbury "Neck."

In December 1871, he, his sister, his sister Caroline's widower, and his mother sold the old Jeruel West homestead on the southeast of the "Frog Pond" at Frog Alley for $1 to his brother George W. Hatch of Tisbury. James Hatch died in 1872, and his death record described him as a Tisbury "mariner."

Sophronia Jane Wilson was born on 4 May 1843, probably in Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged seven, with her parents, and was called a Tisbury resident in her 1860 marriage record. She appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 17, with her husband, and again on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 22, "tailoress," with her husband. Although she does not appear in the 1870 Tisbury census, the Tisbury death records show that she died there on 11 Dec 1871, aged 28, of "Dropsy of Heart."

Children of JAMES WARD HATCH and SOPHRONIA JANE WILSON were as follows:

EDWARD PALMER HATCH was born on 7 Oct 1862 in Tisbury. He married (1st) JANE EMERSON sometime between 1880 and 1891; he married (2nd) ISABELLE JACKSON on 11 Sep 1912. He died sometime after 1913 in Newtonville, MA.

He does not appear with his parents in the 1865 census (and I have not found he or his parents in the 1870 census), but the Hatch genealogy notes that he attended the "West Newton English Classical School" (during the period his parents were suffering in the Boston Alms House with smallpox!) He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880 with his grandparents, aged 17, single fisherman. On 25 Nov 1881 the Gazette reported that "Mr. Ed. P. Hatch is employed in a bookstore in Boston."

On 19 Dec 1884 the Gazette reported that "Mr. Edward P. Hatch is home from Milton for a brief tarry," and the administration papers of his grandmother, Laura (West) Hatch notes that he was residing in Milton in January 1885. In March 1891 Edward P. Hatch and his wife "of Newton … sole surviving heir and legatee of James W. Hatch Jr." sold a one-acre lot at Holmes Hole neck near the "meadow path" to Abner Mayhew. He does not appear in the 1897 Vineyard directory or the 1910 Tisbury census, but he visited the Vineyard in May 1912 to attend Capt. Wm. Randall's second marriage, and the 9 May 1912 issue of the Gazette calls him "President of Lincoln Trust Co., Boston."

The Hatch Genealogy notes that Edward "took an active part in civic and business affairs of Newton. Was an original organizer, and member of St. John's Episcopal Church. [He] was always greatly interested in Masonry and was an honary member of the Dahousie Lodge" and also that he was "associated with different banks, as cashier, treasurer, Vice-Pres., and Pres." An undated newspaper clipping titled "A New Bank President" notes that "Edward P. Hatch [is] at the Head of the Freeman's National Bank" [in Boston.]

A drawing of him appears in a newspaper clipping found in the black "Genealogy Notebook" series at the MVHS (under "Hatch.")

Jane Emerson died in 1911.

Isabelle Jackson married (1st) (--?--) Moio before 1912 Their children were ADELE MOIO and FRANCES MOIO.

GRACIE T. HATCH was born on 11 Feb 1866 in Tisbury. The Hatch genealogy notes that she died on 8 Apr 1870, aged four, although her death probably occurred in Boston or Newton, as the town of Tisbury did not report her death.

FREDERICK AUGUSTUS HATCH was born on 19 Nov 1871 at the "Neck" in Tisbury. He probably died before January 1885, as he was not mentioned as next of kin of grandmother Laura Hatch on that date, and in a 1891 deed his brother Edward was called the "sole surviving heir" of their father.

406. WILLIAM F. HATCH (Laura2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 4 Dec 1837 in Tisbury. He married MARGARET (--?--) between about 1860 and 1862, and was "probably killed" between about 1862 and 1865.

He was listed on the Tisbury census of 1840 with his father James Hatch; he appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 13, with his parents; he appeared on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 18, mariner, with his parents; and he appeared on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 21, mariner, with his parents. He "removed west and married" soon after the census of 1860 was taken, probably living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin around 1862 for a time before enlisting in the army and vanishing.

