There is sorrow on the sea. CAPT. PETER CROMWELL born Feb. 7, 1814 and died at sea on board Ship Gladiator Sept. 17, 1857. SUSAN CLEVELAND Wife of Capt. Peter Cromwell Born Sept. 1, 1814. Died June 22, 1902. PETER T. CROMWELL Born Mar. 2, 1854. Died Apr. 25, 1939.

Peter Crowell was the son of English immigrant Moses Thomas Cromwell and his Vineyard-born wife, Jedidah Coffin.

The Vineyard Gazette reported, "At Sea, Sept. 16, Capt. Peter Cromwell, master of the ship Gladiator, of New Bedford, which arrived at Honolulu November 4th. In a gale off Cape Horn, Capt. C. fell from the main rigging a few feet above the rail and struck his head, causing his death in forty hours after the accident. The vessel was taken into port by the first officer, Mr. Williams.
