The incomplete sketch of the pioneer of this family (1) JOHN HILLMAN,
(Vol. II, Annals of C., pp. 30-1),
left much to be desired as a record of the ancestor of so prominent a family,
but nothing can be added of material interest to the short and broken story
of his career. Of his origin nothing further than suggestive reference to
localities in England where Hillman families resided during that century
can be offered for the future searcher. In southwestern England the name
under the spellings Helman, Hylman, Hilman and Hillman are frequently found
in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Gloucestershire. Josiah Helman lived in
Boston and Hingham 1670- 82 and a Thomas Hillman at Pemaquid, Me. 1674,
but no evidence of relationship with our settler has been found.

[Scott Thomson <mchomie@win.bright.net> writes: "I am probably a descendant of, indeed, Shubael and Lydia. I say probably because I have no documentation that they had a daughter, Abigail Taylor Hillman, who married Oliver Samuel May. The Dukes Co. genealogy only lists children of Shubael and Lydia through Mercy Hawks, born 1809. However, an e-mail correspondent sent me a note that said that Abigail was born in 1814 (that year is in conflict with the 1850 census returns, but that isn't unusual) in Conway, Franklin Co., MA, which is where the family went from Martha's. There is a Franklin Co. vital records book that may settle the issue, but I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. There is also and LDS IGI entry for Shubael dying, and Oliver Samuel and Abigail marrying, in Trumbull Co., OH. Two of Shubael and Lydia's other children are living in proximity to Oliver Samuel and/or his parents between 1820 and 1840, so I am making the assumption (and I hope this one doesn't cause me the grief that some have) that Abigail is a younger child of S. and L., and escaped the attention of Banks because she was born elsewhere. (I don't know who else she could belong to, anyway.)"]