On 16 Dec 1881, the Gazette reported that "Many years ago Mr. Wm. Hatch, of this place, started on a whaling voyage from which he never returned, and was heard of after a while in one of the western states, but never again until a short time since, when his sister, Mrs. Hattie Legge, received a letter from a young lady, saying that Mr. Hatch was her father, that he enlisted in the army and was reported missing after one of the great battles of the late war, and was probably killed as no further tidings were heard from him. Among her father's papers she found the name of 'Hattie Hatch, Vineyard Haven, Mass.,' and as her mother had died during her childhood, she expressed a desire to visit her relatives is agreeable to them, and being invited to do so, arrived at Vineyard Haven last week, and was warmly welcomed by all concerned."

Margaret (--?--) was probably born before 1846 in NY. She died before 1881.

Children of WILLIAM F. HATCH and MARGARET (--?--)were:

412. MARY ANN HATCH was born 20 Jan 1862 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She married ERNEST CHESTER WEST.

407. HARRIET ANN "HATTIE" HATCH (Laura2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 27 Nov 1844 in Tisbury. She married LEWIS A. LEGG, son of WILLIAM H. LEGG and CHARLOTTE SEARS, on 23 Feb 1874 in Tisbury. She died on 24 Feb 1916 in Tisbury, aged 71, of "Cancer of Uterus," and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 5, with her parents; on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 10, with her parents; on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 15, with her parents; and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 25 (no occupation), with her mother and brother. On 27 Dec 1871 Harriet, her parents, and her brother-in-law sold the Jeruel West home at Frog Alley to her brother George W. Hatch. She was called a Tisbury resident in her 1874 marriage record, and in her son's June 1875 birth record.

Following her husband's death about 1875, Hattie appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 34, widowed "dress maker" boarding with her mother Laura A. Hatch and her son Lewis A. Legg. She was called a resident of Vineyard Haven in 1881. Although a 6 Feb 1896 issue of the Gazette suggests that she may have been a resident of West Tisbury at that time, I could not find her in the 1900 census. The 1907 directory of Vineyard Haven lists her as a resident of "The Neck," and she appeared on the 1910 census of Tisbury on the "Water Front," aged 60, with Heman N. Manchester. Her probate mentions that she owned a half interest in a "house lot and holdings known as the Hatch homestead in Tisbury" valued at $1400 which was bequeathed to her son Louis upon her death.

Lewis A. Legg (or Legge) was born about 1843-4 in St. Helena. He doesn't appear in the 1850 or 1855 censuses on the Vineyard, but he did appear on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 17, with his parents; on the census of 1865 in East Parish, Tisbury, aged 21, single seaman, living with his mother; and on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 27, mariner, with his mother. He was called a Tisbury mariner in his 1874 marriage record, and on his son's 1875 birth record.

Lewis Legg was evidently lost at sea before 6 Sep 1875, the date on which the first papers in his probate are dated. I have found no death record, gravestone, or Gazette notice regarding his death. His inventory listed no real estate, and a personal estate valued at $140. His widow Hattie was the only mentioned kin, and no reference is made to his son, who was probably born after his death.

Children of HARRIET ANN HATCH and LEWIS A. LEGG were:

413. LOUIS WHITNEY LEGG(E) was born 5 Jun 1875 in Vineyard Haven. He married ELIZABETH OSBORN BEETLE.

408. MARTHA E. "MATTIE" WEST (Edward2, Jeruel1) was born in 1852 in Tisbury. She married CALEB HILLER NORTON, son of CONSTANT NORTON and HARRIET WEEKS, on 11 Oct 1868 in Tisbury; they divorced between 1872 and 1880. She died before 1910.

She appeared on the 1855 census of Tisbury, aged three, "pauper," and does not appear in the 1860 census of Tisbury or Chilmark. She appeared on the 1865 census of West Parish, Tisbury, aged 12, "pauper," living with Hannah Look (a 72-year-old widow), farmer David Nickerson, and his wife Harriet, in West Tisbury. Her 1868 marriage record calls her a resident of Tisbury, as does an 1869 deed and the 1870 birth record of her first child. She appeared on the 1870 census of Tisbury, aged 18, with her husband and daughter. The 1871 birth record of her second daughter calls her a Tisbury resident, as does a deed in July 1874.

