Nathaniel Cottle? [Helen Cottle Carter <cpygmy1@mon-cre.net>
writes "I am searching for Nathaniel COTTLE who was born on Martha's
Vineyard. He was a Loyalist in the Rev. War, married Catharine Fletcher
in 1781 and is found in New Brunswick by 1783 where he lived, raised a family
and died in 1806. I cannot find the record of his marriage nor of his birth.
I am seeking to find his parents. Nathaniel Cottle states that he was born
in Martha's Vineyard, MA. I am not sure at all when Nathaniel was born.
I have been guessing that he was born around 1740 - 1750 thinking that since
he died in 1806 he would have been around 60 years old, fathering 11 children
in 25 years of marriage. Catharine was young enough to marry again and bury
another husband in 1818. I have found no record of her death. I have just
resently discovered that Nathaniel was buried in Gagetown but there are
about 20 cemeteries there.
In the History of Queens Co., NB it states: `Nathaniel Cottle (Loyalist)
was born in Martha's Vineyard. After coming from Martha's Vineyard, Nathaniel
settled in Canning, NB and later Waterborough, NB. He was married to Catharine
Fletcher on Dec 6, 1781 and they had eleven children, three of them sons,
and eight daughters.'
In The Loyalist of NB by Dr. Esther Clark Wright says Nathaniel Cottle
was a Loyalist that came from Massachusetts although she has questioned
this.
I think Nathaniel had a son named Isaac. I am not 100 % sure but Isaac and
Nathanial B. Cottle were witnesses to Sarah Cottle's wedding and I know
Nathanial B. and Sarah are children of Nathanial."
She added: "I have found a grandchild of
Nathaniel named Nathaniel Francis Cottle, born in NB 1824. He is the son
of Isaac. So Nathaniel and Catharine did have a son named Isaac. The third
son was a bachelor and was known in family literature as 'dear Granville
Cottle'. I have also learned that Catharine Fletcher is from the line of
Robert Fletcher of Mass. the emigrant from England. Her parents removed
to NS where she and Nathaniel were probably married. She was born on September
13, 1753 in Concord. I have been unable to find any reference to Nathaniel
before his marriage to Catharine or any further references to his being
a Loyalist. However, the family were all Baptist. Nathaniel might have fled
when the taxation of the churches appeared on Martha's Vineyard."]
