Handwritten Notes: "The last stand of the heath hen was Martha's Vineyard - shown here are a male + female heath hen. The last sighting of the last heath hen was 1932. They are now extinct. They lived among the scrub oak in the central part of the Island. The large ...*"


* ... "forest fires of that era destroyed their nests and eggs. A bill once came up in the Legislature and the man that read it said 'This bill is to protect the heathens on Martha's Vineyard.' The heath hen has gone, but, the heathens are still around."