Martha Norton divorced Caleb Norton between 1872 and 1880, and she then apparently left the Island or died, as I was unable to find her in the 1880, 1900, or 1910 censuses of the Vineyard towns.

Caleb Hiller Norton was born on 29 Mar 1843 in Tisbury. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged seven, with his parents; on the Tisbury census of 1855, aged 12, with his parents; and again on the Holmes Hole census of 1860, aged 17, with his parents. The Gazette's enrollment list of September 1862 lists him as a resident of Tisbury, and his October 1868 marriage record calls him a Tisbury farmer."

His first daughter's 1870 birth record calls him a Tisbury farmer. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1870, aged 26, farmer, with his wife and daughter, and his second daughter's 1871 birth record calls him a Tisbury farmer. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 36, farm laborer (6 months unemployed during the past year), "divorced," living with his parents and daughter. He does not appear in the 1897 or 1907 Vineyard directories, but he does appear on the Tisbury census of 1910, aged 60, "widower," boarding with Samuel T. and Sarah B. Davis.

He died on 17 Jan 1918 at Mass. General Hospital in Boston, aged 74, of "Stricture of Urethra," and was buried in Lambert's Cove Cemetery, West Tisbury. His death record called him a widower "gardener."

Children of MARTHA E. WEST and CALEB HILLER NORTON were as follows:

414. FLORENCE L. NORTON was born 31 May 1870 in Tisbury. She married CAPT. AXEL W. KRUSE.

LILLIAN E. NORTON was born on 18 Dec 1871 in Tisbury. Lillian probably died before 1880, as she doesn't appear in the 1880 census of Tisbury, Cottage City, or Chilmark (although her father and sister do) but she is not listed in the Mass Death Registration Index for 1871-80.

409. BELINDA WEST DAGGETT (Harriet2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 9 Dec 1838 in Holmes Hole. She married ALLEN B. WILCOX, son of HENRY R. WILCOX and ABBY B. BOURNE, on 30 Nov 1856 at the Baptist church in Tisbury. She died on 30 Nov 1870 in New Bedford, aged 31, of heart disease.

She was listed in the Tisbury census of 1840 with her father, John Daggett; she appeared on the Tisbury census of 1850, aged 14 (or 12?**), with her parents; and on the (West?) Tisbury census of 1855, aged 17, with her parents. She was called a resident of Tisbury in her 1856 marriage record.

The birth record of her son in 1859 lists her residence as Ray St., New Bedford, and she appeared on the census of 1860 in Ward 2, New Bedford, aged 23, with her husband, son, and her husband's family. She appeared again on the census of 1870 in Ward 2, New Bedford, aged 31, "Keeping House," with her husband and her son Henry, in the home of her husband's parents.

There is a reference to a photo of Belinda Daggett Wilcox in the black "Genealogy Notebook" series at the MVHS, (under "Daggett.")

Allen B. Wilcox was born on 26 Aug 1831 in New Bedford, MA.. The 1856 directory of New Bedford lists him as a "shipwright" living at 96 Ray Street, New Bedford, and his November 1856 marriage record calls him a New Bedford carpenter. The 1859 birth record of his son lists him as carpenter living on Ray St. in New Bedford. He appeared on the census of 1860 in Ward 2, New Bedford, aged 28 (no occupation) with his wife, son, parents, and siblings. The 1867-8 directory of New Bedford lists him as a laborer employed by the N. B. Copper Works, and residing at 96 Ray, New Bedford. He appeared on the census of 1870 in Ward 2, New Bedford, aged 38, "Works in Copper Works," with his wife and son, in the home of his parents.

Following the death of his wife in 1870, Allen appeared in the 1879 directory of New Bedford, "employed with N. B. Copper Works" and living at 506 Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford. He appeared on the census of 1880 in Ward 2, New Bedford, aged 47, single, carpenter, with his parents and brother.

I have no record of Allen Wilcox after 1880, and he does not appear in the 1883 New Bedford Directory.

Children of BELINDA WEST DAGGETT and ALLEN B. WILCOX were:

415. HENRY F. WILCOX was born 22 Apr 1859 in New Bedford, MA. He married (1st) MARTHA M. BURNETT; he married (2nd) CAROLINE R. EDDY.

