50. JAMES WINSLOW was born about 1732. Banks writes that "every effort has been made by the author, as well as by interested descendants of JAMES5 WINSLOW (50) to locate him in his proper place in the well-known family of that name, living in the Old Colony since 1620 but without definite result. It is prob. that he resided in Rochester or Freetown prior to his coming to T., where he settled and followed the occupation of a pilot." Descendant Judy Swan adds, "although positive proof has not been found, indications are that James Winslow was the son of James and Susanna (Conant) Winslow. James and Susanna were married 7 Dec 1732 and had a son James, 6 Jan 1733/4. They also had a son Zebulon and a daughter
Mary. James and Rhoda (Chase) Winslow named their first daughter Susanna, first son James. James and Elizabeth (Holmes) Winslow named a son Zebulon."

He married (1st) Rhoda Chase (daughter of Isaac Chase and Mary Coffin) on 3 Nov 1757 in Tisbury. He married (2nd) Elizabeth Holmes on 5 Aug 1779 in Tisbury. On 4 Sep 1801 James Winslow of Tisbury, "mariner alias yeoman," and his wife Elizabeth sold a half acre of land in Holmes Hole for $50 to Michael Daggett.

James Winslow died on 26 Aug 1805 and is buried in Crossways Cemetery.

In 1825, twenty years after his death, Susan Oncott, and Betsey Clements of Nova Scotia, were all mentioned (in addition to his surviving children) as grantors in the sale of his property. Were they previously unrecorded daughters? Neices? (Judy Swan notes that a record in Yarmouth states that George Clements married Elizabeth ____. Their first child was born 1807 and was named James. George's line was John, John, and there are no James' in his lineage - an indication that this Elizabeth might be the daughter of James Winslow and probably Elizabeth Holmes.)

Rhoda Chase was born on 5 May 1741. She died on 25 Oct 1778 aged 37.   Children of James Winslow and Rhoda Chase were as follows:

60. Susanna2 Winslow was born on 23 Aug 1758 in Tisbury. No further record. She is not listed in the 1825 sale of her late father’s property.
61. James Winslow was born on 24 Aug 1760 in Tisbury. He died in Dec 1778 at sea (shipwrecked) aged 18.
62. Isaac Winslow was born 16 Jun 1762 in Tisbury. He married (1st) Elizabeth West and (2nd) Deborah Lambert.
63. Peleg Winslow was born about 1765. He married (1st) Susanna Dunham, and (2nd) Rebecca Lambert.
64. Newell Winslow was born about 1767. He died young.
65. Timothy Winslow was born about 1770. He died young.
65½? Rhoda Winslow was born on 15 Jul 1773 in Tisbury. Banks thought she might have been a wife of Isaac Winslow (62), but all of the evidence I have seen suggests that she was more likely a daughter of James (and thus a sister of Isaac.) On 11 Aug 1825 Rhoda Winslow of Tisbury (along with Isaac, Peleg, Abigail Manchester, et al) sold land belonging to the late James Winslow on Holmes Hole Harbor to Timothy Pease Jr. She died on 2 Feb 1850 in Tisbury, aged 76, of consumption. Her death record calls her "single." She is buried in Crossways Cemetery, next to her father(?) James Winslow.
65 3/4? Bathsheba Winslow was born about1776-7 on Martha's Vineyard, and was probably a daughter of James and Rhoda. She married Elisha Nye of  Sandwich on 10 Nov 1803 in Tisbury, and was a resident of Sandwich in 1825. She died 22 Sep 1852 in Sandwich, MA.

Elizabeth Holmes was born on 18 Apr 1756. She was the daughter of Peleg and Abigail (Bradford) Holmes of Nova Scotia. Elizabeth is a direct descendant of William Brewster and William Bradford of the Mayflower. The will of Peleg Holmes in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia stated that one of his heirs is daughter Elizabeth, wife of James Winslow of New England. She died on 2 Jul 1809 in Tisbury, aged 53. Her death record notes that Elizabeth "in a state of insanity drowned herself."  Children of James Winslow and Elizabeth Holmes were as follows:

66. Abigail Bradford2 Winslow was born 17 Apr 1780 in Tisbury. She married Capt. Thomas Manchester Jr.
67. James Winslow was born about 1783. He died in Nov 1795 in Holmes Hole of "canker rash or throat disorder."
68. Newell Winslow was born about 1786. He died in Nov 1795 in Holmes Hole of "canker rash or throat disorder."
69. Polly Winslow was born about 1789. She died in Nov 1795 in Holmes Hole of "canker rash or throat disorder."
70. Zebulon Winslow was born about 1792. He died in Nov 1795 in Holmes Hole of "canker rash or throat disorder."
71. (Child) Winslow was born about 1795. He/she died in Nov 1795 in Holmes Hole of "canker rash or throat disorder."
72. George Winslow was born in 1797 in Tisbury. He married Elizabeth A. Jackson.

62. Isaac2 Winslow (James1) was born on 16 Jun 1762 in Tisbury. He married (1st) Elizabeth West, daughter of Capt. Jeruel West and Deborah Shaw, on 26 Apr 1795 in Tisbury. He was a Tisbury mariner and pilot.

