Richard Worth of Nantucket, Mass. A name handed down through the 10 generations of carefully preserved Worth ancestor records; but who is he? The answer to this question awaits only a trip to Nantucket, Mass. According to correspondence received in July of 1982 from Alice Worth Coldren of Waterloo, Iowa the Peter Foulger Museum at Nantucket contains information on William, Richard's grandson, and "old maps showing the Worth property". The museum also exhibits a letter from Zola Edmunds Duffy requesting genealogical information. Sometime between the birth of William Worth of Nantucket in 1762 and his grandson Fordyce's birth in 1831, the family moved to Starksboro, Addison Co., Vermont. Two solid facts are known- The Worth family were members of the Society of Friends [Quakers] and have been in this country since the early 1640's.

From the Winona, Minnesota Sunday News; " The bewiskered Mr. Worth traveled the Iowa prairies with a horse and buggy and often rode horse back into the hills to minister to the sick. Many of the babies brought into this world are now senior citizens at Hesper. Lt ls related that on one occasion, when he went to deliver a baby, and upon examining the Mother in labor, he threw his instruments under the bed, being satisfied that the new born would make its way into the world without the assistance of them. Dr. Worth compeunded his own medicine. The story goes that after tasting his mixtures, he would add; Don't know if it will do any good, but then, it can't do any harm. The drug store carried a full line of School supplies, and included slates and slate pencils. For two cents children could buy a string of rock candy about 8 inches long, in either white or pink. The drug store was a fascinating place for the young and old to congregate in those days. The combined drug store and house was a large two story structure with the drug store on the west and the living quarters on the east. In Oct. of 1871, Dr. Worth was appointed postmaster at Hesper. He held the office until 1896, serving the longest term of any postmaster in the history of the village. He was pres. of the Houston, Minn, - Hesper southwestern Narrow gage Railroad in 1876. This proposed line was to run from Houston to Hesper and connect with the southern Minnesota railroad. Grading was begun for the new railroad, but never completed. Instead the narrow Gauge made its appearance at Mabel in 1879. Dr. Worth was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Modern Woodmen of America" Sarah:

Sarah Ann Keese was "carefully instrected" in the Quaker faith. Her father died when she was 16 year's old in 1849. She remained on the farm in Cardington with her Mother. In the fall of 1854, she registered in the preparatory Dept. of Antioc College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. According to a letter dated Nov 21,1961 [in the possession of Dr. Joy Wilson],the Faculty of the Preparatory school had as its President, the Honorable Horace Mann, L.L.D. Sarah did not complete her freshman year. Apparently, she moved with her Mother and some other relatives to Iowa where she taught school in Muscatine, in 1855-1856. On July 15, 1856, She Married Fordyce Worth and moved to Hesper, Iowa she remained there the rest of her life. In the early days of Iowa, she was an active worker in the cause of temperance. She filled the office of Grand Worthy Vice Templar of Iowa and later she was Grand Worthy Vice Templar of the United States. Always interested in educational work, she was instrumental in organizing the first kindergarten classes at Hesper, according to Burr Griswold,Historian. She also organized botanical classes and held these in her home. References to these classes can be found in the Worth Journal in the possession of Alouise Duffy Maguire of Omaha, Nebraska. Photos of the Worth Home in Hesper give testimony to the wonderful plants and flowers that Sarah Ann cultivated. She participated actively in all the literary organizations of Hesper. Several of her poems appeared in early journals of the day including "While I Wait Need I Be Idle" 1884, "Tis The Last Snow Of Winter" 1877, and "The Song Of Love" 1880.