410. OBED SHERMAN DAGGETT (Harriet2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 22 Aug 1850 in Cedar Tree Neck, North Tisbury. He married MARIA ROBERTS GURNEY, daughter of REV. THEOPHILUS B. GURNEY and REBECCA R. NEWCOMB, on 12 Feb 1884 in Marshfield, MA. He died on 31 Dec 1934 at Salem Hospital, Salem, MA, aged 84, of "Carcinoma of Prostrate" (the Gazette wrote "…after a brief illness.") He was buried on 3 Jan 1935 in Oak Grove Cemetery (Cedar Ave.).

His obituary calls him "one of the pioneers of Vineyard trapfishing and known to summer visitors from all parts of the United States ...Captain Daggett was the son of John T. and Harriet Daggett and was born in the homestead at Cedar Tree Neck. In his boyhood he worked for John Look, in the tannery. As a young man he was employed by the firm later known as Look, Washburn and Company, and it was one of his duties to drive the peddle-cart which served the up-Island towns. But he was still a young man when he began to engage in trapfishing, an industry which pursued throughout his active years with unusual success, amassing a great fund of knowledge about fish and their movements. …Captain and Mrs. Daggett for many years maintained a summer boarding house at their home at Cedar Tree Neck. It was one of the pioneer ventures of the kind outside the larger towns of the Vineyard, and always remained distinctive for the genuine quality of the hospitality and the completely unspoiled surroundings in which it was set."

The book It Began with a Whale has a full biography of Obed Daggett. It mentions that "[Obed] and his brothers and sisters used to go to the so-called Old Wood School, a one room school, located on Seven Gates Farm. …One of his early tasks was working in a tannery at Lambert's Cove... At a later period, he worked for John Look, also of Lambert's Cove, in the slaughtering and meat business. [He] also drove a meat cart about the Island for him. After a few years, [he] engaged in farming and fishing."

He appeared on the (West?) Tisbury census of 1855, aged five, with his parents; on the West Tisbury census of 1860, aged ten, with his parents; on the census of 1865 in West Parish, Tisbury, aged 14, with his parents; and on the census of 1870 in Holmes Hole, aged 19 (no occupation), with parents. He was the administrator of his father's probate in 1876. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged 29, single farmer, with his mother, and was called a Tisbury farmer in his 1884 marriage record. Obed was called a North Tisbury farmer in his children's birth records in 1886, 1887, and 1889. He was called a Tisbury resident in 1892, and was called a North Tisbury fisherman in the 1897 directory. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1900, aged 49, farmer, with his wife, three children, a brother, and five employees (including Otis E. Burt and "William B. Wilcox.") The 1907 directory of North Tisbury called him a North Shore fisherman. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1910, aged 59, trap fisherman, with his wife and children, and on the West Tisbury census of 1920 on Indian Hill Road, aged 69, trap fisherman, with his wife and maid. He was called a resident of West Tisbury in 1924.

See the "Interesting Vineyarders" column in 25 Nov 1927 issue of Vineyard Gazette.

Articles in a 1930 and a 1932 issue of the Gazette called him a resident of Cedar Tree Neck. He was called a widowed fisherman in his 1934 death record. He died less than two months after his wife.

There is a photo of him on page eight of "It Began With a Whale." Also, the MVHS has reference to a photo of Obed "c. 1874".

Maria Roberts Gurney was born on 19 Mar 1860 in East Hartford, CT. Her obituary states: "Born in Connecticut, Mrs. Daggett came to the Vineyard as a young woman with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. Theophilus B. Gurney, her father becoming the pastor of the Lambert's Cove church. Mrs. Daggett, who had previously been educated at a college in Georgia, became the teacher of the Lambert's Cove school." The book It Began with a Whale adds that she "went to the local schools [in Rome, Georgia, where her pastor father was sent], and then later attended the Rome Female College. When her father came north, he became pastor of the Methodist Church at Lambert's Cove. Mother, although only 16 or 17 years old, taught school; first, at Chappaquonsett located on Lambert's Cove road near the town line between West Tisbury and Tisbury, then later in the school opposite the Methodist Church. ... After leaving the Vineyard, her father was sent...to Cochesett, Mass., and [Maria] worked as a proofreader for the Brockton Enterprise."