Tisbury Vital Records lists two similar marriages records for Isaac Winslow: the first, on 26 Apr 1786, is for Isaac and Elizabeth West. The second, on 26 Apr 1795, is for Isaac and Betsy West. Banks interpreted this to mean that Isaac married two Elizabeth Wests, the first unidentified and the second the daughter of Capt. Jeruel West. However, to me it seems highly coincidental that he could have married two women with the same first and last name on the same day of the year (April 26th.) In addition, his marriage to Deborah Lambert on 20 Nov 1800 in Chilmark notes "2d m." (not "3d m.") Unfortunately, the known birthdate of Jeruel’s daughter Elizabeth (Feb. 1776) stretches the plausibility that Jeruel’s daughter was the mother of Isaac’s first two children. In any event, the first two children attributed to the marriage(s) to Elizabeth West died without issue, and the third recorded child, James Winslow West, is the only Winslow named an heir to the Jeruel West estate.

He married (2nd) Deborah Lambert on 20 Nov 1800 in Chilmark.

On 18 Mar 1795 Isaac Winslow, Tisbury pilot, bought a dwelling house with 2/3 acres of land on Holmes Hole harbor from Shubael and Mercey West of Kenebeck for 60 pounds. (This is in about the same location as the current Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, although the house was torn down at the turn of this century.) He appeared on the 1800, 1810, and 1820 Tisbury censuses with his family, and was called a resident of East Parish, Tisbury in 1811. (His 1810 census entry is adjacent to his brother Peleg Winslow.) On 11 Aug 1825 Isaac Winslow, Tisbury pilot (along with his brother and sisters) sold part of their late father’s estate at Frog Alley for $120 to Timothy Pease Jr. He listed with a house and lot in the Tisbury tax lists of 1827, 1829, and 1831. The 1831 list also notes that he owned a boat. He appeared on the 1830 Tisbury census as a widower with teenage children Leander and Deborah, and adjacent to his son James Winslow. On 20 Mar 1839 Isaac Winslow, Tisbury pilot, sold to his son Leander his home at Frog Alley, in return for care for the rest of his life. He appeared with Leander on the 1840 Tisbury census, and adjacent to his son George. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census at Frog Alley, aged 87, mariner, with Leander and Jerusha Winslow. Isaac died on 19 May 1852 in Holmes Hole, aged 89, of "old age." He was called a Holmes Hole pilot in his death record.

Elizabeth "Betsey" West was born on 25 Feb 1776 in Tisbury. She died on 2 Mar 1800 in Tisbury, aged 24, and is buried at Crossways Cemetery.  Children of Isaac2 Winslow and Elizabeth West were:

80. James W(est)3 Winslow was born on 16 Mar 1787. He died young.
81. Isaac Winslow was born on 31 Dec 1788. He died in Feb 1817 at sea, aged 28.
82. James West Winslow, born 17 Mar 1796 in Tisbury. He married Jane D. Merry.

Deborah Lambert was born on 15 Aug 1774. She died on 25 Jan 1825 in Tisbury, aged 50. Her death record calls her a "housewife."  Children of Isaac2 Winslow and Deborah Lambert were as follows:

83. Elizabeth W.3 Winslow was born 21 Oct 1802 in Holmes Hole. She married Capt. John Manter.
84. Leander L. Winslow was born on 9 Oct 1804 in Tisbury. He died on 29 Oct 1805 in Tisbury, aged one.
85. Sally H. Winslow was born on 14 Oct (or Nov?) 1806 in Tisbury. She married Oliver C. Grinnell Jr. on 18 Sep 1825 in Tisbury. (Her death record noted "No medical attendance.") She appeared on the 1850 Chilmark census, aged 43, with her husband and children, and in the Naushon census (then still a part of Chilmark) in 1860. She died on 7 Aug 1868 in Gosnold, aged 61. Their children evidently included Ebenezer (1827), Abby S. (1830), Catherine S. (1831), Isaac W. (1835), Oliver C. (1840), and Almira C. Grinnell (1844).
86. Deborah L. Winslow was born on 18 Oct 1810 in Tisbury. She died on 26 Oct 1811 in Tisbury, aged one.
87. Capt. Leander L. Winslow was born 17 Aug 1812 in Tisbury. He married Jerusha Ann Hurlburt.
88. Deborah L. Winslow was born on 17 Aug 1812 in Tisbury. She married William H. Mosher on 6 Jun 1831 in Tisbury. No further record.

63. Peleg2 Winslow (James1) was born about 1765. He married (1st) Susanna Dunham on 23 Jul 1809 in Tisbury; and married (2nd) Rebecca Lambert on 15 Jan 1816 in Tisbury. He died in April 1849 in Tisbury, and his death record called him a "labourer." He was a Tisbury pilot.

On 11 Aug 1825 Peleg and his brothers and sisters sold part of their late father’s estate at Frog Alley for $120 to Timothy Pease Jr. He appeared in 1827 and 1829 Tisbury tax lists (but not in 1831.) He appeared on the 1830 Tisbury census with two males aged 10-15 (son James and ??), a male aged 5-10 (??), a female aged 80-90 (??), and a female aged 30-40 (his wife Deborah.) I couldn't find Peleg in the 1840 Tisbury census. Judging from the 1830 census, Peleg probably had at least two other sons who names I have not learned. Perhaps they move to New Bedford with their widowed mother?

