EDWARD HAMMETT, b. abt. 1680, is first recorded as a resident of Taunton, by occupation a worsted comber. A sketch of him may be read in Vol. II, Annals of W.T., p. 53, and nothing has been since learned as to his ancestry. The name is rarely found in England except in the counties of Cornwall and Devon. An Edward Hammett lived in the parish of East Downe, Devonshire, 1646, and doubtless the origin of our Hammetts may be traced to one of these localities. He m. EXPERIENCE BOWLES, dau. of Samuel and Mary (Dyer) Bowles of Sheepscot, Me., and Rochester, Mass. 17 Jan. 1703-4 at Taunton. Her parents were driven from Maine during the Indian War of 1689 and fled to Braintree, Mass. where relatives resided. She was baptized there with her brothers and sisters on 4 Sept. 1692. He d. 20 Mch. 1745 and his will Mch. 1745 was pro. 7 May 1745. [He is buried at West Tisbury Village Cemetery.]