Maria was called a Marshfield "teacher" in her 1884 marriage record. She appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1900, aged 40, with her husband, three children, a brother-in-law, and five employees, and on the West Tisbury census of 1910, aged 50, "keeper [of a] summer boarder house," with her husband and children. She was called a resident of Lambert's Cove in a 1915 Gazette article. She appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1920 on Indian Hill Road, aged 59, with her husband. She died on 8 Nov 1934 "at the Daggett homestead" in Cedar Tree Neck, aged 74, of "Pulmonary Oedema / Arterio Sclerosis" "…suddenly ...following a period of ill health" and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (Cedar Ave.)

An April 1915 issue of the Gazette called her a "successful teacher of art in Gorham, Me," and articles in November 1934 and January, 1935 refer to her as an unmarried teacher living in Kearny, NJ.

416. JOHN TOBEY DAGGETT was born 26 Nov 1887 in North Tisbury. He married EMILY DORA CHAMBERS.

She was called a Tisbury resident in July 1876, but moved to her husband's hometown of Taunton by December 1877. She was presumably still living in Taunton at the time of his death in March 1879, but soon after returned to her home on the Vineyard.

412. MARY ANN HATCH (William3, Laura2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 20 Jan 1862 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She married ERNEST CHESTER WEST, son of CAPT. ABNER WEST and SARAH ELIZABETH HODGE, in Jul 1882 in Tisbury. She died about 1956-7 in Santa Anna, CA.

She was called "at home" in Tisbury in her July 1882 marriage record. Her grandmother Laura A. (West) Hatch wrote her will in December 1882, and bequeathed to her 25 cents. 413. LOUIS WHITNEY LEGG(E) (Harriet3 Hatch, Laura2 West, Jeruel1)was born on 5 Jun 1875 in Vineyard Haven, probably to a recently widowed mother (as his father was evidently lost at sea shortly before his birth.) He sometimes went by the name of "WHITNEY" or "WHIT." He married ELIZABETH OSBORN BEETLE, daughter of WILLIAM H. BEETLE and SARAH N. WINSLOW, on 10 Feb 1897 at the "Mansion House" in New Bedford. He died on 23 Jan 1948 in the Martha's Vineyard Nursing Home in Oak Bluffs, aged 72, of cerebral thrombosis and cerebral arteriosclerosis "...following an illness dating from last May. Mr. Legg had previously been a patient at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital." He was buried on 28 Jan 1948 in Oak Grove Cemetery.

His obituary calls him a "well known resident of Vineyard Haven… He had made his home in the town of his birth throughout his life, and he had followed no trade or profession save that of plumber and steam-fitter. In this profession he had conducted his own business, and likewise worked in the employ of other local plumbing firms... He was associated with the Christ Methodist Church, but was not known to have been affiliated with other organizations, and generally lived a very quiet life." In 1982 Stan Lair and Basil Welch reminisced on an audio tape about "Whit" Legg who they remembered as living on the corner of Daggett Ave. and Franklin St. Basil said that he "lived alone when I knew him. He was an old man then. He had a big white mustache." He also talks about how he loved riding in Basil's Model T Ford touring car. Stan Lair noted that "Whit was an old-time plumber. He worked for Willis Hancock, he worked for Armsby too, I think, way back there. He was a good guy, always had a story to tell, good humor. ...Whit was one of the group that used to go over on the trolley cars to Oak Bluffs. Of course Oak Bluffs was 'wet,' this town was 'dry,' and I guess the last car back home at night was really something on Saturday night. All these fellows that'd been over at the bar room and coming home. ...He was a pretty nice guy. I liked him."