Susanna "Sukey" Dunham was born on 4 Jul 1768, and died on 22 Apr 1813 in Tisbury, aged 44.  There are no known children of Peleg2 Winslow and Susanna Dunham.

Rebecca Lambert was born about 1791 in Tisbury. She died on 13 Feb 1850 in New Bedford, MA, of "Lung Fever." Her death notice in the Vineyard Gazette described her as "formerly of Martha's Vineyard." Children of Peleg Winslow and Rebecca Lambert included:

90. James3 Winslow was born about 1824 in Tisbury. He married Huldah R. Gifford.

66. Abigail Bradford2 "Nabby" Winslow (James1) was born on 17 Apr 1780 in Tisbury. She married Capt. Thomas Manchester Jr. in 1801 in Tisbury. She died on 3 Jan 1870 in Holmes Hole, aged 89, of "hemiplegia paralysis" and "old age" and is buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

On 11 Aug 1825 Abigail Manchester, Tisbury widow, and her brothers and sisters sold part of their late father’s estate at Frog Alley for $120 to Timothy Pease Jr. She appeared on the census of 1850 in Tisbury, aged 70, with her son George and family.

Capt. Thomas Manchester Jr. (46) was born in 1774. Banks describes him as a Tisbury master mariner. He died on 17 Oct 1824 at sea, aged 50, and his gravestone is found at Village Cemetery, Tisbury. Children of Abigail Bradford Winslow and Capt. Thomas Manchester Jr. were as follows:

60. Sophronia Manchester was born 5 June 1801. She married James D. Peakes on 23 Sep 1821.
61? Luretta Manchester was born 11 May 1803. She married John Smith on 11 Mar 1823. [This is in accordance to Banks. However, I believe that she was a sister to Thomas Jr., not a daughter.]
62. Harriot Manchester was born on 15 Jun 1805. She died on 8 May 1806 and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
63. Virginia Manchester was born 1 Sep 1807. She married Richard G. Luce on 9 July 1826.
64. Thomas Manchester was born on 6 Apr 1803. He died on 2 Jul 1806, aged three, and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
65. Newell Winslow Manchester was born 29 Jan 1811. He married Eunice L. Merry on 6 Jan 1834.
66. George B. Manchester was born on 27 Dec 1813 in Tisbury. He married Amanda M. Daggett on 18 Apr 1834 in Tisbury. He died on 23 Aug 1850 on board steam ship Panama, from San Francisco for Panama, aged 36, of "asiaattic cholera." He was buried in Panama. They had children Rebecca (1836), Sophronia P. (1842), and Bradford B. D. Manchester (1846). His death record called him a mariner.
67. Harriet A. Manchester was born in April 1822. She died on 14 Sep 1824, aged two, and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.

72. George2 Winslow (James1) was born about 1797 in Tisbury. He married Elizabeth A. Jackson before 1824. He died on 16 Nov 1875 in Tisbury of "paralysis."

George was called a resident of Nova Scotia on 11 Aug 1825 when he and his brothers and sisters sold part of their late father’s estate. He was not in the 1829 Tisbury tax list, nor could I find him in the 1830 Tisbury census - presumably he was in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick during this period. He appeared on the 1840 Tisbury census adjacent to his brother Leander, however, with his wife, four sons, and two daughters. He also appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, mariner, with his wife and children. This census valued his real estate at $300. He appeared on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 58, laborer, with his wife and children, again on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 63, laborer, and again on the 1870 Holmes Hole census, aged 72. His 1875 death record called him a Tisbury "farmer."

Elizabeth A. Jackson was born on 20 May 1800 in Milltown, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of William and Mary (Dyer) Jackson of St. Stephens, New Brunswick. (Elizabeth had a sister Sarah who married a Nash, which is probably why she named a daughter Sarah Nash Winslow.) She appeared on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Tisbury censuses with her husband and family, and as a widow on the Tisbury census of 22 Jun 1880, aged 80, with their daughter Hattie and her family. She died on 5 Feb 1887, aged 86. Children of George Winslow and Elizabeth A. Jackson were as follows:

100. Elizabeth Ann Winslow was born 20 Sep 1827 at St. Stephens, New Brunswick. She married William H. Cleveland.
101. George Winslow Jr. was born 20 Jan 1830 in Chilmark. He married Madeline C. Legg.
102. Isaac Winslow was born 8 Oct 1831 in Chilmark. He married Marry C. Smith.
103. William M. Winslow was born on 24 May 1834 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850, 1855, 1860 and 1870 Tisbury censuses as a "mariner," living with his parents. He died on 13 Dec 1874 in Tisbury, aged 40, of "Disease of Heart," and his death record described him as a single mariner.
104. Newell J. Winslow was born on 3 May 1836 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850, 1855, and 1860 Tisbury censuses, "mariner," living with his parents. I have no record of him after 1860.
105. Harriet A. "Hattie" Winslow was born on 3 Sep 1839 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1855, 1860, and 1870 Tisbury censuses, no occupation, with her parents, and on the census of 22 Jun 1880 in Tisbury, aged 40, with her mother and George F. Winslow. She was listed as resident of W. Chop Rd. in the 1907 Tisbury directory. She died on 24 Sep 1921 in Tisbury, aged 82.
106. Sarah Nash Winslow was born 4 Jun 1842 in Tisbury. She married William H. Beetle.

