Large Group of People Posing on Huge Log Raft in Harbor


Caption: "Original Chamberlain Photograph of the Log Raft / Vineyard Haven Harbor, August, 1888."


"Message on back of photo reads: 592 feet long, 55 feet wide, has a total depth of 37 feet, draws 22 feet of water, contains 24,000 logs, displaces 20,000 tons of water and contains 5,000,000 feet of timber. It is 100 feet longer than the one lost last winter., cigar shaped and contains nearly (very) forty schooner loads. It is valued in Nova Scotia at $75,000 and is insured for $30,000. It is known as the Seary Raft and is from Joggins, N.S. It was towed out of the harbor on Wednesday, Aug. 8, 1888 by the steam tugs "Under Writer" and "Ocean King".