He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged five, with his widowed mother, uncle, and grandmother. He was listed as a laborer living on North Main Street in the 1897 directory of Vineyard Haven, and his occupation was described as "Plumbing" on his February 1897 Tisbury marriage record. (The Gazette reported after the marriage that "The happy couple returned to Vineyard Haven on Monday, and will occupy the Cleveland house at the Neck, now owned by Capt. Randall.") In November 1897 Louis W. Legg bought "Lot #6" on Hatch Road from William Randall (and then sold it back to Randall in 1909.) He was called a Vineyard Haven "plumber" on his son's 1898 birth record. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900, aged 24, plumber, with his wife and son. The 1907 directory of Vineyard Haven listed him as a plumber living at "The Neck." He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1910 at the "Water Front," aged 34, journeyman plumber, with his wife and sons. The April 1915 Tisbury tax list listed him as a 38-year-old plumber living on Hatch Rd. In February 1916 his mother willed him half-interest in the "Hatch homestead." He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1920 on Hatch Road, aged 44, "Plumbing Shop Apprentice," with his wife, sons, his aunt Hattie, and his mother-in-law. He was called a Tisbury resident in 1943. His 1948 death record called him a widowed plumber.

Elizabeth Osborn Beetle was born on 30 Nov 1875 in Vineyard Haven. Her obituary states that "She was born in Vineyard Haven, the daughter of William H. and Sarah Winslow Beetle, and spent practically her entire life in that town. …Mrs. Legge was devoted to her home and led a quiet and industrious life. She was associated with Christ Methodist church". She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged four, with her parents, and her 1897 marriage record listed her as "at home" in Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900, aged 24, with her husband and son. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1910 on the "Water Front," aged 34, with her husband and sons. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1920 on Hatch Road, aged 44, with her husband, children, and mother. She was called a resident of Vineyard Haven in 1935.

She died on 17 Jun 1943 at the Palmer Memorial Hospital in Boston, aged 67 of "Carcinoma of Pharynx / Carcinoma of Cervex / Nodes Cochexia." (The Gazette noted that she "had been in poor health for some time.") She was buried on 21 Jun 1943 in Oak Grove Cemetery. Her death record calls her a married Tisbury "housewife." At her death she owned three fifty-foot-wide lots on the north side of Daggett Ave. in addition to her homestead.

Children of LOUIS WHITNEY LEGG and ELIZABETH OSBORN BEETLE were as follows:

EDWARD MARSTON LEGGE was born on 29 Jan 1898 in Vineyard Haven. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900, aged two, with his parents; on the Tisbury census of 1910 at the "Water Front," aged 12, with his parents; and on the Tisbury census of 1920 on Hatch Road, aged 21, "Merchant Vessel Sailor," single, with his parents. By June 1943 he resided at 3721 Hereford Road, Erie, PA; he was called a resident of Erie, PA again in January 1948, and again at 3721 Hereford Road, Erie in August 1949.

He died in June 1979, and his last known residence was Debary, Volusia Co., FL. The name of his wife is unknown, but "three grandchildren" are mentioned in his mother Elizabeth's 1943 obituary, and "four grandchildren" in 1948, all of whom I presume must be Edward's children.

I spoke to the present owner of the house at 3721 Hereford Road, Erie in February, 1997, Mr. John Ryan, who told me that he and his wife had bought their house from Edward Legge in 1950, and that the Legge family had moved "up the street," but he could provide no further details about them.

LOUIS RAYMOND LEGGE was born on 23 Apr 1908 in Tisbury. He died on 21 Mar 1926 in Tisbury, aged 17, of Appendicitis, and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (413 Cypress). He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1910 at the "Water Front," aged two, with his parents, and on the Tisbury census of 1920 on Hatch Road, aged 11, with his parents. His death record called him a single student.

She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1870, unnamed, aged one month, with her parents, and on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged ten, with her divorced father and his family.

Capt. Axel W. Kruse was likely born before 1867 in Skane, Sweden. He was called a Tisbury laborer in the 1886 birth record of his oldest child, a North Tisbury fisherman on the 1889 birth record of his second child, and a Tisbury fisherman on the 1890 birth record of his third child (?**). His brother Carl G. Kruse of West Tisbury died on 12 Dec 1893, and Axel was called his "only next of kin residing in this Commonwealth." (His 1893 probate also mentions their father Carl M. Kruse of Helsingburg, Sweden, a brother Ludwig S. Kruse of Carlskrown, Sweden, and a sister Thilda Luidgrane of _____, Sweden.)