Generation Three

82. James West3 Winslow (Isaac2, James1) was born on 17 Mar 1796 in Tisbury. He married Jane D. Merry, daughter of Timothy Merry and Elizabeth Merry, on 28 May 1828 in Tisbury. He died on 12 Dec 1870 in Holmes Hole, at age 74, of "Typhoid Pneumonia."

James appeared as a child on the Tisbury censuses of 1800, 1810, and 1820 in the household of his father Isaac. Although there are several conflicting dates, and although there are other records of sailor "James Winslow" who I can't positively identify, he was undoubtedly the James Winslow of Tisbury who sailed on the following voyages: on the brig Juno of New Bedford which sailed on 6 May 1820, the schooner Laura of New Bedford which left on 26 Apr 1821, the schooner Telmachua of Fairhaven from 15 Jun 1821 to June 1823, the ship Telemachus of Fairhaven from 6 Jul 1822 to 15 Jul 1823, the ship Amazon of Fairhaven from 15 Jul 1823 to 2 May 1824, the ship Stephania of New Bedford from 16 Jun 1828 to 7 Jul 1829, the ship Milwood of New Bedford from 5 Oct 1829 to 1 Jun 1831, the bark Elizabeth of New Bedford from 2 Jul 1831 to 24 Apr 1832, and the ship Oscar of Fairhaven from 23 Nov 1832 to 5 Mar 1836. Most of these records agree that James W. Winslow was about 5' 6 ½" tall, with a light complexion and brown hair.

He appeared in 1827, 1829, and 1831 Tisbury tax lists, and on the 1830 Tisbury census (adjacent to his father.) On 28 Aug 1830, "James West Winslow, mariner, of Tisbury," his grandmother, and twelve other heirs of Jeruel West sold the land at Frog Alley to cousin James West for $400. Although the identity of his father’s first two wives is still in question, this deed seems to conclusively prove that James West Winslow was a grandson of Jeruel West. (Interestingly, however, he is not mentioned as a nephew in his uncle Albert West's 1864 will. Why not?)

James Winslow appears on the census of 1840 as a Tisbury mariner with his wife and two children, adjacent to his cousin James West Jr. He appeared again on the census of 1850 in Tisbury, aged 54, mariner, with his wife and children, in 1855 as a "pilot," in Holmes Hole in 1860 ("pilot"), in 1865 in "East" Tisbury (aged 69, "seaman", with his wife, a maid, and two children,) and finally on the census of 9 Jun 1870 in Tisbury, aged 74, "mariner" with $700 in real estate, living with his wife and daughter. He was called a Holmes Hole "pilot" in his death record on 12 Dec 1870.

Jane D. Merry was born on 7 Feb 1807 in Tisbury. She appears on the 1840, 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865, and 1870 Tisbury censuses with her husband and children. On 20 Dec 1858 Jane (and James) Winslow, along with Amanda and David Smith, Eunice and Newel Manchester, and nine other heirs at law in the estate of Shubael Merry of Tisbury, dec'd, sold land with buildings in West Tisbury (all part of Shubael Merry's estate) for $1 to Rebecca Merry, Tisbury widow. On 21 Jul 1879 Jane sold her house (near the "Proprietor Way" - now Hatch Road) for $1 to her daughter Martha J. West, "reserving possession, use, occupation, and improvement" for the rest of her life. She appears as a 73-year-old widow on the census of 22 Jun 1880 in Tisbury with son Timothy. Jane Winslow died on 22 Feb 1890 in Vineyard Haven, at age 83, of "Senility" and is buried in Tisbury. Children of James West Winslow and Jane D. Merry all born in Tisbury, were as follows:

120.  Timothy M. Winslow was born 4 Feb 1833. He married Mary L. Givens.
121.  Martha Jane Winslow was born 2 Dec 1836. She married (1st) Benjamin P. West; married (2nd) Charles F. Hall.
122.  Mary Smith Winslow was born 27 Dec 1840. She married Charles T. Waite.

83. Elizabeth W.3 "Betsey" Winslow (Isaac2, James1) was born on 21 Oct 1801(?) in Holmes Hole. She married Capt. John Manter, son of Jonathan Manter and Jane Butler, on 8 Oct 1820 in Tisbury. She died a widow on 14 Nov 1887 in Vineyard Haven, aged 85, of old age. [I believe that Banks was in error on pp. 513-4: Elizabeth #73 and Betsey #83 were the same person - she was the daughter of Isaac and Deborah Winslow, according to her death record.) She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 48, with her children.

Capt. John Manter was born on 5 Feb 1798. He died on 11 Nov 1847, aged 49, and is buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.  Children of Elizabeth W. Winslow and Capt. John Manter probably included the following:

i. John Manter was born on 19 Dec 1823 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 26, mariner, with his mother.
ii. Betsey Manter was born about 1826-7. She married Thomas B. Norton (son of Winthrop Norton and Mary (--?--)) on 12 Sep 1844 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 22, with her husband, son, and mother.
iii. Deborah L. Manter was born on 9 Aug 1830 in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 19, with her mother.

