Crane Tipped on Union Street

This combination power derrick and shovel tipped over on Union Street while installing drainage, excavating, and laying a large tile. Miraculously, nobody was hurt. The crane was owned by Grant Bros. of Edgartown. At the time of the accident, Owen Rabbitt, Boleslaw Panek, and Francis Cecelio were in the trench, Ernest Pacheco was in the cab operating the crane, and Henry R. Anderson, state engineer, was standing nearby on the sidewalk. See the Mar. 21, 1952 Vineyard Gazette for details.

Lane's Block is on the left. The restaurant on the right was at one time Hallowell's, and later George Flathers' "The Moorings". It is now (2000) a clothing store.
