It would not be necessary to occupy much space in the presentation of the genealogy of the Vineyard Daggetts in view of the extensive family history already in print (Boston, 1894) except for the fact that the volume referred to omits much that should appear, especially in the Joseph2 Daggett line and contains numerous errors that ought to be corrected in the other branches. It is, therefore, deemed best to incorporate it in its entirety rather than to make piecemeal corrections and additions which would be confusing to the reader.

1. JOHN1 DAGGETT, the head of this family, has received sufficient notice to cover the details of his life (Vol. II, Annals of E., pp. 6366) and nothing has since been discovered to determine his ancestry or the maiden name of his wife. The author repeats his suggestion that it was Brotherton as this name was perpetuated in three widely separated branches of Daggett descendants. [Wills of persons of this name which have come to the author's notice are as follows: Thomas Brotherton, mariner, Deptford, Kent 1621 (P. C. C. Dale 92), Eleanor Brotherton, widow, Lewes, Sussex 1636, John Brotherton skinner, London, 8 Mch. 1640 (Commissary, Wills, London XXIX, 382); Alice Brotherton, widow, New Sarum, Wiltshire 8 July 1841 (P. C. C. Evelyn 100). Curiously enough one Robert Daggett was appointed Rector of Gillingham Co., Dorset in 1334 by Thomas de Brotherton.] [See Notes.]

THE JOSEPH2 DAGGETT (6) BRANCH

JOSEPH2 DAGGETT, the head of this branch, was b. in 1647&SHY;8 (not 1634 as stated in the Daggett Genealogy) as appears from a statement of his age in a deposition. [*Superior Judicial Court Msg. No. 3834. He was aged 51 years in Mch. 1698-9. This makes him the youngest known child of his parents.] In it we learn that he had for "many years scrupled the usual way of swearing" and declared his statement "to be the truth spoken in the presence of God". From this we may perhaps infer he had embraced the Quaker beliefs, at least in part. Beyond the facts which appear in the sketch of his life (Vol. II, Annals of W.T., pp. 44&SHY;46), little is known of him. His marriage to Alice Sessetom, dau. of the Sachem of Sanchacantacket, as already detailed, is one of the romances of our history and serves to mark him as one who ignored the conventionalities of society in choosing an Indian princess for his bride. [*This marriage with an Indian gave rise to the name of "The Bow and Arrow Daggetts" which was given to this branch.] It certainly placed him in an anomalous social position and although his father gave him an equal share by will, evidence is not wanting to indicate that there was little affiliation between the descendants of the two island branches for many years. The date of his death or that of his wife are unknown. His estate was adm. Aug. 1718, which is the proximate date, as far as now known. He was a wheelwright by trade.

[Catherine Merwin Mayhew, Genealogist of the Marthas Vineyard Historical Society, adds:

"The Indian wife of Joseph Daggett was NOT Alice Sessetom.

"There is no record of the name of the Indian girl who married Joseph Daggett. Early deeds indicate that she was the daughter of the sachem Autumsquin (somehow translated to Adommas Queen when Dr. Charles Banks misread the original deed; Autumsquin was a male sachem).

"Alice Sessetom was born a generation later than the Indian girl we are interested in. Alice was born about the time that Joseph Daggett married.

"Autumsquin died about 1660. He had these children among others:
1. Wampamag, also known as Samuel, unknown whether he married, he died 1689.
2. Alice, also perhaps perhaps Nahoma, who married Thomas Tyler.
3. _____ (a daughter) who married Joseph Daggett, listed below.
4. Putuspaquin (named as "uncle" to daughters of Joseph Daggett)

"The name of the Indian woman who married Joseph Daggett is unknown. Their DAGGETT children are named in various deeds and wills:

1. Joseph Daggett b c1668
2. Hester/Esther Daggett b c1672 m Edward Cottle
3. Alice/Ellis Daggett b c1675, d 1711, naming children in her will:

(1) "Black Henry Luce" b. before March 1697, son of "White-eyed Henry Luce", named as "Henry Luce" in mother's will
(2) Samuel Look, son of Samuel Look
(3) Patience Allen

"Sources for this material are available at the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society."]

390. JOSEPH,3 b. abt. 1668.
391. HESTER, b. (1672); m. EDWARD COTTLE (9).
392. ALICE [*This name was usually written Ellis in the records and was so spelled by her descendants. She could write her name and frequently signed as a witness.], b. (1675); d. 1711; unm. but mother of the following children:

I. Henry Luce.4 b. 1696 ("Black Henry").
II. Samuel Look.4 b. 1702; rem. to Rochester, Mass.; m. Ruth Savory and had eight children The sons served in the Revolution from that town and descendants in the Civil War.
III. Patience Allen.4 She was living in 1711 but whether she survived to marry is not known.

390. JOSEPH3 DAGGETT, (Joseph,2 John1 ), b. abt. 1668, resided in T. and presumably followed the trade of his father. He m. AMY EDDY abt. 1685. dau. of John and Hepzibah (Daggett) Eddy of T., who was b. abt. 1668 and prob. pre&SHY;deceased her husband. [*The basis for this belief is largely circumstantial and too complicated to warrant explanation. It is founded on deeds, probates, statements of kinship and tradition.] She was living 17 Nov. 1712 (Deeds ii.349), but was not mentioned in John Eddy's will of 1714, either because he had provided for her or she was dead. The will of Joseph Daggett dated 17 Oct. 1704, was not pro. until 12 Aug. 1718, the same year that his father's estate was administered. It would seem that the son's death necessitated the settlement of his father's large real estate interests.