87. Capt. Leander L.3 Winslow (Isaac2, James1) was born in August 1812 in Tisbury. He married Jerusha Ann Hurlburt sometime during the 1830’s. He died on 3 Aug 1890 in Tisbury, aged 77 and is buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury. On 2 Jun 1902 his estate (consisting of a dwelling house and lot) was valued at $1100.

On 20 Mar 1839, Isaac Winslow of Tisbury, pilot, sold to his son Leander L. Winslow, mariner, in return for care for the rest of his life, his dwelling house on 2/3 acre of land at Frog Alley on Holmes Hole Harbor (next to the properites of Oliver Grinnell, Constant Lewis, and Tristram Lewis - about the same location as the current Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. These homes were torn down not long after his death.) He appeared on the 1840 Tisbury census of 1840 with his wife, young son, and his father, adjacent to George Winslow. He was called a Tisbury "mariner and pilot" in 1844 and 1849, and a Tisbury "mariner" in 1847. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census at Frog Alley, aged 37, mariner, with his wife and son, and on the 1860 Holmes Hole census at Frog Alley, aged 47, pilot. This census valued his real estate at $600, and his personal estate at $100. He appeared on the 1870 Holmes Hole census at Frog Alley, aged 58, fisherman, with his wife and daughter, and on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 68, pilot, with his wife and daughter.

Jerusha Ann Hurlburt was born on 5 Dec 1820 in East Hartford, CT. She appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 with her husband and children. She died on 22 Feb 1902 in Tisbury, aged 81, of bronchitis, and is buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury. Children of Capt. Leander L. Winslow and Jerusha Ann Hurlburt were as follows:

i. Chester R. Winslow was born on 23 Nov 1839 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1840 Tisbury census in the household of his father. He died on 26 Dec 1841 in Tisbury, aged 2, and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
ii. Chester R. Winslow was born on 8 Apr 1842 in Tisbury. He died on 23 May 1847 in Tisbury, aged 5, of croup, and was buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
iii. Jane Winslow was born about 1843-4. She died on 17 Aug 1847 in Tisbury of croup.
iv. Leander L. Winslow was born on 11 Oct 1844 in Tisbury. He died on 17 Aug 1847 in Tisbury, aged 2, and was buried in Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
v. Nathaniel H. Winslow was born on 3 Jul 1847 in Tisbury. He died on 11 Oct 1848 in Tisbury, aged one, of "chlorea infantum" (dup. "dentition.")
vi. George Winslow was born on 10 Aug 1849 in Tisbury. He died on 8 Oct 1849 in Tisbury and was buried at Village Cemetery, Tisbury.
vii. Louisa Lee Winslow was born in 1856, probably in Tisbury. She appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1860, 1870, and 1880 with her parents at their Frog Alley home. Sometime before 1902 she married Henry Walker Daggett. She died in 1937 and was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.

90. James3 Winslow (Peleg2, James1) was born about 1824 in Tisbury. He married Huldah R. Gifford on 14 Nov 1844 in Chilmark. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census of 1850, aged 26, mariner, in the home of his uncle George. I have no further record of either James or Huldah Winslow. Children of James Winslow and Huldah R. Gifford probably included the following:

i. Henry Augustus Winslow was born on 23 Mar 1845 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census with his father and brother in the home of his great-uncle George Winslow. He appeared on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 15, attending school, with George and Elizabeth Winslow, and again on the census of 9 Jun 1870 in Holmes Hole, aged 25, "mariner," in the home of George and Elizabeth Winslow. No further record.
ii. Samuel H. Winslow was born in Oct 1845 in Tisbury. He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged four, with his father in the home of his great-uncle George. He died on 27 Sep 1850 in Tisbury, aged four, of "disentary."

100. Elizabeth Ann3 Winslow (George2, James1) was born 20 Sep 1827 in St. Stephens, New Brunswick. She married Capt. William H. Cleveland (son of Benjamin Cleveland and Hannah Smith) on 9 May 1847 in Tisbury. She died in 1903 of "valvular disease of the heart" and is buried at West Chop Cemetery, Tisbury.

Capt. William H. Cleveland was born 31 Jul 1819 in Tisbury. He was called a Holmes Hole "boat builder" in 1859. He died 5 Nov 1893 of "chronic hepatitis," and is buried at West Chop Cemetery. Children of Elizabeth Ann Winslow and William H. Cleveland were as follows:

130. Henry Newell Cleveland was born 20 May 1848 in Holmes Hole. He married Ann Eliza Fish.
131. George Kneeland Cleveland, born 28 Apr 1850, died 20 Mar 1926.
132. Clarence Luster. Cleveland was born 19 Mar 1852. He died on 18 Oct 1920 in Tisbury.

134. Mary Elizabeth Cleveland was born on 20 Jan 1859 at Holmes Hole "Neck." She died on 4 May 1868 at Holmes Hole "Neck", aged 9, of scarletina, and is buried at West Chop Cemetery.

** See The Descendants of Moses Cleveland on Martha's Vineyard by Judy Haddock Swan for more information about this family.

101. George3 Winslow Jr. (George2, James1) was born on 20 Jan 1830 in Chilmark. He married Madeline C. Legg on 9 Apr 1864 in Tisbury. He died in 1889 and is buried at West Chop Cemetery.