Following Florence's death in 1894, Axel married (2nd) Grace E. Sandsbury on 22 Jan 1896 in West Tisbury. He is not listed in the 1897 or 1907 directories of the Vineyard. He reportedly "died on his vessel in Mayport, Florida (Now Jacksonville)" sometime after 22 Jan 1896, and may be buried in the Lambert's Cove Cemetery.

418. OTIS E. BURT (Lucy3 Daggett, Harriet2 West, Jeruel1) was born on 13 Dec 1877 in Taunton, MA. He married (1st) MARY EDNA HAWKINS, daughter of CLARENCE HAWKINS and LINA(?) MOURY, on 4 Dec 1896 in Tisbury. They were divorced on 27 Sep 1899 in Dukes County Superior Court. He married (2nd) HENRIETTA L. REED, daughter of FRANCIS HENRY REED and FRANCES HENRIETTA MAYHEW, on 25 Jan 1902 in the home of her father in West Tisbury. Otis died in 1960 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (Birch St.)

He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged three, with his widowed mother. His cousin Robert Daggett wrote in the book It Began with a Whale that "there was no pump in the early kitchen [of Obed Sherman Daggett's house in Cedar Tree Neck] until, perhaps, about the time that [Obed] was married [in 1884]. ...Originally the water was brought to the house by buckets from a well underneath the hill near the little pond at the north side. ...Otis E. Burt, who lived in the east portion of the house with his widowed mother and grandmother, was usually the water carrier." Otis was described as a West Tisbury fisherman in his 1896 marriage record, and was called a North Tisbury resident in February 1897.

Mary and Otis had "born to them" a daughter on 1 Jun 1890, for whom Otis was court-ordered to pay $6 monthly for child support, starting 1 April 1899. A divorce was granted 27 Sep 1899, on grounds of "adultery," at which time a second judge ordered child support payments to end. It is unclear who committed the adultery, but the fact that Otis' child support payments ended upon their divorce suggests the possibility that the child may have been an illegitimate daughter of Mary.

Otis appeared on the West Tisbury census of June 1900, aged 23, divorced fisherman, living with (and "employee" of) his uncle Obed Daggett. His second marriage record in January 1902 called him a West Tisbury fisherman. (The Gazette reported that they were to then "occupy the house at Breezy Hill owned by Mr. Benjamin O. Norton, of Vineyard Haven. They will be at this home after January 31st.") Otis had two listings in the 1907 directory: one for "Burt, Otis, fisherman, h. State rd., N. T." and another for "Burt, Otis E., fisherman, h. North Tisbury." He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1910, aged 33, trap fisherman, with his wife and four children (adjacent to the listing of Obed Daggett).

In 1915, the family moved with to the "Baxter House" [at Seven Gates?] and Otis delivered milk for Seven Gates Farm. (Later, when Otis became superintendent of Seven Gates, they moved into the superintendent's house.) Otis served as superintendent of Seven Gates Farm from about 1918 until 1945. He appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1920 at Seven Gates Farm, aged 43, "Assist.(?) Manager - Farm" with his wife and six children, and was called the "manager of the Seven Gates Farm Corporation" in 1924. In November 1924, "now retired," he and his wife were living in North Tisbury next to the Baptist Church. He was called a resident of West Tisbury in 1925 in West Tisbury, and of North Tisbury in 1934.

Mary Edna Hawkins was born about 1876-7 in Providence, RI. She was called a West Tisbury "house maid" in her 1896 marriage record. I have no record of her after their divorce in 1899.

Children of OTIS E. BURT and MARY EDNA HAWKINS were:

Henrietta L. "Etta" Reed was born about 1877 in Chilmark. Her 1902 marriage record called her "at home" in West Tisbury. She appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1910, aged 32, with her husband and four children. She appeared on the West Tisbury census of 1920 at Seven Gates Farm, aged 42(?), with her husband and children. She died on 10 Dec 1959 in Worcester, MA, aged 82(?), and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (136 Ash). Her death record calls her a widowed housewife.

Children of OTIS E. BURT and HENRIETTA L. REED were as follows:
