1. ROBERT CATHCART was, as far as known, the first of his name in New England and on the Vineyard and a biographical sketch of him may be read in Vol. II Annals of W.T. pp. 41-2. He m. PHEBE COLEMAN abt. 1691, dau. of John and Joanna (Folger) Coleman of Nantucket who was b. 15 June 1674. He d. in Boston 22 Mch 1718 and adm. of his estate was granted to his widow 1 Oct. 1719. She m. (2) SAMUEL ATHEARN (10) 16 Sept. 1719 [in Tisbury].

14. GERSHOM CATHCART (Robert1), b. 1698; res. T., carpenter. He m. (1) MARTHA MANTER (30) 12 Feb. 1720 [in Tisbury], who was b. 13 Feb. 1696 and d. 23 Feb. 1733 [and buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]; m. (2) MARY ATHEARN (21) 19 July 1733 [in Tisbury], who was b. 28 Oct. 1711 and d. 3 Sept. 1795 [and buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.] He was prominent in military affairs in town and country, being Ensign 1746, Lieutenant 1749, Captain 1755 and Major 1761. He d. 6 Dec. 1792 in his 95th year.

61. THOMAS CATHCART, (Hugh,3 Gershom,2 Robert1), b. 1781 [the 1850 census states 3 Dec. 1782 in Tisbury]; m. (1) SOPHRONIA WOOD of Falmouth, Mass. who was b. 1787 and d. 6 Oct. 1824; (2) CHARLOTTE C. JORDAN of Canton, Mass. (dau. of George and Elizabeth Jordan) 28 Jan. 1826, who was b. 8 Aug. 1795 [the 1850 census states 18 Aug 1800 in Canton] and d. 3 Aug. 1871 [in Tisbury of "ulceration of bowells."] Their children were the last of the Cathcart name to live on the island. [The 1850 Tisbury census gives Thomas' occupation as "mariner" and in his death record as "farmer." He d. 25 Jul 1868 in West Tisbury of apoplexy. Thomas, Sophronia, and Charlotte are all buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]

100. MARTHA WOOD CATHCART, b. 1820 in Tisbury. She m. JONATHAN ATHEARN JR. (1811-1860) on 28 Oct. 1840 in Tisbury. She died of "insanity" on 8 July 1868 in West Tisbury, and is buried with her husband at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.

By second wife:

101.CHARLOTTE AMELIA CATHCART, b. 24 Nov. 1826 in Tisbury. She m. Capt. JONATHAN MAYHEW of Chilmark (son of William and Phebe Mayhew) on 25 Dec 1853 in West Tisbury. She appears with her parents in the 1850 Tisbury census. She d. 24 Oct. 1857 of fever on board the steamer John L. Stephens, on passage to California. She was interred at sea, but she has a gravestone at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.
102. ANN J. CATHCART, b. 2 Dec. 1832 in Edgartown; m. HENRY C. JOHNSON (of Tisbury, mariner, son of John and Philura Johnson) on 5 Apr 1854 in West Tisbury. She appears with her parents in the 1850 Tisbury census. She is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery. Did Henry die of Typhoid fever on 17 Oct. 1865 in Tisbury?
103. SARAH CATHCART, b. ___. She died at age 12, and is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]