He appeared on the 1850, 1855, and 1860 Tisbury censuses, as a "mariner" living with his parents, and was called a Tisbury mariner on his 1864 marriage record. He appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 50, carpenter, with his wife and daughter.

Madeline C. Legg was born on 2 Aug 1836. She appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, "keeping house," with her husband and daughter). She died on 11 Jul 1901 in Tisbury, aged 64, of "rheumatism," and is buried at West Chop Cemetery.  Children of George F. Winslow Jr. and Madeline C. Legg included the following:

i. Isabella A. Winslow was born about 1867-8. She appeared on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 12, attending school, with her parents.
ii. Mary Lizzie Winslow was born in February 1872. She died on 7 Apr 1876 in Tisbury, aged four.

102. Isaac3 Winslow (George2, James1) was born on 8 Oct 1831 in Chilmark. He married Mary C. Smith, daughter of Benjamin Franklin Smith and Temperance Smith, on 29 Nov 1855 in Tisbury. He died at sea on 22 Dec 1859, aged 28.

He appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, "laborer," with his parents, and again on the 1855 Tisbury census, aged 23, with his parents. He was called a Tisbury "laborer" on his 1855 marriage record, and a Tisbury "mariner" on the 1857 birth record of his daughter and his 1859 death record.

Mary C. Smith was born 17 Dec 1836 in Tisbury. She died 5 Sep 1858 in Tisbury of "puerperal fever," probably shortly after the birth of her son George. Children of Isaac Winslow and Marry C. Smith were as follows:

i. Stillborn Winslow was born and died on 5 Jun 1857 in Tisbury.
ii. George Franklin Winslow was born in 1858. He was orphaned as an infant, and was raised by his grandparents. He appeared on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 1, with George and Elizabeth Winslow, on the 1870 Holmes Hole census, aged 12, "attending school," in home of George and Elizabeth, and on the 1880 Tisbury census, aged 22, "sailor," with his grandmother and aunt. He died in 1931 in Tisbury.

106. Sarah Nash3 Winslow (George2, James1) was born on 4 Jun 1842 in Holmes Hole. She married William H. Beetle on 15 Jun 1863 in Tisbury. She died at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. Thomas Dawson on 3 Mar 1935, aged 92.

She appeared on the 1850 Tisbury census, aged 7, with her parents, and again on the 1860 Holmes Hole census, aged 18, with her parents. She appeared on the 1870 and 1880 Holmes Hole censuses, "keeping house," with her husband and children in the home of her parents. Her obituary notes that Sarah "was born in Vineyard Haven and spent her entire life in that town with the exception of a trip to the West Indies, made with her husband, William H. Beetle, when they were first married. Her experiences in a terrific hurricane at that time did not encourage further voyaging and she was never long absent from her home afterwards."

William H. Beetle was born about 1829 in Edgartown. He appeared on the 1870 Holmes Hole census, aged 40, "mariner," with his wife, and again in 1880, aged 51, "sailor." Children of Sarah Nash Winslow and William H. Beetle were as follows:

140. Hattie W. Beetle was born about 1863-4, probably in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1870 and 1880 Holmes Hole censuses, at home with her parents. She died before 1935.
141. Ada L. Beetle was born about 1868-9, probably in Tisbury. She appeared on the 1870 Holmes Hole census, aged one, with her parents, and again in 1880, "attending school." She married _____ Smith before 1935. She was a resident of St. Petersburg, FL in March, 1935.
142. Elizabeth Osborn Beetle was born 30 Nov 1875 in Vineyard Haven. She married Louis Whitney Legg.

Generation Four

120. Timothy M.4 Winslow (James3, Isaac2, James1) was born on 4 Feb 1833 in Tisbury. He married Mary L. Givens, daughter of James Givens and Mary A. Lewis, on 27 Jan 1869 in Tisbury. He died on 29 Oct 1901 in Vineyard Haven, aged 68 of "Heart Failure." (The Gazette reported that he "was found dead in his bed.") He is buried in Village Cemetery, Vineyard Haven.

Timothy Winslow was called a Tisbury "mariner" in the census entries of his parents in 1850, 1855, and 1860, and a "seaman" in 1865. He was called a Tisbury "mariner" at the time of his marriage in 1869. He appeared on the 1870 Tisbury census, aged 37, "mariner," with his wife in the home of her parents, and was again called a Holmes Hole "mariner" in 1872.

In 1880 he appears in the census as a 42-year-old, single "sailor" living with his mother, and it is unclear what became of his wife and children. He resided in 1897 on North Main St., Tisbury, at which time he was called a "laborer." He appears on the census of 4 Jun 1900 in Tisbury, aged 67, "day laborer," "widower." His 1901 death record calls him both a "widower" and a "fisherman."

Mary L. Givens (or Givings) may also have been known as "Lavinia." She was born on 13 Aug 1853 in Holmes Hole, and appears as a two-year-old in the 1855 Tisbury census of her parents. She next appeared in the 1870 Holmes Hole census, "keeping house," with her husband and parents. By 1880, Timothy was living with her parents, and their son Fred was living with her parents in Cottage City, but Mary and daughter Alice are missing. I have no record of Mary after 1872, although her husband’s death record suggests that she may have died before 1901.  Children of Timothy M. Winslow and Mary L. Givens were as follows:

160. Alice M. Winslow was born 10 Mar 1871 in Taunton, MA. She married William Henry Lewis.

161. Frederick G. Winslow was born on 31 Mar 1872 in Cottage City. He married Mary A. (--?--) about 1892-3. He appeared on the census of 4 Jun 1880 in Cottage City, age 8, with his grandparents James and Mary Givens. He resided in 1907 at 63 Clinton Ave., Oak Bluffs, and appeared on the census of 1910 in Cottage City as a "Lineman (Electric Wiring)" (20 weeks unemployed), aged 37, living with his wife. I have no record of Fred after 1910.