Alice May too-too WORTH (1112.Fordyce7, 534.Joseph6, 164.William5, 49.Lionel4, 7.Richard3, 2.John2, 1.William1) b. 21 Jul 1858, Hesper, Iowa,6 m. 3 Apr 1879, in Hesper, Iowa, Charles Butler EDMUNDS, b. 13 Aug 1852, Adrian, Mich.,7 (son of Hiram EDMUNDS and Sarah Elvira BEAN) d. 23 Apr 1918, Centrel City, Nebraska, buried: Friends cemetery, Hesper, Iowa. Alice died 26 Jun 1931, Central City, Nebraska, buried: Friends cemetery, Hesper, Iowa. Alice May Worth, the only daughter of Fordyce and Sarah Ann Keese Worth enjoyed a warm and delightful childhood in Hesper. She lived there until the early 1880's when she moved with her Husband Dr. Charles Edmunds, M.D. as he followed his medical career. She never lost touch with Hesper and joined the Hesper hundred year club when it was organized on Oct.4, 1910. She returned to Hesper often for their reunions. Her grandchildren Alice, Alouise, and Philip Duffy, remember her well for she visited them often in Nebraska and eventually came to live with them. They called her "too-too" and to this day even her great grandchildren know her by this name. On Nov. 1, 1981 her Granddaughter Alice Duffy Wilson recalled the following: " our grandmother came from Wyoming in 1912 to visit our mother, Dad and me when I was about four years old. We lived on Nebraska Ave. in York Nebraska and I well remember all the cleaning and preparations that took place because Grandma was coming on the Too-Too train to visit. I called her Too-Too and the name stuck. She was Affectionately called Too-Too by our childhood friends. She signed her letters to me when I was in College; Too-Too. She liked the name. She had a great part in Phil, Alouise, and my life as she and grandpa lived with us after grandpa had a stroke in 1913. She taught me to sew and cook and her stories of her life were numerous. She was also our baby sitter as Mother and Dad enjoyed the freedom. I learned to love the hymns from her, as she often played them and we would sing. Later after radio was invented she always turned on Seth Parker's hymn program and we listened and sang. After grandpa Edmunds died in 1918 Too-Too spent her summers in Wyoming with Charlie and family, and in the winter, she returned to us. Her Aunt Candace [Worth] was a frequent visitor to our home. She was just a few years older than Too-Too and they were very close. Her full name was Candace Worth Gove Harper. She was born in Vermont and the family moved to Hesper, Iowa when she was a young girl. When she married Joshua Gove they mover to a claim near Lincoln, Nebraska. Too-Too and Grandpa were soon on their way west as well and they often visited. In the 1890's when my mother Zola Edmunds was attending the Ursuline sisters school in York she would spend her holidays with Aunt Candace and family. She often talked about the Gove cousins and the fun on the farm, especially the Christmas dinners. After Too-Too came to be with us,Aunt Candace was near." Charles: Charles and his wife Alice followed the construction of the Burlington Railroad westward. It was a sod house in Thedford, Neb. that Alice loved dearly. Her son Charlie was born there. Snug in winter and cool in summer was the way she described this home to her granddaughter Alice Duffy Wilson. While in Thedford, Dr. Edmunds was a member of a search party which rescued Retta Haumann in May of 1891. The little girl and her sister Tillie became lost in the sand hills of the aera. A week after Retta was found alive by Dr. Edmunds, the body of her sister was found 30 miles east of Thedford.
Courthouse records in Thedford indicate that Dr. Edmunds owned lots there from 1889-1893.As the Burlington tracks moved ever westward, Dr. Edmunds moved with the train crew. Alice and the two children would remain behind until he could find a suitable home. In those years, Alice made a new home every two or three months. Finally settling in Dayton, Wyoming in the Big horn Mountains not far from Sheridan, Dr. and Mrs. Edmunds ministered to the people of the area for many years. They built a house on the Tongue River and Dr. Edmunds set up his office in two rooms. What the pioneer doctor and his wife meant to the country, cannot be fully realized. In tapes made by Charles and Alice's daughter Zola we learn of the hazards and thrills of the time of the late 1800's. One story Zola tells concerns the bandits who came in the dark of night, blindfolded her father, took him into the mountains to remove a bullet from one of the group and returned him back to his home in Dayton.

Philip Duffy,3 years older than Zola, worked at the convent sweeping classrooms and cleaning after school hours. One day on entering the 4th grade classroom after school,he found Zola alone and sobbing from homesickness. His tender remarks of comfort remained her most precious memory throughout her lifetime. Theirs was a companionship that continued from that day until his death sixty years later. One of Philip and Zola's granddaughters,Shannon Maguire,is an Ursuline Nun.continuing the ties between the Duffy's of York and the Ursuline sisters.