121. Martha Jane4 Winslow (James3, Isaac2, James1) was born on 2 Dec 1836 in Tisbury. She married (1st) her first cousin Benjamin P. West, son of William West and Mary Poole, on 21 Sep 1854 in Tisbury. She married (2nd) Charles F. Hall, son of Jeremiah Hall and Thankful Homes(?), on 18 Mar 1893 in Tisbury. She died on 28 Jul 1925 in Oak Bluffs, at age 88, of a "Fracture of Hip and Wrist." (Her obituary mentions "her accident a couple of weeks before her death.") She is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Martha grew up in Holmes Hole, and she appears on the Tisbury censuses of 1840 and 1850 with her parents. She appears in the 1855, 1860, 1865, and 1870 Tisbury census, "housewife," with her husband and son. Her first husband, Benjamin West, died in 1877. In 1879 her mother, Mrs. Jane Winslow, sold her Frog Alley home (on what is now called "Hatch Road") to Martha for $1 provided she be allowed to live there for the rest of her life. I was unable to find Martha in the 1880 Vineyard census. The Gazette reported, "after [Benjamin] West's death, Mrs. West continued to live on the Vineyard until her marriage to Charles F. Hall, when she moved to Dennis. Mrs. Hall survived her husband by just a few months, and until her accident a couple of weeks before her death, had lived a most active and useful life. She had been a member of the Methodist church for 76 years, and during all those years her life was more than that of just a nominal Christian; it was one of service to others, and there have been many who counted her a choice friend and helpful neighbor because of her understanding and sympathy".

Martha was reportedly a resident of Tisbury at the time of her second marriage in 1893, but she does not appear on any 1900 Vineyard censuses. She resided on 31 Oct 1901 on "the Cape," and by 16 Jan 1905 in Dennis. She does appear on the Tisbury census of 1920, aged 84, with her husband Charles and her son James’ family. In 1920, her daughter-in-law Bertha (Hall) West (who was also her stepdaughter) gave Martha permission to live for the remainder of her life in the Hall family’s Dennis home after the death of Charles Hall.

** See Part Six: Descendants of William West for more information about Benjamin P. West (1817-1877) and their descendants.

Charles F. Hall was born in Jun 1845 in Dennis, MA. (He was called "of South Dennis" in his daughter's 1937 obituary.) He married (1st) Emma Sears before 1889. His occupation was described as "Cranberry Culture" at the time of his marriage in 1893, and his residence as Dennis. He appears on the Tisbury census of 1920, aged 75, with his wife and stepson. He died on 27 Oct 1924 in Dennis, at age 79 and is buried in Dennis Village Cemetery. There were no children of Martha Jane4 Winslow and Charles F. Hall.

122. Mary Smith4 Winslow (James3, Isaac2, James1) was born on 27 Dec 1840 in Tisbury. She married Charles T. Waite, son of John Eames Waite and Maria R. Luce, on 29 Nov 1862 in Holmes Hole. She died after 1870.

She appeared on the 1850, 1855, and 1860 Tisbury censuses with her parents, and was called a resident of Tisbury her 1862 marriage record and the 1863 birth record of her son. Curiously, she and her husband appear twice in the 1865 census: once in Tisbury, and once in Edgartown. In 1870, she appears on the census in Tisbury, aged 28, "Keeping House", with her husband, son "Alfred," and her parents. I have no further record of her or her family.

Charles T. Waite or Waight was born on 3 Feb 1842 in Edgartown. He appeared on the census of 25 Sep 1850 in Edgartown, Dukes, MA (Age 8, with parents). He appeared on the 1855 Edgartown census, aged 12, with his parents, and on the 1860 Edgartown census, aged 18, "mariner," with her mother Maria. His 1862 marriage record calls him a Eastville "mariner." After their marriage they remained in Tisbury where he was listed as a "mariner" in 1863, a "seaman" in 1865, and a "mariner" in 1870. I have no further record of them after 1870.    Children of Mary Smith Winslow and Charles T. Waite were:

i. Allen Merrill Waite was also known as Alfred E. or Allie E. Waite. He was born on 5 Sep 1863 in Tisbury. He appears with his parents in the Tisbury censuses of 1865 and 1870, but I have no record of him after 1870.

130. Henry N.4 Cleveland (Elizabeth3 Winslow, George2, James1) was born on 20 May 1848 in Holmes Hole. He was listed as a "hostler W. H. Renear stable" at the corner of Main and Beach streets in the 1907 Tisbury directory. He appeared on the census of 25 Apr 1910 on Main St., Tisbury. He married Ann Eliza Fish (daughter of John R(andolph) Fish and Sarah S. Hammond) on 24 Jan 1870 in New Bedford. He died on 11 Oct 1929 in Tisbury, aged 81, of "Arterio Sclerosis / Endocarditis."

Ann Eliza Fish (A.K.A. Ann Eliza Gibbs) was born on 21 Feb 1853 in Dartmouth, MA. She appeared on the 1910 Tisbury census with her husband. She died on 23 Mar 1923 "at the home of her devoted daughter" in Tisbury, aged 70, of "Generl Paresis." and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Tisbury.  Children of Henry N. Cleveland and Ann Eliza Fish were:

i. George W. G. Cleveland was born 30 Mar 1871. He died 21 Aug 1925.
ii. Robert Foster Cleveland was born in 1875 and died in 1944.
iii. Rosanna Baker "Rose" Cleveland was born on 21 Feb 1882 in Tisbury. She married Charles M. Vincent on 23 Feb 1905 in Tisbury. She died on 6 Oct 1946 in Oak Bluffs.
iv. Waldo Clifton Cleveland, born Apr 1888, died 1943.

** See The Descendants of Moses Cleveland on Martha's Vineyard by Judy Haddock Swan for more information about this family.

142. Elizabeth Osborn4 Beetle (Sarah3 Winslow, George2, James1) was born on 30 Nov 1875 in Vineyard Haven. She married Louis Whitney Legg, son of Lewis A. Legg and Harriet Ann Hatch, on 10 Feb 1897 at the Mansion House in New Bedford. She died on 17 Jun 1943 at the Palmer Memorial Hospital in Boston, aged 67 of "Carcinoma of Pharynx / Carcinoma of Cervex / Nodes Cochexia." (The Gazette noted that she "had been in poor health for some time.") She was buried on 21 Jun 1943 in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Her obituary states that "She was born in Vineyard Haven, the daughter of William H. and Sarah Winslow Beetle, and spent practically her entire life in that town. …Mrs. Legge was devoted to her home and led a quiet and industrious life. She was associated with Christ Methodist church". She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1880, aged four, with her parents, and her 1897 marriage record listed her as "at home" in Tisbury. (The Gazette reported that the newly married couple planned to "occupy the Cleveland house at the Neck, now owned by Capt. Randall.") She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900, aged 24, with her husband and son. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1910 on the "Water Front," aged 34, with her husband and sons. She appeared on the Tisbury census of 1920 on Hatch Road, aged 44, with her husband, children, and mother. She was called a resident of Vineyard Haven in 1935.

Her death record calls her a married Tisbury "housewife." At her death she owned three fifty-foot-wide lots on the north side of Daggett Ave. in addition to her homestead.

Generation Five

160. Alice M.5 Winslow (Timothy4, James3, Isaac2, James1) was born on 10 Mar 1871 in Taunton, MA. She married William Henry Lewis, son of John Lewis Jr. and Louisa N. Luce, on 22 May 1900 in Tisbury. She died on 18 May 1917 in Tisbury, at age 46, of "Labor Pneumonia" and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

It is unclear whether she spent her childhood in Tisbury, but she had an illegitimate son in Vineyard Haven in 1899, and was a resident of this town at the time of her 1900 marriage. She appeared with her husband on the Tisbury census of 1900 on Main St., and on the census of 1910 at Frog Alley. The 1910 census states that she was "working out" as an employed housekeeper, and was unable to read or write.

Alice M. Winslow had one illegitimate child. The father’s name was not recorded:

George K. Winslow was born on 14 Apr 1899 in Vineyard Haven and died there on 25 Sep 1899 of "Heart Failure."

William Henry Lewis was born in May 1862 in Tisbury. His obituary notes that William was a "well known resident of Vineyard Haven [and] was known to virtually all inhabitants of the down-Island section. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis of Vineyard Haven, he was born in that town, and lived there during his entire lifetime. A laborer for the most part, he was a quiet, retiring character, keeping much to himself, yet possessing a warm affection for children and animals, which was widely recognized and appreciated by those who knew him."

William appeared on the Tisbury censuses of 1865, 1870, and 1880 with his parents. He was called a Tisbury "laborer" at the time of his 1900 marriage. He appeared on the Tisbury census of 1900 on Main St. as a "day laborer (2 mos. unemployed)," aged 38, living with his wife in the home of his brother, Edward J. Lewis. He resided in 1907 on Main St. at "the Neck" and was again called a "laborer." In 1910, he was living at Frog Alley working "odd jobs" when he could find work at all. The 1910 census also notes that he was unable to read or write. In 1915 he was listed on West Chop Rd. as a "Laborer."

Stan Lair remembers, "Ed and William Lewis ... lived just beyond Daggett Avenue on the left, before you come to the next street, a vacant lot up in there, just in back. There used to be a house there that burned down in the 40's some time. And Ed Lewis and William Lewis lived there. They were both laborers. And both were real hard-working and rugged men." The Gazette mentions that shortly before his death he had moved in with his sister, Almira "Nellie" Cleveland.

He died on 9 Feb 1944 in Tisbury, at age 81, of "cardiovascular-renal syndrome." The Gazette relates that he "collapsed on the street on Wednesday morning, as he was taking his customary walk, and died almost immediately, from a heart attack." His death record called him a "laborer." He was buried on 11 Feb 1944 in Oak Grove Cemetery.

There were no children of Alice M. Winslow and William Henry Lewis.
